Epiphany means \u201crevelation,\u201d or \u201cto make someone\/something known.\u201d\u00a0 Going back to your answers from above, what are some of the things that are revealed or made known about God in your favorite celebrations?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Revelations<\/h3>\n<p>When<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/45822292\"> Kim Jong Il<\/a>, then Supreme Leader of North Korea, died unexpectedly on December 17, 2011, his death not only made headlines but raised anxiety on the part of many across the globe. Fearful of problems associated with a power struggle in the North, or even of the nation\u2019s collapse, forces in South Korea were placed on high alert, while other nations sought to reach out through diplomatic channels.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the uncertainty was the revelation that Kim Jong Il\u2019s youngest son, Kim Jong Un, was his chosen successor.\u00a0 Little is known outside North Korea of Kim Jong Un who, in his late 20\u2019s, has been hailed by officials and the state media in North Korea with titles such as, \u201cGreat Successor, Supreme Leader and Great Leader.\u201d \u00a0Most recently, he was officially recognized as the Supreme Commander of North Korea\u2019s armed forces.\u00a0 While North Korea has called for its people to rally behind Kim Jong Un and to protect him as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/north-korea-calls-human-shields-protect-leader-081900068.html\">\u201chuman shields,\u201d<\/a> many around the world continue to deal with the uncertainty of what his age and inexperience may mean for international relations in the years to come.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0As we begin a new year, how optimistic are you about the way things are going in the world?\u00a0 How optimistic are you about the future? You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>The way in which we read or hear something can make all of the difference.\u00a0 One way to read these verses is simply as John\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2012\/01\/shutterstock_970121edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-3279\" style=\"margin: 5px 6px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2012\/01\/shutterstock_970121edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a>account of how Jesus called his first disciples.\u00a0 Yet, as a writer, John is a master at drawing in his audience through double meanings and a \u201cdeeper\u201d, more personal sense of the story.\u00a0 Such is the case in this passage as Jesus addresses not just around him, but us as well, with an invitation to life.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the first three words of this passage, \u201cThe next day,\u201d clue us in to the fact that we need to go back a bit to understand what\u2019s going on. As it turns out, this is actually the third \u201cnext day\u201d section in the opening chapter of John\u2019s gospel.\u00a0 In the first section, verses 29 \u2013 34, \u201cthe next day\u201d after John the Baptist explains his role to those sent from Jerusalem, he bears witness to Jesus as both the Lamb of God and Son of God.\u00a0 The \u201cnext day\u201d after this\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (verses 35 \u2013 43), his further testimony about Jesus leads two of his own disciples to follow after Jesus.\u00a0 Jesus, seeing them, asks, \u201cWhat are you looking for?\u201d When they stammer out, \u201cRabbi, where are you staying,\u201d Jesus invites them to \u201cCome and see.\u201d\u00a0 His invitation initiates an ever-widening circle of discipleship as one of the two, Andrew, goes to his own brother, Simon Peter, with the news, \u201cWe have found the Messiah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So it is that we come to the \u201cnext day\u201d of this week\u2019s gospel. Deciding to go to Galilee, Jesus first calls Philip.\u00a0 Philip, in turn, invites Nathanael saying, \u201cWe have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.\u201d\u00a0 Here, \u201cthe law and the prophets\u201d means the whole of the Scriptures for these Jewish believers.\u00a0 Brushing aside Nathanael\u2019s remark about the insignificance of Nazareth, Philip offers once again the invitation, \u201cCome and see.\u201d\u00a0 Nathanael does, and his own encounter with Jesus, and Jesus\u2019 ability to \u201cknow\u201d and \u201csee\u201d him from afar, not only leads Nathanael to believe in Jesus, it also draws forth a confession of faith: \u201cRabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!