{"id":5000,"date":"2013-12-31T07:42:57","date_gmt":"2013-12-31T12:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=5000"},"modified":"2013-12-24T15:27:25","modified_gmt":"2013-12-24T20:27:25","slug":"january-5-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/january-5-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"January 5, 2014&#8211;Becoming Human"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Stephanie Opsal, West Des Moines, IA<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>Can anything truly replace a human?<\/p>\n<h3>Becoming Human<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/12\/drone-edit.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5016\" style=\"margin: 5px\" alt=\"drone-edit\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/12\/drone-edit.gif\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos, proudly announced drone air deliveries as the next big innovation, during his interview on \u201c60 Minutes\u201d in early December.\u00a0 Amazon.com processes thousands of orders every day and many subscribe to Amazon Prime, which offers 2-day shipping to its customers.\u00a0 To accommodate all the orders more efficiently, Amazon is testing \u201coctocopters\u201d that could take packages weighing less than five pounds and fly them to customers\u2019 homes in thirty minutes. \u00a0Amazon Prime Air is a service the company hopes to begin as early as 2015.<\/p>\n<p>As Amazon plans to deliver packages in the air via these robots, the general public raises many questions and concerns.\u00a0 How far can they travel?\u00a0 Can they withstand inclement weather?\u00a0 What if people try to interfere or shoot them down?<\/p>\n<p>At this point, the drones can only deliver to homes within a 10-mile radius of an Amazon distribution center and the battery life of the copters needs to be improved..\u00a0 Amazon will need to obtain the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration to begin and they must advance the drones\u2019 technology further to make it dependable during heavy precipitation.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, robot technology is on the rise, from Amazon\u2019s Air delivery service to Google\u2019s ideas of driverless cars.\u00a0 Can robots effectively replace\u00a0 people in these jobs or will society miss the service only a human being can give?\u00a0 Our country will soon find out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Do you like the idea of driverless air delivery of packages?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>What problems could arise from services such as Amazon Prime Air?<\/li>\n<li>What benefits could these technologies offer?<\/li>\n<li>If you could have a robot to do one thing for you, what would it be?<\/li>\n<li>What is one technological thing in your life or society that you wish did not exist?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, January 5, 2014 (Second Sunday of Christmas)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=254831703\">Jeremiah 31:7-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=254831734\">Ephesians 1:3-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=254831763\">John 1:[1-9] 10-18<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>John uses descriptive language to explain how Jesus Christ (the Word, the light, the one and only) is miraculously both divine and human.\u00a0 John the Baptist came before him to testify that the Son of God, the long-awaited savior proclaimed in the Scriptures, was coming into the world.<\/p>\n<p>God defied everyone\u2019s expectations.\u00a0 Many expected the Lord to come save them as a mighty conquering king who would defeat Rome, but Jesus was born into the world as a tiny baby.\u00a0 He chose to associate with the sinners and helpless before the rich and proud.<\/p>\n<p>Even before this, the Gospel describes, \u201cThe Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us\u201d (1:14a).\u00a0 \u201cThe Word\u201d is Jesus, God\u2019s Son, but the different perspectives of John\u2019s audience make this concept even more significant.\u00a0 Both Jews and Greeks listened to the message written here.\u00a0 Jews understood \u201cthe Word\u201d to be an expression for God, as when God spoke creation into being, spoke His messages of truth through the prophets, and gave His words of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai.<\/p>\n<p>Greeks, on the other hand, thought of \u201cthe Word\u201d as an element of reason, a guiding principle for the world.\u00a0 Amazingly, they were both right!\u00a0 Greeks could not believe \u201cthe Word was <i>God<\/i>\u201d while Jews were shocked at \u201cthe Word became <i>flesh<\/i>\u201d.\u00a0 Jesus defied earthly understanding by coming as one being simultaneously 100% God and 100% man.\u00a0 He was around for all time, beginning with God the Father in creation, and yet\u00a0 he became a man on earth, to be with His people and ultimately sacrifice himself in their place.\u00a0 Forgiveness of sin and redemption to eternal life became reality through Jesus\u2019 resurrection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him\u201d (1:10).\u00a0 Maybe because Jesus came as a humble, servant leader, the people did not see Him coming. But John proclaims a promise for the people living 2000 years ago, as well as for us today: \u201cYet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God\u2014children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband\u2019s will, but born of God\u201d (1:12-13).<\/p>\n<p>God came into the world so that all people may have new spiritual birth.\u00a0 What a gift!\u00a0 We can live as \u201cco-heirs of Christ\u201d (Romans 8:17) in glorious freedom all because Jesus came to earth as a human that first Christmas!<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What are some examples from the Bible of Jesus\u2019 \u201cdivinity\u201d or \u201cgodliness\u201d?\u00a0 What are some examples of His humanity?<\/li>\n<li>Share a story of a time you acted differently than others expected.\u00a0 What was their reaction?\u00a0 How did you feel?<\/li>\n<li>Can you think of any other examples of Jesus acting in ways different than the people expected?\u00a0 (e.g. Luke 23:35, Philippians 2:5-11)<\/li>\n<li>Today we read about robots trying to take the place of humans and God taking the form of a human.\u00a0 Who did it better?\u00a0 What could God do that was better than anything humans could ever do?\u00a0 Do you think robots can do any things better than humans?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Read through the John 1:1-18 again, replacing every occurrence of \u201cthe Word\u201d or \u201cthe light\u201d with the name \u201cJesus\u201d.\u00a0 Does the passage make more sense to you?\u00a0 What parts stood out to you this time?<\/li>\n<li>Listen to the song \u201cJesus in Disguise\u201d by Brandon Heath (on YouTube at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5AXD3Xq6Z6U\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5AXD3Xq6Z6U<\/a>) and pay attention to the lyrics.\u00a0 What do you think the artist is saying?<\/li>\n<li>Imagine that you are John the Baptist.\u00a0 Would it be hard to come before the Savior and have the purpose of taking no credit for yourself, but rather pointing everyone to Jesus?\u00a0 Would you feel honored or forgotten?\u00a0 Write down some firsthand feelings you would have, and share them with your group. \u00a0Feel free to reference other Bible passages on John the Baptist, such as Matthew 11:11; Acts 1, 10, 11, 13, 18 and 19; Isaiah 40:3; and Malachi 4:5.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike John the Baptist, we were born after Jesus\u2019 time on earth.\u00a0 What is our purpose here today?\u00a0 Have a discussion with your group on things we can do to live out our faith in Jesus and make the most of our time living on earth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Savior,\u00a0 thank you so much for coming into the world as a human for us.\u00a0 You came to know us, relate to us, and save us from our sins, because we could not do that on our own.\u00a0 Help us remember that You are always with us, and we praise you that you came to the earth that first Christmas.\u00a0 We love you so much.\u00a0 May everyone on earth remember your precious Christmas story and feel your abundant blessings in their lives.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 powerful name we pray.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Stephanie Opsal, West Des Moines, IA &nbsp; Warm-up Question Can anything truly replace a human?
