{"id":4871,"date":"2013-11-12T08:06:32","date_gmt":"2013-11-12T13:06:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=4871"},"modified":"2013-11-07T11:24:36","modified_gmt":"2013-11-07T16:24:36","slug":"november-17-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/november-17-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"November 17, 2013&#8211;Tick, Tick, BOOM!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by David Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What natural disasters and dangers exist where you live?\u00a0 How do you prepare for an emergency situation at home and at school?<\/p>\n<h3>Tick, Tick, BOOM!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/11\/shutterstock_118088911edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4885\" style=\"margin: 5px\" alt=\"shutterstock_118088911edit\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/11\/shutterstock_118088911edit.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a>The National Geographic Channel show \u201cDoomsday Preppers\u201d chronicles the lives and practices of \u201csurvivalists,\u201d people who put a great deal of thought and effort into preparing for major catastrophes.\u00a0 These survivalists are concerned about a wide range of disasters, anything from natural disasters to the end of the world.\u00a0 Their preparations can include anything from the construction of survival bunkers to planting self-sustaining gardens, storing fuel, and hoarding food.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Braxton and Kara Southwick of Salt Lake City were the first \u201cPreppers\u201d to be profiled on the show.\u00a0 In an interview, the Southwicks offered some insight into their motivation for all of this preparation.\u00a0 While Braxton doesn\u2019t believe in any specific doomsday scenario, he says that he is generally concerned about changes he perceives in the world.\u00a0 And while he doesn\u2019t think that the world is going to be ending any minute, he doesn\u2019t regret being prepared.\u00a0 As he puts it, if you\u2019re preparing for a doomsday scenario, \u201cyou&#8217;re just as prepared for a hurricane or an economic collapse or a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Southwicks admit that their prepping may strike others as \u201ckooky\u201d, but they plan to keep at it.\u00a0 Even if no disaster strikes, they say that they enjoy \u201cprepping\u201d as a hobby.\u00a0 As Braxton says, \u201cIt&#8217;s our little pet project. Some people collect China and trinkets. We collect food and other things. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>A \u201cdoomsday prepper\u201d would certainly be riled up by Jesus\u2019 words in the Gospel!\u00a0 In today\u2019s Gospel reading, Jesus gives his followers quite an apocalyptic view, warning them, &#8220;Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sounds frightening, indeed!\u00a0 But Jesus isn\u2019t trying to scare his followers.\u00a0 In fact, he points out that even before any of those things happen, his disciples will find themselves persecuted for following Jesus and proclaiming the Good News of God to the entire world.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these predictions, Jesus doesn\u2019t advise his followers to hoard food or hide from the authorities.\u00a0 He even tells them \u201cnot to prepare [their] defense in advance\u201d.\u00a0 Those who want to follow the will of God should not try to prepare for every possibility, but to simply trust God and do God\u2019s work from day-to-day.\u00a0 Imagine living that way!\u00a0 What would it be like to live each day as if it could be the last chance you have to do God\u2019s work?\u00a0 What would you do differently?<\/p>\n<p>In the book of Acts, we find that the early Church did live very differently after hearing Jesus\u2019 words.\u00a0 In Acts 2:44-47, we find, &#8220;All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Living for God today can change our priorities.\u00a0 We value people more than things.\u00a0 We spend more time with God and less time by ourselves.\u00a0 We treasure our families \u2013 both at home and in our church.\u00a0 And what\u2019s more, God richly blesses us and gives us more and more to be thankful for.<\/p>\n<p>And so, remember:\u00a0 Jesus is coming \u2013 <b>look busy!<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0How does your family set aside time to spend together?\u00a0 What about your youth group?<\/li>\n<li>What would you say is the most important thing you did last week?\u00a0 Why would you consider it important?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<p>Ephesians 6: 13-17 lists the Armor of God, including such things as the Breastplate of Righteousness and the Sword of the Spirit.\u00a0 Write your own list: God\u2019s Emergency Kit.\u00a0 Use Ephesians as a model for crafting an allegory or series of images which describes how we are to live each day.<\/p>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>God our Protector and Provider, we thank you for the rich blessings you bestow upon our families, our church, and our world.\u00a0 We are grateful for all that you provide us on a daily basis and we know that we often become too comfortable with your gifts.\u00a0 Please help us to remember to be your hands to a world in need and guide us to do your will today.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name we pray. \u00a0Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by David Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL &nbsp; Warm-up Question What natural disasters and dangers exist where you live?\u00a0 How do you prepare for an emergency situation at home and at school?
