{"id":4327,"date":"2013-02-19T07:50:32","date_gmt":"2013-02-19T12:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=4327"},"modified":"2013-02-18T16:11:09","modified_gmt":"2013-02-18T21:11:09","slug":"february-24-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/february-24-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"February 24, 2013&#8211;Daring Danger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Erik Ulstead, West Des Moines, IA<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What\u2019s the most heroic thing you\u2019ve seen someone do?<\/p>\n<h3>Daring Danger<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/02\/shutterstock_90565891edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-4345\" style=\"margin: 5px\" alt=\"shutterstock_90565891edit\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/02\/shutterstock_90565891edit.jpg\" width=\"270\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a>Firefighters are often called into dangerous circumstances.\u00a0 Typically, they are asked to rescue people from burning buildings and fiery explosions.\u00a0 Earlier this month, local firefighters in Kokomo, Indiana found themselves trying to extract a dog from a partially frozen creek.<\/p>\n<p>Like most dogs, Chancellor (or Chance, for short) loved to chase squirrels.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019ll chase anything with fur or feathers, but he always comes back,\u201d remarked owner Jimmy Prestler.\u00a0 Chance pursued the squirrel to a nearby park and onto a patch of ice.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m guessing the squirrel made it across the creek, but the dog didn\u2019t,\u201d said Dave King, battalion chief with the fire department.\u00a0 A person driving through the park saw the dog fall through the ice and stopped to help, but he was unable to save Chance and called the fire department.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighter Derek Pounds was given the chilly task of rescuing Chance.\u00a0 After a few minutes Pounds was able to slide across the creek pull the dog out of the water, with the aid of a cold-water rescue suit and an ice sled.\u00a0 Chance was shaking violently and had icicles frozen to his face.\u00a0 Pounds wrapped him in a blanket to warm and dry the dog.\u00a0 King said the dog likely would have died if he\u2019d been in the creek much longer.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s lucky someone saw what happened and called,\u201d he said. \u201cHad he not seen him, the dog would have frozen to death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prestler expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the rescue.\u00a0 \u201cI think I would have to get therapy if he didn\u2019t survive,\u201d Prestler said.\u00a0 \u201cWhenever I come home, it\u2019s like seeing my brother after five years.\u00a0 Chance just goes nuts every time.\u00a0 They not only saved his life, they saved mine, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>When have you seen public servants (firefighters, police officers, road construction workers, etc.) in action?<\/li>\n<li>What do you think about the owner\u2019s comments about his dog?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever been asked to help someone in need? You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot going on in these few verses in Luke 13.\u00a0 Jesus had just wrapped up a teaching and healing spree in various communities outside of Jerusalem.\u00a0 With each stop along the way, the crowds grew larger.\u00a0 Everyone wanted to see this Jesus they had heard so much about.\u00a0 However, not everyone was a fan of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Herod, the ruler of that region, recently beheaded John the Baptist, Jesus\u2019 friend and mentor.\u00a0 Many Pharisees (the nice ones, not the mean ones) were concerned that Herod would come after Jesus next.\u00a0 They told Jesus to leave Jerusalem and go into hiding.\u00a0 However, Jesus was defiant, insisting that the work of casting out demons and performing cures was too important for him to hide.<\/p>\n<p>He also pauses for a moment to express his dismay for the whole city of Jerusalem.\u00a0 Jesus is sad for the way Jerusalem has treated the people God has sent there as prophets and ministers.\u00a0 Furthermore, he knows that he will suffer a similar fate when he returns (for what we now know as Palm Sunday).<\/p>\n<p>We learn a lot about Jesus in this passage.\u00a0 First, it\u2019s clear that Jesus is one who protects and heals people who are sick or broken.\u00a0 Second, we see that Jesus is committed to complete the tasks to which he was called.\u00a0 Finally, we discover that, regardless of their past, Jesus still has concern for the well-being of the entire community.\u00a0 Through all of this, Jesus reveals that God has a heart for particular places and times.\u00a0 God cares about your town\u2026your school\u2026your family\u2026your church.\u00a0 Like a mother hen covering her chicks, or a firefighter rescuing a dog,\u00a0 Jesus seeks to protect us \u2013 and calls us to shelter others in need.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you think the Pharisees are warning Jesus about Herod\u2019s plot?<\/li>\n<li>Did Jesus make the right choice to stay in Jerusalem?<\/li>\n<li>Who are some people God is calling you to protect and care for this week?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Grab some craft sticks and glue.\u00a0 Attempt to build a building that can\u2019t be knocked over by someone blowing on it.\u00a0 Talk about how different structures are used to protect people from bad weather or evil people.<\/li>\n<li>Contact a local animal shelter.\u00a0 Offer to bring your group to learn about the work they do.\u00a0 Consider volunteering some time to care for animals or do repairs around their facility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>God, we thank you for sending your Son to care for us.\u00a0 May we provide comfort, hope, and peace to the people we encounter this week.\u00a0 In Jesus name, amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Erik Ulstead, West Des Moines, IA &nbsp; Warm-up Question What\u2019s the most heroic thing you\u2019ve seen someone do?