\u201d\u00a0 Jesus assures him that greater things are yet to come. \u2018Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So, as the first chapter of his gospel ends, John leaves us with Jesus heading towards Galilee with a growing group of followers.\u00a0 Yet, there is a deeper way to hear this passage.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 very first words in John\u2019s gospel, \u201cWhat are you looking for?\u201d are a question to us, as well.\u00a0 When it comes to life\u2026when it comes to faith, what <em>are<\/em> we looking for?\u00a0 Deep down in our bones, what is it that we really need?\u00a0 In these three \u201cnext days,\u201d we hear Jesus being called many things.\u00a0 John the Baptist calls him \u201cthe Lamb of God who takes away the world\u2019s sin\u201d and \u201cSon of God.\u201d\u00a0 Andrew calls him, \u201cRabbi\u201d and \u201cMessiah.\u201d\u00a0 Philip says Jesus is the one, \u201cabout whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote.\u201d\u00a0 Nathanael adds that Jesus is, \u201cthe King of Israel.\u201d\u00a0 Is Jesus what we are looking for?\u00a0 Is he the one that we really need?\u00a0 The invitation that John offers to us through the rest of his gospel account, and indeed through our own experience of living as followers of Jesus, is simply to \u201cCome and see.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you think this particular gospel reading was chosen for today?\u00a0 In what ways is Jesus being revealed and by whom?<\/li>\n<li>When it comes to the titles and names given to Jesus in John 1:29-51, (Lamb of God, Messiah, Son of God, Rabbi, King of Israel, Son of Man) which one is most important or most meaningful to you?\u00a0 Why?<\/li>\n<li>If you had been Philip and Jesus had just walked up to you and said, \u201cFollow me,\u201d would you have gone?\u00a0 If so, why?\u00a0 If not, then what further information would you have needed?\u00a0 What else would you have wanted to know before making such a commitment?\u00a0 Do you think we have this information now?<\/li>\n<li>What does it look like to <em>you<\/em> to follow Jesus?\u00a0 Is following Jesus different from believing in him?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>Nathanael came to Jesus because Philip invited him to \u201ccome and see.\u201d\u00a0 What do you think would be the best way to invite a friend of yours to \u201ccome and see\u201d Jesus today?\u00a0 What are some approaches that might not work so well with your friends or in your setting?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As an opening activity, you might try a Trust Walk experience.\u00a0 One variation is to have a single leader and the rest of the group blind folded; another variation is to break the group up into partners who take turns being the guide\/ blind folded.\u00a0 Groups with a single leader might have everyone place their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them, or hold on with one hand to a large rope that connects the whole group.\u00a0 The goal for the leader(s) is to guide those who follow <strong><em>safely<\/em><\/strong> along a route.\u00a0 The goal for those who are blind folded is to experience what it is like to trust others as they follow.\u00a0 Debrief:\u00a0 What was the experience like for you?\u00a0 Is it easy or difficult for you to trust someone else to guide you?\u00a0 How is having \u201cfaith\u201d like a \u201cTrust Walk?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Going Deeper: For further discussion on the sheer grace of being called to follow Jesus, watch Rob Bell\u2019s short video, <em>Dust <\/em>(Nooma series).\u00a0 Though not specifically about this passage, he presents a great take on what being called to \u201cFollow me,\u201d by a rabbi meant in Jesus\u2019 day, and how Jesus\u2019 invitation to Andrew, Peter, James, John, Philip, Nathanael and the rest would have been most unusual.\u00a0 Talk together about what it means that Jesus calls <em>us<\/em> to be his followers.\u00a0 What does it mean to you that Jesus believes in <em>you<\/em>?\u00a0 Does this change the way you see yourself as a disciple?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Reaching Out: As a group, explore ways to invite your friends to \u201ccome and see\u201d Jesus.\u00a0 How would you go about it?\u00a0 Would you hold an event of some sort?\u00a0 Would you invite them to a service project? A retreat?\u00a0 A play or music festival?\u00a0 A coffeehouse?\u00a0 A specially designed worship service?\u00a0 What activities are you already doing that are, or could be, great places for friends to experience God\u2019s love and grace? How might you use social media or other modern means to invite folks?\u00a0 What \u201cbarriers\u201d might need to be overcome?
