{"id":3117,"date":"2011-12-06T07:50:43","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T12:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=3117"},"modified":"2011-12-09T16:30:24","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T21:30:24","slug":"december-11-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/december-11-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"December 11, 2011&#8211;We Will Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Jay Gamelin, Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Lexington, SC<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What do you hope to do with the rest of your day today?\u00a0 What are you hoping to get or give for Christmas this year?\u00a0 Do you already have some New Year\u2019s resolutions planned for 2012?\u00a0 What might those be?<\/p>\n<h3>We Will Live<\/h3>\n<p>The best part of Christmas isn\u2019t the day itself but the preparation for December 25.\u00a0 A part of the Christmas season is seeing the decorations go up in the mall and on your neighbor\u2019s gutters.\u00a0 It is putting together the schedule of Christmas parties and worship services.\u00a0 Preparing for Christmas means it is time to pull out the manger scene and the artificial tree and grumble about the time it takes to set up.<\/p>\n<p>But of all the preparations perhaps the most fun is the creation of the Christmas wish list.\u00a0 Once a year young folks (and some<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/12\/shutterstock_84024064edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3137\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/12\/shutterstock_84024064edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a> older ones as well) get a chance to dream about what may land beneath that tree and hope for the best.\u00a0 It is an art of dreaming and then ordering the list in such a way that what you really, really want comes out on top.\u00a0 In the past they may have dreamed of sugar plums.\u00a0 Today it is Xbox games.<\/p>\n<p>For some adults the list of hoped-for gifts can be expensive and, worse, what can be purchased may never be used.\u00a0 In this article on thestreet.com (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/11230328\/1\/5-things-you-spend-on-then-never-use.html\">http:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/11230328\/1\/5-things-you-spend-on-then-never-use.html<\/a>) a list of the most expensive gifts you never use includes items such as swimming pools and outdoor grills.<\/p>\n<p>When we plan what we want for Christmas, we are often thinking of the life we will have when we have this \u201cthing\u201d.\u00a0 We imagine spending time by the pool or cooking off the grill or treating ourselves to an afternoon espresso.\u00a0 When push comes to shove, we may end up getting what we want, but discover the life that comes with it is not exactly what we thought it would be.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What are you hoping for Christmas this year?\u00a0 What do you think \u201clife\u201d will become when you have what you want?<\/li>\n<li>Think about a gift you want this Christmas.\u00a0 What does this gift say about you?\u00a0 What does it say about what is important about you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, December\u00a0 11, 2011 (Third Sunday of Advent)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=189603881\">Isaiah 61:1-4<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=189603915\">1 Thessalonians 5:16-24<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=189603943\">John 1:6-8, 19-28<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>There was a lot of hope surrounding John.\u00a0 Clearly he was leading quite a revival movement among the people of Israel.\u00a0 In John they heard words that reminded them of a greater story.\u00a0 They thought of Elijah, a prophet who would usher in the messiah.\u00a0 They wondered if he were a prophet. They had not heard a prophet in more than 400 years!\u00a0 They even hoped that perhaps he might be the messiah.<\/p>\n<p>John denied it all.\u00a0 When asked who he was John pointed, not to his own life and witness, but to the one who would come after him.\u00a0 John pointed to the one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit\u2019s fire.\u00a0 He knew what he wanted was not for him but for those who came after him.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps John could have been a greater prophet and more of his words would be remembered. John was careful to point people to a bigger, better gift to come.\u00a0 People may have thought that what they wanted was John, but John knew the better gift was coming.\u00a0 It would be a gift that would truly change the world.<\/p>\n<p>Like the people who came to see John we often think we know what we want.\u00a0 We dream and hope for the life we want. We\u00a0 settle for the lesser and do not realize the greater thing that is beyond the gift we want.\u00a0 We want a pool but even more we want the community that gathers around the cool relief on a hot day.\u00a0 We may want the wine cellar but what we really want are the people who gather for a glass and conversation.\u00a0 We think we want an exercise machine but our real desire is to feel good, feel beautiful, and to be appreciated.\u00a0 The thing is often not the thing we want!\u00a0 We long for something beyond \u201cstuff,\u201d something much more beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>As you prepare for the season be sure to look beyond the garland and tinsel, the music and the sweets, and the gifts and cards.\u00a0 Instead, see that which is coming.\u00a0 A true gift is on its way.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever gotten a gift you really wanted but then were disappointed?\u00a0 How were you let down?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever been in a situation that felt rotten at the time but came out the other side in a better place? Share this time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<p>All I want for Christmas.
