Why Aren\u2019t We Gasping (or Laughing)?<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>I am writing this on November 22, 2011.\u00a0 Like everyone over the age of 54, I remember exactly where I was at 1:30 pm 48 years ago.\u00a0 The assassination of President Kennedy is etched in my memory.\u00a0 When I watch this YouTube video, I still gasp at the harsh reality.\u00a0 http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cP-YKYBfLuU<\/a><\/p>\n

What makes you gasp today?\u00a0 What event, idea, or proposal takes your breath away?\u00a0 I am not a social-psychologist, but I have a hunch that, because we have instant access to so many events, there are fewer things that truly amaze us.\u00a0 We may be entertained or even embarrassed, but are we left breathless with the surprise of real life?<\/p>\n

Mark 1:1 is an incomplete sentence that simply blurts out a truth that is breathlessly remarkable: \u201cThe beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Listen!\u00a0 Good News, Jesus, the Christ, Son of God<\/em>; these words are like a prelude that we need a few moments to digest.<\/p>\n

What might come next?\u00a0 Are we prepared for an Old Testament reference, a \u201cWilderness Man\u201d preaching a baptism of repentance, a promise of one even more powerful yet to come?\u00a0 Compare this story with the accounts in Matthew and Luke and you will find that Mark gives the polite version of events.\u00a0 In Mark there is no \u201cbrood of vipers,\u201d no clearing of the threshing floor; no burning of chaff with unquenchable fire.\u00a0 It is straight forward proclamation of the Good News.\u00a0 Are you gasping yet?\u00a0 Do we need disastrous consequences or is the simple declaration of Mark sufficient.<\/p>\n

Below are 6 \u201cP\u201d words to help you work through this text.\u00a0 Once you are finished, try telling the story to another person in your group with amazed excitement.<\/p>\n

Prelude<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.<\/p>\n

+ begin a conversation with these words of verse 1, what would you say next?<\/p>\n

Preparation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

2 As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,
\n\u2018See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
\nwho will prepare your way;
\n3 the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
\n\u201cPrepare the way of the Lord,
\nmake his paths straight\u201d \u2019,<\/p>\n

+ why is the voice crying in the wilderness?<\/p>\n

+ what wilderness of the spirit do you know?<\/p>\n

Proclamation<\/span><\/strong>
\n4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.<\/p>\n

+ Again, Baptism takes place in the wilderness.\u00a0 Why?<\/p>\n

People<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.<\/p>\n

+ Can you imagine \u201call\u201d the people of a city showing up for baptism?<\/p>\n

+ What people might show up today?<\/p>\n

Preposterous<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

6Now John was clothed with camel\u2019s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.<\/p>\n

+ John is truly a \u201cWilderness Man.\u201d\u00a0 Why is that important?<\/p>\n

Powerful<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

7He proclaimed, \u2018The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.\u2019<\/p>\n

+ How would you share with another person, the power of your baptism?<\/p>\n

Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n

Role Play the situation in the text.\u00a0 Assign persons to be John, some hearers, persons who are offended by him–and a news crew covering the event.\u00a0 Have the crew interview folks to get their reaction.\u00a0 Pay special attention to what would be “newsworthy.”\u00a0 What would excite people and get them talking?<\/p>\n
