{"id":5536,"date":"2015-04-14T20:31:49","date_gmt":"2015-04-15T01:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=5536"},"modified":"2015-09-29T20:44:41","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T01:44:41","slug":"april-19-2015-do-you-have-anything-to-eat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/april-19-2015-do-you-have-anything-to-eat\/","title":{"rendered":"April 19, 2015 Do You Have Anything to Eat?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"author\">Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ExternalClass4F9623B80EC84B369796566DA11BA13F\">\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why is eating such an important part of most gatherings?<br \/>\n<strong>Do You Have Anything to Eat?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"NoSpacing\">\u201cDo you have anything to eat?\u201d\u00a0 My wife wasn\u2019t raised in the South.\u00a0 Her cultural sensibilities would never allow her to ask for something to eat.\u00a0 I grew up in the South where when someone asked if you wanted anything, you were free to ask.\u00a0What you were not free to do (in the rural South of my childhood) was to refuse food when it was offered to you.\u00a0 Eating was not only something you did to satisfy hunger; you ate as a way of showing respect and mutuality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NoSpacing\">The weekly, ceremonial gathering of Christians is a meal.\u00a0 Jesus instituted this new custom while participating in a very old ritualized meal with his disciples.\u00a0 It is the Christmas dinner or the Thanksgiving lunch that show up in all the \u201cain\u2019t it good to be home\u201d artworks.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing a meal; sharing food; eating \u2013 something happens here that far transcends our ability to understand or to explain.\u00a0Something just feels right about it.\u00a0 Something about it speaks louder than any words or with greater clarity than any explanation.\u00a0 It speaks to our unspoken selves.\u00a0 It communicates to those parts of us which are accessible only by way of emotion and conviction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recall a time when sharing a meal allowed you to learn something about your host (or your guest) that you would have never thought to ask in general conversation.<\/li>\n<li>Allow yourself to chuckle at a &#8220;dinner mishap&#8221;, something like the time my brother-in-law drank from the bowls of water set on the table for folks to rinse their fingers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Third Sunday of Easter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=295070402\">Acts 3:12-19<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=295070455\">1 John 3:1-7<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=295070499\">Luke 24:36b-48<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course they had something to eat.\u00a0 There was almost always something there to eat.\u00a0 Only eight verses earlier they were prepared to share a meal with the resurrected Jesus when he suddenly disappeared (Luke 24:31b).\u00a0\u00a0 Why did they not think to offer him something?\u00a0 Why was he left to ask?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5537 size-medium\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/09\/shutterstock_104421863edit-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_104421863edit\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/09\/shutterstock_104421863edit-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/09\/shutterstock_104421863edit.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The text suggests it may have been a result of their being &#8220;startled and terrified.&#8221;\u00a0 When Jesus came and stood among them, they weren&#8217;t completely sure it was him.\u00a0 Luke&#8217;s narrative suggests they &#8220;thought they were seeing a ghost.&#8221;\u00a0 Before they can reclaim their wits (and their manners) they need to receive the promise Jesus spoke as he appeared among them \u2013 &#8220;Peace be with you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jesus encourages them to not be frightened.\u00a0 He asks them to look at his hands and his feet.\u00a0 &#8220;Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.&#8221;\u00a0 (Side note:\u00a0 this is the ONLY biblical passage that speaks of the &#8220;flesh and bones&#8221; of the risen Lord.)\u00a0 Jesus is no &#8220;ghost.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Ghost,&#8221; in the ears of his contemporaries, implied the immortal soul of all the departed as they awaited whatever fate awaited them next.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Touch me and see (<em>touch me and see with the eyes of faith?)<\/em> that I am not merely a reinforcement of what others have tried to pass as the Truth.&#8221;\u00a0 In the resurrected Jesus we encounter something other than merely the desires and longings of those who consider one life-time as insufficient.\u00a0 &#8220;Touch me and see that the promises of God and the assurances of God are as real as the flesh and bone of my own body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is after this encounter that Jesus asks for something to eat.\u00a0 Some have suggested he asks in order to show that he is not a &#8220;ghost.&#8221;\u00a0 The text tells us the disciples were &#8220;disbelieving and still wondering.&#8221;\u00a0 One writer suggested their disbelief is the enormity of what they have come to realize has happened.\u00a0 They are not wondering whether Jesus is resurrected, they are disbelieving that they would be front and center of this astounding occurrence.\u00a0 If we can begin to think such, then Jesus asking for something to eat might be seen as an acknowledgement of the need for the disciples to be active.\u00a0 What if Jesus is asking for something to eat, not in order to prove he is flesh and bone, but because he is hungry?\u00a0 What if he wants them to realize that seeing him and believing in him means following him and that means feeding the hungry?\u00a0 Earlier (in Matthew&#8217;s account,) Jesus had celebrated the sheep&#8217;s feeding the hungry.\u00a0 Later (in John&#8217;s account) he will instruct them to &#8220;feed my lambs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Resurrected Jesus is not some disembodied ghost.\u00a0 He is not some celestial being.\u00a0 He remains the God who set aside the heavens in order to make his home among us.\u00a0 The Resurrected Jesus, no less than the Rabbi Jesus &#8220;opens our minds to understand the scriptures.&#8221;\u00a0 The forgiveness extended to us makes it possible for us to set aside concerns for ourselves and act on behalf of the other.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do you have anything to eat?&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Sure I do.\u00a0 I can offer you a bologna sandwich, a few scrambled eggs. Some boiled fish.\u00a0 And to feed the hunger that resides deep inside you I can offer\u00a0 you a morsel of bread and a sip of wine \u2013 both of which come with the assurance that she who receives it receives the peace which sets aside all reasons to be startled and terrified.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Come and eat.\u00a0 And when you are finished, maybe you will help me.\u00a0 You see, I have been given so much that I am sure it is enough to share with all the nations.\u00a0 And we will share it, together.\u00a0 And bear witness to the abundance that others will be bewildered to consider.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the difference between an immortal soul (the belief of the Greeks) and a resurrected life (the teaching of the Christian Church)?<\/li>\n<li>Might the culture\u2019s fascination with \u201cghosts\u201d and \u201cghost stories\u201d prove to be a hindrance to understanding God\u2019s actions on Easter morning?<\/li>\n<li>The disciples need to be assured and calmed; but they were also being called into action.\u00a0 How do we balance these two objectives in our ministries?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Give to each member of your group, Sunday School class, or member of your family an ample supply of your favorite on-the-go food.\u00a0 I am partial to those <em>nut and salty<\/em> granola bars; they come in a box of twelve.\u00a0 Instruct those to whom you give a box that they are to look for opportunities to give these away, one at a time, preferably to someone they don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 As they offer a snack, all they need to say is, &#8220;I was given these, and it is more than I need.\u00a0 Can I share one with you?&#8221;\u00a0 Try not to say anything more \u2013 if you can.\u00a0 It really is best if you don&#8217;t.\u00a0 If you must, you could share that at Easter you were reminded off all that you had received, and that in this Easter season you were encouraged to experience that abundance by having so many snack bars that you had to find opportunities to give them away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"NoSpacing\">Precious Lord, take my hand, assure me of your peace.\u00a0 Precious Lord, open your hand, allow me to see the wounds you suffered.\u00a0 Precious Lord, use my hands, to share that which has been given me.\u00a0 Together, let all God\u2019s children say &#8211; Amen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC \u200b Warm-up Question Why is eating such an important part of most gatherings?
