{"id":5552,"date":"2015-05-19T21:00:07","date_gmt":"2015-05-20T02:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=5552"},"modified":"2015-09-29T21:04:48","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T02:04:48","slug":"may-24-2015-under-the-rubble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/may-24-2015-under-the-rubble\/","title":{"rendered":"May 24, 2015 Under the Rubble"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>David Dodson&#8211;Fort Walton Beach, FL<\/p>\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever experienced a natural disaster or severe storm?\u00a0 Were you frightened?<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Under the Rubble<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>On April 25<sup>th<\/sup>, 2015, a major earthquake rocked the mountainous nation of Nepal.\u00a0 With a magnitude of 7.8, this earthquake was the most violent natural disaster to hit Nepal in 81 years.\u00a0 At least 8,259 people died in the quake, and nearly 20,000 people were injured when the buildings around them came crashing down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5553 size-full\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/09\/shutterstock_273291338edit.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_273291338edit\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/09\/shutterstock_273291338edit.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/09\/shutterstock_273291338edit-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Australian Camille Thomas was in the village of Langtang when the earthquake began.\u00a0 When the Australian Associated Press interviewed Camille, she labored to explain how terrifying the experience was.\u00a0 \u201cIt was pretty scary, pretty horrible, nothing you can really explain,\u201d she said. \u201cWe ran and hid under some stuff and it all started coming down.\u00a0 Snow and rocks and houses, everything.\u00a0 An avalanche.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Camille made it to safety, many others did not.\u00a0 In the days following the earthquake, Nepalese men and women, with the help of the Nepalese army, began digging through the rubble, hoping desperately to find survivors buried beneath.<\/p>\n<p>Miraculously, a few survivors appeared.\u00a0 Sonies Aawal, a five-month-old baby, was among the first reported miracle survivors, pulled out of the wreckage 22 hours after the quake to the relief of his parents.\u00a0 A 15-year-old boy named Pemba was buried in rubble for a full five days before being pulled out.\u00a0 Astonishingly, Pemba was not the last survivor found.\u00a0 A 101-year-old man by the name of Funchu Tamang was dug out a week after the earthquake.\u00a0 Tamang had only suffered minor injuries in the quake.<\/p>\n<p>The survivors are incredibly lucky, but they certainly experienced days of uncertainty and fear, buried in the darkness, unsure if help was coming.\u00a0 Pemba spent so long in the darkness prior to his rescue that he admitted, \u201cI did not know if I was alive or dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever felt helpless in the face of a situation you couldn&#8217;t control?<\/li>\n<li>What could someone have said to you or done for you in the midst of that situation in order to help you find strength?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><strong>Pentecost Sunday<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=298525112\">Acts 2:1-21<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=298525163\">Romans 8:22-27<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=298525214\">John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We rejoin Jesus and his disciples as Jesus offers his final teachings following the Last Supper.\u00a0 After he finishes speaking, Jesus and the disciples will go to the Garden of Gethsemane.\u00a0 The disciples may not know it yet, but they are about to experience a situation in which they will feel helpless and alone.<\/p>\n<p>The disciples had learned to rely on Jesus.\u00a0 Sometimes that was a hard and frightening lesson to learn, as when Jesus calmed the storm that had the disciples terrified and fearing for their lives.\u00a0 Sometimes it was simply miraculous and humbling, as when Jesus caused four loaves and two fish to feed a multitude.\u00a0 By this time, though, the disciples were getting it.\u00a0 Jesus was not only their rabbi (their teacher) but also their Rock and their Shelter.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus knew, of course, that the disciples would struggle with his death and his ascension into heaven.\u00a0 After learning to rely on Jesus in a very real way, would the disciples feel abandoned and alone when they didn\u2019t have Jesus physically by their side?\u00a0 Certainly, we can relate to this.\u00a0 Haven\u2019t we all felt alone sometimes?\u00a0 Have you ever wanted Jesus to be physically beside you?<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Jesus has some comforting news for us.\u00a0 As scary as the idea of Jesus\u2019 departure is to the disciples, He tells them, \u201cIt is to your advantage that I go away\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By His death, resurrection, and ascension into Heaven, Jesus is preparing the world for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which He calls \u201cthe Advocate\u201d in this passage.\u00a0 The term \u201cadvocate\u201d is a powerful choice of title.\u00a0 An advocate is one who fights for a cause \u2013 one who cares deeply and passionately and who works tirelessly on behalf of another.\u00a0 The Spirit of God, Jesus says, is our Advocate!<\/p>\n<p>This is the simple truth that makes the rest of the story of our Christian faith so powerful.\u00a0 After Jesus ascends into heaven, His followers receive the Spirit of God to be their strength, to teach them to have faith, and to fill them with hope and love.\u00a0As we read about the miracles of Peter and Paul in the book of Acts or read Paul\u2019s letters to the churches of Europe and Asia, we should keep in mind that the same Spirit of God that gave these early disciples strength and faith has been given to us as well.\u00a0 We, too, can open ourselves up to be filled with God\u2019s Spirit!<\/p>\n<p>We may never experience something quite as traumatic as Pemba did, being trapped under rubble for days.\u00a0 However, we will all experience times of loneliness or worry.\u00a0 It is at those times that we should remember that we have the most powerful Advocate the world will ever know \u2013 the Spirit of God through Jesus!<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We often use metaphors to describe the nature of God.\u00a0 God is often referred to as a &#8220;Father&#8221;.\u00a0 Jesus calls himself the &#8220;bridegroom&#8221; of the Church in the gospels.\u00a0 What metaphor might be useful to describe the role of the Holy Spirit?<\/li>\n<li>Why is &#8220;hope&#8221; an important part of our faith in God?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>As a group, plan a \u201cpep rally\u201d.\u00a0 Instead of focusing on school spirit, though, focus on the Holy Spirit!\u00a0 Some members of your group might paint banners, some might come up with cheers or chants, and so on.\u00a0 The themes will be hope, advocacy, and strength.
