{"id":5258,"date":"2014-04-15T07:37:36","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T12:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=5258"},"modified":"2014-04-04T13:31:43","modified_gmt":"2014-04-04T18:31:43","slug":"5258","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/5258\/","title":{"rendered":"April 20, 2014&#8211;Quakes of Fear and Joy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Bryan Jaster, Winchester, VA<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>Have you ever been in an earthquake?\u00a0 Where were you and what happened?<\/p>\n<h3>Quakes of Fear and Joy<\/h3>\n<p>On April 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2014, an 8.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast shook Chile.\u00a0 The next day a 7.6 magnitude struck the region.\u00a0 Landslides, power outages, collapsed buildings, and people fleeing homes resulted.\u00a0\u00a0 Tsunami warnings sprang up and first responders were on high alert.<\/p>\n<p>Almost one million people were evacuated.\u00a0 About 300 prisoners escaped from a prison in Iquique, a northern port city in Chile.\u00a0 Traffic clogged the many of northern Chile&#8217;s streets.\u00a0 Fear spread as people remembered an 8.8 magnitude quake on February 27, 2010, which killed 500 people and triggered a building toppling tsunami.<\/p>\n<p>In the hours after, a surprising, different story sprang up.\u00a0 Well planned and executed evacuations saved countless lives.\u00a0 Most homes and skyscrapers survived unscathed due to well followed building codes developed in response to past earthquakes.\u00a0 Most of the escaped inmates turned themselves in a week after the quakes.\u00a0 People have returned home thankful for life.\u00a0 While the quakes struck fear, the community is now moved by joy and thanksgiving for new life. <b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you had been in the earthquake in Chile, how do you think you would have acted?\u00a0 Are you surprised the prisoners returned to jail?<\/li>\n<li>Should Chile be afraid of future earthquakes?\u00a0 What have they learned?<\/li>\n<li>When has your fear turned into joy?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, April 20, 2014 (Resurrection of our Lord, Easter Sunday)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=263621385\">Acts 10:34-43<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=263621567\">Colossians 3:1-4<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=263621493\">Matthew 28:1-10<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/04\/Easter2014edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5271\" style=\"margin: 5px\" alt=\"Easter2014edit\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/04\/Easter2014edit.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/04\/Easter2014edit.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/04\/Easter2014edit-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>Today is Easter.\u00a0 There are flowers, bunnies, chocolate, fancy clothes and joyous songs.\u00a0 Families gather; crowds worship; good food is eaten and familiar stories are told.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look more closely at the Easter story from Matthew.\u00a0 It begins with an earthquake and in fear.<\/p>\n<p>Fear:\u00a0 The One who they thought might be the messiah may be yet another failure and is gone.<\/p>\n<p>Fear:\u00a0 When the angel rolled away the stone.\u00a0 Read again:\u00a0 \u201cthe guards shook and became like dead men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fear:\u00a0 It was beating in the hearts of the two women named Mary who rushed from the tomb to tell the disciples.<\/p>\n<p>Fear:\u00a0 When the risen Jesus appeared to the disciples.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, in the Easter story with earthquakes there is joy. <b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Joy:\u00a0 When the women receive the message that indeed Jesus is no longer dead, but risen.<\/p>\n<p>Joy:\u00a0 The angel beckons the women to tell the disciples he is alive and you will see him in Galilee. They run to tell this news.<\/p>\n<p>Joy: Jesus&#8217; presence and greeting moves the disciples to worship.<\/p>\n<p>Joy:\u00a0 Jesus gives the disciples a new mission to go and tell.<\/p>\n<p>Easter has quakes of fear and joy present together.\u00a0 As much as we see the happy, bright side of Easter when we gather today, remember this: The risen Jesus brings both quakes of holy fear and joy into the world.\u00a0 On this first day of a new week, hear the news that Jesus comes into the world\u2019s quakes, inviting you to witness to resurrection in the middle of both fear and joy.\u00a0 <b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you think the soldiers were afraid of the angel?\u00a0 Why were the two women named Mary afraid?\u00a0\u00a0 Why were the disciples afraid?\u00a0 Would you have responded as they did?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>When has your life been shaken?\u00a0 How did you get through it?\u00a0\u00a0 Why were you afraid?\u00a0 Did you find joy?<\/li>\n<li>As you celebrate Easter, what message do you tell to others?\u00a0 What does the risen Jesus want you to do?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Think of a way you as a group can tell and show the Good News of Christ\u2019s resurrection in your home or in your community.\u00a0 Do it.<\/li>\n<li>Make a plan to visit someone whose life has been filled with fear.\u00a0 Bring that person food, balloons, cards, candy, tell jokes, and do whatever might bring joy.\u00a0 Consider a mini parade.<\/li>\n<li>Travel to a neighboring town.\u00a0 Listen and look for ways that Jesus is alive in that community. <b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>God of the empty tomb, help us to see you in all of life&#8217;s fears and joys.\u00a0 As earthquakes come, may our fears be transformed into the joy of knowing you.\u00a0 Help us to go and tell the news that you are alive in our homes, streets, schools and world.\u00a0 Thank you for the death and resurrection of your Son today.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Bryan Jaster, Winchester, VA &nbsp; Warm-up Question Have you ever been in an earthquake?\u00a0 Where were you and what happened?
