{"id":3803,"date":"2012-09-11T08:11:38","date_gmt":"2012-09-11T13:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=3803"},"modified":"2012-09-06T13:08:29","modified_gmt":"2012-09-06T18:08:29","slug":"september-16-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/september-16-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"September 16, 2012&#8211;Take Up Your Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Scott Mims, Virginia Beach, VA<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 (Activity) Give each person some Play-Doh or similar material and have them create a sculpture or a symbol that represents or relates to their faith.\u00a0 After a few minutes, have everyone share their creation and what it symbolizes.\u00a0 Take note of how many people incorporate a cross in their sculpture.<\/li>\n<li>Do you think it is easy or hard to be a Christian today?\u00a0 Why?<\/li>\n<li>If you had to create a single text message that shares the gospel with someone, what would it say?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Take Up Your Cross<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2012\/09\/shutterstock_497409edit2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3821\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"shutterstock_497409edit\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2012\/09\/shutterstock_497409edit2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a>Should a person be fired for wearing a cross, especially when co-workers of other faiths are allowed to wear items symbolic of their beliefs?\u00a0 Is it appropriate for Christians to refuse to provide services to homosexual couples if doing so conflicts with their personal religious convictions?\u00a0 These are the issues underlying what some are calling \u201ca watershed moment\u201d in Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Four Christians in England, who each claim to have lost their jobs because of discrimination against their Christian beliefs, have recently been granted a hearing by the European Court of Human Rights.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-19472438\">Their case<\/a> has further fueled debate in England over how to appropriately balance the rights of people to practice their faith with the protection of the rights of others in society.\u00a0 In recent times British courts have ruled overwhelmingly against Christians, occasionally comparing their beliefs unfavorably with secular principles.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What do <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you<\/span> think it means to be a Christian?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think that being a Christian is more a matter of what you believe or how you act?<\/li>\n<li>Do you feel comfortable wearing jewelry or clothing that identifies you as a Christian?\u00a0 If not, why not?\u00a0 If so, are there places or situations where you <em>would<\/em> feel uncomfortable or that doing so would be inappropriate?<\/li>\n<li>Do you agree or disagree: our overall culture is becoming increasingly indifferent, if not openly hostile, to Christianity?\u00a0 Why?<\/li>\n<li>What limits, if any, should there be on religious expression?\u00a0 For example some religions have mandates regarding facial hair or head covering.\u00a0 Should employers be able to require a shave or a bare head?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, September 16, 2012 (16th Sunday after Pentecost)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=213426319\">Isaiah 50:4-9a<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=213426354\">James 3:1-12<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=213426386\">Mark 8:27-38<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>This particular passage is often called the fulcrum or \u201chinge\u201d of Mark\u2019s gospel account.\u00a0 Not only is it the midpoint of the book, it also marks several important turning points in the story.\u00a0 Geographically, Jesus has been working mostly in the region of Galilee, but now his ministry will lead him steadily onward to Jerusalem and the cross.\u00a0 Theologically several shifts also occur.\u00a0 Up to this point, Mark has focused on who Jesus is as shown by his words and his works of power.\u00a0 The conclusion he hopes that we, the readers of the gospel, will reach is the same one that Peter voices \u2013 Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ.\u00a0 So, from here on out the gospel will focus much more on what it <em>means<\/em> that Jesus is the Christ, and subsequently, what it means to those who call themselves Christians.\u00a0 That is to say, there is a shift at this point from the invitation to follow Jesus to what discipleship \u2013 following Jesus \u2013 truly looks like.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does discipleship look like?\u00a0 Another important feature of this passage is that it contains the first of three instances, three \u201cpassion predictions,\u201d in which Jesus foretells what lies at the end of his journey to Jerusalem (verse 31).\u00a0 Here, as in the other two instances (Mk. 9:30, 10:32-34), those closest to Jesus fail to understand what he is talking about.\u00a0 Peter rather famously pulls Jesus aside, as if Jesus is the candidate and Peter the campaign manager, and begins to rebuke Jesus for saying such things.\u00a0 Jesus just as famously puts Peter in his place.\u00a0 \u201cGet behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.\u201d\u00a0 And here is the essence of the matter, it is not the disciple\u2019s place to define what \u201cMessiah\u201d or \u201cChrist\u201d mean, for it is Jesus alone who gets to define these things.\u00a0 The disciple\u2019s place is simply to get behind Jesus, to take up her or his cross, and to follow.<\/p>\n<p>But what does it mean to take up one\u2019s cross?\u00a0 Is it simply to deal with the problems or troubles that come your way with as much patience, determination, and faith as possible?\u00a0 We often hear of \u201cbearing our cross\u201d in terms of such things.\u00a0 Yet Jesus has something else, something deeper in mind than getting through life as best as we can.\u00a0 After all, the cross that awaits Jesus in Jerusalem is not an accidental event or circumstance for him to \u201cget through,\u201d it is a direct result of his own work to confront the powers of sin, evil, and death.\u00a0 Jesus defined Messiah in terms of his identification with the outcasts, the forgotten, and the oppressed, bringing to them in word and deed the promise of God\u2019s coming kingdom.\u00a0 This has important implications for all who would follow Jesus.\u00a0 \u201cTaking up the cross means being at work where God is at work in the world to relieve suffering and injustice, to rescue the weak, and to bring peace and justice to bear in the human community.\u201d (R.
