You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Presenting his gospel like a stage play director, John has turned down the lights.\u00a0 Nicodemus comes to Jesus by night because John wants us to see that he is in the dark, in sharp contrast to Jesus, the light of the world (see also John 1:9, 8:12, 9:5).<\/p>\n<p>In their conversation, Jesus is trying to get Nicodemus to see things in a different way, but with limited success.\u00a0 Their disconnect mirrors a passionate divide that runs throughout John&#8217;s gospel between those who accept Jesus and those who reject him.\u00a0 Those who accept him believe, and those who do not &#8220;are condemned already&#8221; as they shun the light in favor of darkness.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is like the dress:\u00a0 the same phenomenon seen very differently, but always sparking a strong reaction.<\/p>\n<p>But John, seeing him differently, would say that Jesus is the light.\u00a0 The world is the dress.\u00a0 (The Greek word for world is<em>cosmos<\/em>, which has various shades of meaning itself\u2014humanity, &#8220;the way things are,&#8221; the powers that resist God, all of creation.\u00a0 John, whose writing covers many levels at once, probably intends all of these simultaneously.)\u00a0 Jesus the light shines upon the world and reveals its true colors.<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus also reveals to us the true colors of God&#8217;s heart:\u00a0 <em>God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>God loyally loves the fickle world.\u00a0 The designer&#8217;s eyes consistently see the world as worth saving.<\/p>\n<p>The price tag attached is steep:\u00a0 Jesus will end up black and blue on the cross. \u00a0Yet the colors of Easter are white and gold.\u00a0 The Light changes everything.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0How do you see Jesus?\u00a0 How is your view different from how others see Jesus?\u00a0 Does he bring love or judgment\u2026or both?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0How do you see the world?\u00a0 Is it good or evil\u2026or both?\u00a0 If the world were two colors, what would they be?<\/li>\n<li>Are there things in your life you keep in the dark because you are afraid they will be exposed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Review the colors of the church year.\u00a0 What do those seasonal color choices reveal about about God\u2019s love and our lives?<\/li>\n<li>Interview someone who is blind, or colorblind.\u00a0 How do they \u201csee\u201d (receive and process what is happening around them in) the world?\u00a0 What do they notice that people with sight do not?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Light of the world, shine God\u2019s love into our lives.\u00a0 Train our eyes to see your truth, and transform our works into bright witnesses to God\u2019s beautiful grace, in order that those who see us would be drawn not toward death but into life.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Hiortdahl, Overland Park, KS \u200b Warm-up Question What color is the dress?
