{"id":3904,"date":"2012-10-02T07:54:43","date_gmt":"2012-10-02T12:54:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=3904"},"modified":"2012-10-03T14:49:36","modified_gmt":"2012-10-03T19:49:36","slug":"october-7-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/october-7-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"October 7, 2012&#8211;Poor Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Erik\u00a0 Ullestad, West Des Moines, IA<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What\u2019s your favorite memory of when you were a child?<\/p>\n<h3>Poor Children<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2012\/10\/shutterstock_490587edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3923\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2012\/10\/shutterstock_490587edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a>The school bell rings at Sampson Middle School.\u00a0 Within seconds the campus is flooded with pre-teens who are on their way home.\u00a0 Their evenings are filled with homework, texting, TV, and web surfing.\u00a0 Jessica is one of a growing number of children with a slightly different routine.\u00a0 She walks to the local shopping mall to do her homework in the food court.\u00a0 When she finishes, Jessica looks around for uneaten food that hadn\u2019t yet made it to the garbage.\u00a0 From there, she heads to the parking lot and enters a rusty old van where her younger brother and parents welcome her \u201chome\u201d for the night.\u00a0 Most of her classmates don\u2019t know it, but Jessica is homeless.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 1.6 million children are homeless in the United States; approximately 1 of every 45 people under the age of 18.\u00a0 Schools, churches, and social service agencies have seen needs rise among children and families in recent years.\u00a0 Youth homelessness has risen 28% since 2007, a trend that doesn\u2019t look to taper off any time soon.\u00a0 Over 25% of children are living in poverty in America.\u00a0 As their parents bring home smaller paychecks it becomes more difficult to pay the rent or mortgage.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica goes to school early to shower in the locker room and finish her homework.\u00a0 She gets good grades but she\u2019s worried about keeping up, now that some of her teachers are requiring assignments to be turned in online.\u00a0 She doesn\u2019t have regular access to a computer and is afraid of asking to borrow someone else\u2019s.\u00a0 It is likely that her schoolwork will suffer if she remains homeless.\u00a0 Children in this demographic area are more likely than their peers to suffer from hunger, educational deficiencies, illness, and psychological disorders.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you know any students in your school who are homeless?<\/li>\n<li>How would your activities change if you had no home?<\/li>\n<li>What would you say to a friend if they told you they are homeless?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, October 7, 2012 (Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=215491705\">Genesis 2:18-24<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=215491733\"> Hebrews 1:1-4, 2:5-12<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=215491762\">Mark 10:2-16<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>Jesus had been doing a lot of teaching and healing in recent days.\u00a0 He took the disciples and went back to the wilderness near Judah.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t take long, however, for the crowds to find him there.\u00a0 As he was teaching, the religious leaders showed up and tried to trick him.\u00a0 They asked for Jesus\u2019 thoughts on the divorce laws, which was a tricky topic. \u00a0The Torah (given to Moses) stated that only a man could initiate a divorce (Deut. 24:1-3).\u00a0 Roman law, which applied to the land of Judah, permitted a woman to initiate divorce as well.\u00a0 Ultimately, they were looking for Jesus to make a political statement about his allegiance.\u00a0 Choosing sides would have had big repercussions for Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of taking the bait, Jesus brought everything back to Creation.\u00a0 He isn\u2019t interested in splitting hairs over what is lawful.\u00a0 Jesus reminds the people that the purpose of marriage is to create partnerships.\u00a0 Marriage is a blessing that is intended to be life giving for both people.\u00a0 When the relationship fractures and disintegrates, it is because of sin.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Luther reminds us that sin is a condition.\u00a0 Not only does everyone sin, but everyone is a sinner.\u00a0 All of us are in need of God\u2019s grace to forgive and redeem us.\u00a0 As fellow sinners, it\u2019s unhelpful for us to make a list of people\u2019s sins, or presume that some sins are worse than others.\u00a0 The missteps of ourselves and others reveal communal need of a Savior.<\/p>\n<p>Many interpret Jesus\u2019 comments on divorce as seeking to protect innocent people in relationships.\u00a0 Verses 11-12 can be condensed and nuanced to say, \u201cWhoever divorces their spouse for the purpose of marrying another person commits adultery.\u201d\u00a0 The idea of trading a spouse for a \u201cbetter\u201d often left the divorced person without a home, food, or family to support her.\u00a0 As he has done so many times before, Jesus uses this discussion to demonstrate care for those in need.<\/p>\n<p>From there, Jesus continues his advocacy for the helpless in society by chastising the disciples for keeping children from getting near to Jesus.\u00a0 After all, children in those days were considered slightly more important than stray animals.\u00a0 Jesus elevates their status by telling the disciples to aspire to being like the children in their attitude toward the kingdom of heaven.\u00a0 Time after time, it is the least, the last, and the lowly among us that Jesus shows partiality to \u2013 and he calls us to do the same.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>How successful were the Pharisees in tricking Jesus?<\/li>\n<li>What do you think of Jesus\u2019 answer about divorce?<\/li>\n<li>How can someone \u201creceive the kingdom of heaven like a child\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Have each person make a family tree.\u00a0 Include as many branches as they know of.\u00a0 Use this as an opportunity to talk about the blessing of family, in all kinds of different configurations.\u00a0 Affirm God\u2019s presence in these relationships, even in the imperfect ones.<\/li>\n<li>Shelters for women and children provide care and safety for vulnerable people in society.\u00a0 As a class, learn about how you can assist these organizations in your community.\u00a0 Consider creating care packages or creative artwork for the shelters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>God, thank you for the gift of marriage, families, and children.\u00a0 Help us to see your face in the faces of the people we see every day.\u00a0 Give us patience when we are frustrated, and hope when we become discouraged.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Erik\u00a0 Ullestad, West Des Moines, IA &nbsp; Warm-up Question What\u2019s your favorite memory of when you were a child?
