{"id":5628,"date":"2016-01-03T15:16:52","date_gmt":"2016-01-03T20:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=5628"},"modified":"2016-01-07T15:20:45","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T20:20:45","slug":"january-3-2016-the-force-with-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/january-3-2016-the-force-with-you\/","title":{"rendered":"January 3, 2016, The Force With You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dave Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Is there anyone in your life whom you would consider a hero?\u00a0 What is it that makes them heroic?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Force With You<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I sit writing this lesson, I know that tonight the new Star Wars movie will be released at midnight.\u00a0 Perhaps many of you will have seen this movie already by the time this lesson reaches you.\u00a0 I hope it was magnificent!\u00a0 I hope that it captured all of the heroic glory of the originals, drawing us ever into an epic tale of adventure among the stars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/01\/IMG_5997edit.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5629\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5629\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/01\/IMG_5997edit.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5997edit\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/01\/IMG_5997edit.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/01\/IMG_5997edit-250x178.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Commentators on the original Star Wars movies commonly note that the story is actually a very old one.\u00a0 In many, many ancient tales, a young hero from humble origins is whisked away on a journey to reach a destiny he could never have dreamed of before.\u00a0 He is mentored by an old, but powerful figure, who teaches him how to maximize his potential in order to defeat a potent enemy.\u00a0 Many of our films capitalize on this archetype \u2013 after all, doesn\u2019t this same storyline fit adventurous heroes like Harry Potter and Katniss Everdeen?<\/p>\n<p>If it isn\u2019t the basic storyline that has made Star Wars unique and beloved for four decades, then what is it?\u00a0 Perhaps it is some of the mystique that comes with the Star Wars universe.\u00a0 For me, the coolest part of the Star Wars story has to be the Force.<\/p>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t a committed geek like me, you may not know that the Force, in the Star Wars films, is a powerful, pervasive entity that is present in all life.\u00a0 For those who know how to tap into it, it enables them to not only achieve great power, but also to be much more aware of their surroundings \u2013 and even able to feel and communicate instantly across wide distances of space.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t just magic, though.\u00a0 The Force can be used for good or evil.\u00a0 It is a mystical energy that even the Jedi, its strongest users, struggle to fully understand.\u00a0 The Jedi are heroes not only because of their power through the Force, but even more so because of their wisdom and their commitment to use the immense power of the Force with restraint and a commitment to peace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did the heroes you spoke about in the Warm Up Question have in common?\u00a0 Do the heroes of our favorite films share the same traits?<\/li>\n<li>To what degree are we capable of the same greatness that our favorite heroes show?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Second Sunday of Christmas<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=317719337\">Jeremiah 31:7-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=317719375\">Ephesians 1:3-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=317719460\">John 1:[1-9]10-18<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This passage is a tremendous one to follow our study of the miraculous and inspiring setting of Jesus&#8217; birth.\u00a0 You see, the story of Jesus&#8217; birth reminds us of the humble way that God chose to be born among humanity.\u00a0 Jesus is born to the family of a carpenter.\u00a0 At the time of His birth, there is no room at the inn, and so He is born among the animals in the stable.\u00a0 The first dignitaries invited to the court of this newborn King are but humble shepherds, watching over their flocks by night.\u00a0 (The magi would have arrived later.)<\/p>\n<p>These themes are crucially important to our understanding of the Christmas story.\u00a0 Our Christmas plays and pageants always focus on them, and many pastors are careful to ensure that their congregations hear the magnificent story of Jesus&#8217; arrival through the lens of His humble birth.\u00a0 It is an amazingly powerful story, and it reminds us of the tremendous love that our Savior has for us!<\/p>\n<p>There is a problem, though: Sometimes, we are so busy telling each other about the humility of Jesus&#8217; birth that we forget about the majesty of who Jesus really is.\u00a0 This passage from John&#8217;s Gospel reminds us just who it is that came to live among us mere humans.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;He was in the world, and the world came into being through him&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though God the Son came to live among us, it was not the beginning of his existence.\u00a0 The Son is part of the omnipotent Trinity that created our world, crafted our existence, and guided the people of Israel throughout the thousands of years preceding the Gospels.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;From his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is God that enables grace, power, and beauty to be present in our lives.\u00a0 It is God who is created us.\u00a0 It is God whose infinite nature means that He holds the entire universe in His hands.\u00a0 And it is God who deigned to be born in a manger.<\/p>\n<p>As we celebrate the humility of Jesus&#8217; birth, let us take a moment and try to imagine the awesome love that God must have to have put aside His majesty to dwell among us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Hebrew people were known for calling God many names &#8212; Elohim, Adonai, El Shaddai, and so on &#8212; to represent the many things God is to us.\u00a0 We use many names for God as well.\u00a0 God is the Prince of Peace, Everlasting Father, Wonderful Counselor (Isaiah 9:6).\u00a0 What name might you add to this list of epithets for God?<\/li>\n<li>This text highlights the Trinitarian nature of God &#8212; God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all together.\u00a0 How do you understand the Trinity?\u00a0 How does one God have three personas? (*Note: While this question is germane to the text, it is a difficult one for teenagers.\u00a0 Additional documents, such as &#8220;A Lutheran \u2013 Orthodox Common Statement on Faith in the Holy Trinity&#8221;, may help you prepare for this question.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prepare for the coming of Jesus in the Gospels as if it were the release of a film.\u00a0 One group of youth can design a movie-style poster.\u00a0 Another group can write and record a trailer.\u00a0 How will you capture the essence of this story for the release?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Holy God, in your infinite love, you came down from heaven and lived a life of peace and service to your humble creation.\u00a0 Thank you for always continuing to be present and powerful in our lives.\u00a0 Grant that we would always be inspired by your words and works among us.\u00a0 In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dave Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL &nbsp; Warm-up Question Is there anyone in your life whom you would consider a hero?\u00a0 What is it that makes them heroic?
