You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>This is part of the \u201cPriestly Prayer\u201d of Jesus in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> Chapter of John.\u00a0 These four verses seem to sum up the core of the prayer of Jesus for his disciples \u2013 for Jesus\u2019 disciples today:<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><em>I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.<\/em><em><\/em><em>I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one.<\/em><em><sup>*<\/sup><\/em><em><sup>\u00a0 <\/sup><\/em><em>They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.<\/em><em><\/em><em>Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are three points worth noting:<\/p>\n<p>We are IN the world, not OF the world.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have been claimed by Christ to be those redeemed.<\/li>\n<li>We are no longer under Satan\u2019s rule (this world), but God\u2019s rule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are protected.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cLead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0The power of evil gets too little attention from today\u2019s Christian.<\/li>\n<li>From Luther\u2019s Large Catechism: \u201cIf you could see how many daggers, spears, and\u00a0 arrows are at every moment aimed at you, you would be glad to come to\u00a0 the sacrament as often as possible.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are being \u201cmade holy.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have been \u201csanctified \u2013 made holy\u201d\u00a0 from Late Latin <em>sanctific\u0101re,<\/em> from Latin <em>sanctus<\/em> holy + <em>facere<\/em> to make<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0How would you live your life today if you really believed that God was doing His work on you to \u201cmake you holy?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>What does it mean for you to be <strong><em>IN <\/em><\/strong>the world not <strong><em>OF<\/em><\/strong> the world?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Write a prayer <em>that Jesus might pray for you<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Imagine a day in your life where your sanctification was a 24 hour activity.<\/li>\n<li>Read the newspaper and find places where sanctification is required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>There is no better prayer for protection and sanctification than Psalm 141.\u00a0 In your group, slowly read the psalm together as a prayer, perhaps pausing briefly after each verse.\u00a0 As you read, think of those who are in particular need of God&#8217;s care, and pray for them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Paul Henrickson, Salem, VA &nbsp; Warm-up Questions What if Jesus prayed for you?
