You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those on both sides of the issue can find in this week&#8217;s gospel lesson support for their position.\u00a0 Opponents of same-sex marriage point to Jesus&#8217; citation of Genesis, which clearly, explicitly identifies the conjugal union of male and female as God&#8217;s design.\u00a0 Proponents see Jesus consistently acting as a champion of those denied rights, power, and dignity in a patriarchal context where men had rights that women did not have (including the right to initiate divorce) and as a defender of committed, loving union.\u00a0 Jesus does not specifically address the possibility of same-sex marriage; his silence on a question he was not asked is interpreted very differently by his present-day followers.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all of us who read the Bible are at least somewhat guilty of looking for it to support what we already believe rather than allowing it to challenge our opinions and to reshape the way we think.\u00a0 The latter is what Jesus is trying to accomplish with both the Pharisees and his disciples.\u00a0 The Pharisees ask, &#8220;Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?<em>&#8221; <\/em>Jesus moves the conversation from the legality of divorce to God&#8217;s intention for marriage\u2014from a legal loophole to a sacred covenant.\u00a0 He next chastises his disciples for trying to separate him from children, &#8220;for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.&#8221;<em>\u00a0 <\/em>He elevates the value of children for his disciples in the same way he elevates the value of women for the male Pharisees (and later the disciples).\u00a0 In both cases, he shifts the focus from separating people toward bringing them together.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath all this is Mark&#8217;s broader story.\u00a0 The Pharisees are testing Jesus because they are done with him.\u00a0 Since marital breakdown was the undoing of John the Baptist (Mk 6:17-18), maybe the issue will work with Jesus too.\u00a0 They are really looking for a way to <em>write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce<\/em> him!\u00a0 Their strategy backfires.\u00a0 Their divorce from Jesus\u2014the cross\u2014is transformed into the altar where the union of God and humanity is saved and secured forever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What does this mean for people who disagree about the issue of same-sex marriage?\u00a0 Which do you think is more important to God:\u00a0 being right or maintaining relationship?\u00a0 Does that depend on the issue in question?<\/li>\n<li>Can you see faithfulness in the interpretation of those with whom you disagree?\u00a0 What have they taught you?<\/li>\n<li>What separates us from God and one another?\u00a0 What can be done about it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In your group, stage a respectful debate.\u00a0 (Invite members of the congregation council to attend, listen without speaking, and take notes.)\u00a0 First, without anyone saying anything about the issue, divide the room into two sides:\u00a0 yes and no.\u00a0 Each person selects a side based on their answer to the question:\u00a0 <em>Should Christian churches perform marriages for same-sex couples?<\/em>\u00a0 Before anyone speaks, reverse the room.\u00a0 Those who believe no:\u00a0 argue for yes.\u00a0 Those who believe yes:\u00a0 argue for no.\u00a0 After the debate, discuss:\u00a0 what did you appreciate about and learn from the perspective of the other side?<\/li>\n<li>Choose one item from the list of responses in your group to the question about what separates us from God and one another.\u00a0 Plan one activity your group will lead to address this item in a positive way in your setting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God our creator, our experience and understanding of you is limited and varies widely.\u00a0 Draw and hold us together.\u00a0 Teach us how to appreciate one another\u2019s perspectives without compromising our convictions.\u00a0 Move us from separation to healthy relationship with you and one another in the name and Spirit of the one who loves, challenges, restores, blesses, and unites us all, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Hiortdahl \u200b WARNING!
