{"id":5499,"date":"2014-12-02T19:36:55","date_gmt":"2014-12-03T00:36:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=5499"},"modified":"2015-09-29T19:40:17","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T00:40:17","slug":"december-7-2014-invictus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/december-7-2014-invictus\/","title":{"rendered":"December 7, 2014&#8211;Invictus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>David Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL<\/p>\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>What sort of vestments (special clothing) are worn by people leading your worship services?\u00a0 Do you feel that these vestments change or enhance your worship and fellowship?<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Invictus<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>A casual glance at the cover of the October issue of <em>Airmen<\/em> magazine, the official magazine of the United States Air Force, might have left readers stunned.\u00a0 In the cover photo, a 28-year-old woman with dark hair pulled loosely back holds a large barbell loaded with weights high above her head.\u00a0 The woman, retired Captain Sarah Evans, looks incredibly strong and athletic.\u00a0 There is just one surprise: she only has one leg.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5500 size-full\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/09\/shutterstock_125563616edit.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_125563616edit\" width=\"250\" height=\"219\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During a deployment to Afghanistan, Capt. Evans was diagnosed with stage three bone cancer in her left hip.\u00a0 Doctors worked quickly to save her life, but were forced to amputate Capt. Evans&#8217; leg below her pelvis.\u00a0 Some of us, if we had this happen to us, might feel the need to slow down and be limited by this change.\u00a0 Not so with Capt. Evans.\u00a0 On the contrary, Evans has become a champion of the Wounded Warrior project, has continued to work for the Air Education Training Command, and has even climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa!<\/p>\n<p>What brought Capt. Evans to the cover of <em>Airmen<\/em> magazine, though, was her determination to compete in the Invictus Games, held in Great Britain.\u00a0 &#8220;Invictus&#8221; means &#8220;unconquered&#8221; \u2013 an appropriate name for a set of Olympic-like Games in which the wounded warriors of fourteen nations vie against one another in imposing events.\u00a0 This year was the first for the Invictus Games, which were conceived by Prince Harry of Wales after he saw the inter-service Warrior Games during a visit to Colorado.\u00a0 Pressure was high for the USA Team at the Invictus Games.\u00a0 After all, they were not only representing their country, but also the spirit of determination that drove them to keep themselves strong and mighty, even in the face of adversity.\u00a0 In the end, their victory was so much more than simply winning at an event.\u00a0 Each competitor showed the triumph of spirit and fortitude over fear and resignation.<\/p>\n<p>And Capt. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Anyone meeting John the Baptist for the first time would surely know something about him was different.\u00a0 First of all, this cousin of Jesus dressed far differently from others, wearing \u201cclothing made of camel\u2019s hair, with a leather belt around his waist.\u201d\u00a0 He also subsisted on strange food: locusts and wild honey.\u00a0 What a sight he must have been!<\/p>\n<p>It was John, though, who was called to be \u201ca voice calling in the wilderness\u201d, meant to proclaim the coming of Jesus to the people of God.\u00a0 John was sent to a complacent world to announce something new and incredible to a people desperately in need.\u00a0 It\u2019s no wonder that he wanted to get people\u2019s attention for that!<\/p>\n<p>John was a \u201choly man\u201d in the true sense of the world.\u00a0 \u201cHoly\u201d means \u201cset apart for a purpose\u201d.\u00a0 John wasn\u2019t worried about fitting in.\u00a0 John accepted that his faith called him to be set apart for a purpose.\u00a0 There were certainly those who thought that John was crazy, or at least that he was a bit weird.\u00a0 In the end, though, it was John\u2019s refusal to conform to his society that helped him preach a powerful witness to God\u2019s people.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When is it important to conform to what people expect of you?<\/li>\n<li>How can you be a powerful witness to your faith by being different from others?<\/li>\n<li>Many churches have very different traditions of pastoral vestments and even acceptable dress by members of the congregation.\u00a0 Why might some people believe that special clothing and vestments are helpful or necessary?\u00a0 Why might others disagree?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><strong>Activity Suggestion<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>One part of the pastoral vestments in the ELCA is the stole worn behind the pastor\u2019s neck.\u00a0 This item is a sign and symbol of the ordination of the pastor, and it is laden with imagery and significance.\u00a0 As a gift to your congregation\u2019s pastor, craft a stole or fabric or paper to decorate and present.\u00a0 Select a theme for the stole, such as virtues and gifts or Gospel stories.<\/p>\n<p>Be aware that your pastor may or may not elect to wear the stole during a service; stoles are traditionally colored to match the liturgical season.\u00a0 Regardless, however, your pastor will greatly appreciate the thought and care taken to craft this important symbol!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Heavenly Father, you call each of us to a life of holiness.\u00a0 You give us the strength and the conviction to accept this call, and for this we are always thankful.\u00a0 We praise you for giving us new life and new purpose with every new morning.\u00a0 Bless us to be your holy hands to a world longing for your touch.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name we pray, Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL \u200b Warm-up Question What sort of vestments (special clothing) are worn by people leading your worship services?\u00a0 Do you feel that these vestments change or enhance your worship and fellowship?
