{"id":5479,"date":"2014-10-14T19:17:35","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T00:17:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=5479"},"modified":"2015-09-29T19:19:40","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T00:19:40","slug":"october-19-2014-why-pay-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/october-19-2014-why-pay-taxes\/","title":{"rendered":"October 19, 2014&#8211;Why Pay Taxes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"author\">Erik Ullestad&#8211;West Des Moines, IA<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ExternalClassD2DA3F1E7E644C9A9579DC34C831FD7D\">\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How do you stay connected with your friends?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Pay Taxes?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cell phone usage is at an all-time high.\u00a0 Many people are getting rid of their landline phone and exclusively using a mobile device for all their communication needs.\u00a0 The pre-teen market has grown significantly in the last five years.\u00a0 The average age for a kid\u2019s first cell phone is 11 years old and 77% of kids ages 12-17 have a cell phone.\u00a0 Contributing to this growth in mobile device usage are an abundance of new devices entering the market place (like two varieties of Apple\u2019s new iPhone 6) and wireless service providers that offer a wide variety of monthly plan options suited to the needs of the customer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5480 size-full\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/09\/shutterstock_13006300edit.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_13006300edit\" width=\"250\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Phone companies and wireless providers aren\u2019t the only groups who are profiting from the mobile boom.\u00a0 Federal, state, and local governments are seeing increased revenue as a result of taxes applied to cell phone plans.\u00a0 According to a study by the Washington D.C.-based Tax Foundation, the U.S. average combined tax rate for wireless plans is 17.05%.\u00a0 The federal rate is currently fixed at 5.82%, which is added to the varying state-local rates.\u00a0 Washington State has the highest rate at 18.6 percent, compared to neighboring state of Oregon which has the lowest at 1.76 percent.<\/p>\n<p>For some, the issue of high cell phone taxes is political.\u00a0 Governor Rick Scott has promised to give the people of Florida at $120 million annual reduction in the communications services tax.\u00a0 Others see this as a justice issue.\u00a0 The Centers for Disease control reports that over 56 percent of adults living in poverty have only wireless service as their means of communication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you have a cell phone?\u00a0 If so, how do you use it?\u00a0 (Social media, texting, phone calls, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>How much money do you think is an appropriate amount to spend on a cell phone?<\/li>\n<li>What do you think is a reasonable tax rate for wireless service plans?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Lectionary 29<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=279358936\">Isaiah 45:1-7<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=279358977\">1 Thessalonians 1:1-10<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=279359027\">Matthew 22:15-22<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. [17]&#8221; This was a trick question.\u00a0 If Jesus answered &#8220;yes&#8221;, the church leaders would be upset because they felt taxation \u2013 especially the poll tax \u2013 was unjust.\u00a0 If he answered &#8220;no&#8221;, the emperor could throw Jesus in jail for challenging the law.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus offers an answer that leaves both parties speechless.\u00a0 He says, &#8220;Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor&#8217;s, and give to God the things that are God&#8217;s [21].&#8221; In saying this, Jesus not only silenced his adversaries, but he lifted up the importance of giving back to God.\u00a0 The money that was to be given to the emperor was just money \u2013 an idolatrous coin with the face of Caesar on it.\u00a0 God, the creator and ruler of all, blesses us more than any earthly leader ever could \u2013 which means we have a lot to give back.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to &#8220;giving to God&#8221;, students might remember the 3 T&#8217;s \u2013 time, talents, and treasures.\u00a0 When we give to God in this way, it&#8217;s not about <em>acts<\/em> of service; it&#8217;s about <em>lives<\/em> of service.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about a life-altering change in the way we look at our tangible and intangible gifts.\u00a0 Like Abraham, God blesses us so that we may be a blessing to others [Genesis 12:3].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How did the Pharisees try to trick Jesus?<\/li>\n<li>Why do you think the Pharisees sent their disciples to confront Jesus instead of talk to Jesus themselves?<\/li>\n<li>How did Jesus answer the question about taxes?<\/li>\n<li>What do you think Jesus&#8217; words mean to you today?\u00a0 What does it say about your priorities?<\/li>\n<li>In Jesus&#8217; day, taxes were often associated with corrupt leaders who made themselves rich at the expense of the poor.\u00a0 What do you think about taxes today?\u00a0 Are they important?\u00a0 Why do you feel that way?<\/li>\n<li>What are ways that God has blessed you?<\/li>\n<li>What is one way that you can share these blessings with others this week?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consider making a commitment as a group to financially support a local, national, or global organization that helps other people.\u00a0 Ask the group if they have any suggestions.\u00a0 If they don&#8217;t, offer some of your own.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll want to research this in advance.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/resources.elca.org\/Products-ELCA_Good_Gifts.html\">ELCA Good Gifts<\/a> can give you some great ideas.\u00a0 Discuss all the suggestions, and then try to come to a decision as a group.\u00a0 Sign a covenant that everyone will bring a regular offering to help support this project.\u00a0 You may want to make a poster that demonstrates how much money is given each week\/month to this ministry.\u00a0 Inform parents and other congregation members of the way that the young people are &#8220;giving to God what is God&#8217;s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Generous God, we give you thanks for the ways in which you bless us.\u00a0 Help us to be in tune with the gifts we have received, and help us to use those gifts to bless the lives of those around us.\u00a0 Open our eyes to the needs of others and give us the strength to share words of peace, hope, and love to the world.\u00a0 For the sake of Jesus, we pray, amen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Erik Ullestad&#8211;West Des Moines, IA \u200b Warm-up Question How do you stay connected with your friends?
