In the rain? In Iowa? When the weather is only 30 degrees?<\/p>\n<h3>Sleeping Under the Stars So Kids Can Reach Them<\/h3>\n<p>This past October 29<sup>th<\/sup> nearly 1,000 Iowans abandoned their warm beds and homes.\u00a0 They left their dinners and Halloween parties to head to Drake University\u2019s outdoor stadium to sleep in cardboard boxes or on the ground.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/11\/shutterstock_9277006edit1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3066\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/11\/shutterstock_9277006edit1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a> Does it sound like a crazy thing to do?\u00a0 Especially when the temperature neared 30 degrees and it began to rain.\u00a0 Reggie\u2019s Sleepout (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reggiessleepout.org\">www.reggiessleepout.org<\/a>) began in 2001, after Reggie Kelsey died in the Des Moines River, three and a half months after he aged out of the foster care system.\u00a0 During those months Reggie (who suffered disabilities) battled homelessness, stayed in shelters, and slept outside.\u00a0 He was ill-equipped to live on his own.\u00a0 After his tragic death, Des Moines took a hard look at itself and how it handled its over 3,000 homeless youth.\u00a0 Reggie\u2019s Sleepout was developed.\u00a0 It\u2019s not only a fundraiser for the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers but an awareness project for the community.\u00a0 Participants spend one evening in the cold, raising awareness, learning, and listening to stories of youth who depend on shelters for survival in the cold Midwest.<\/p>\n<p>When Mackenzie Devoto, a participant at Reggie\u2019s Sleepout, was asked about why she chose to spend the night in a box she replied, \u201cHelping others is part of who I am.\u00a0 Learning about homelessness and the people it affects reminds me how lucky I am and also reminds me that because I\u2019m so lucky I get to help them also.\u201d After sleeping in the cold, participants reflect on how long the night feels when you have so little and how exhausted they are after just trying to stay warm.\u00a0 It causes them to ask questions like, \u201cWhat would it be like if I had to do this every day?\u201d and \u201cHow would I be able function at work or get an education if I weren\u2019t able to get a warm, soft night\u2019s sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Have you ever spent a night in the cold?\u00a0 How did you feel the next morning?<\/li>\n<li>What awareness projects are there in your community for youth homelessness?<\/li>\n<li>How would you respond to Reggie Kelsey\u2019s death?<\/li>\n<li>At 18 years old would you be able to survive in the \u201creal world\u201d?\u00a0 What resources would you use?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, November 20, 2011 (Christ the King Sunday)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=187856633\">\u00a0Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=187856663\">Ephesians 1:15-23<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=187856696\">Matthew 25:31-46<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. The king separates the sheep from the goats.\u00a0 He tells the sheep that they will \u201cinherit the kingdom prepared for them from the foundation of the world.\u201d\u00a0 He tells them that they clothed him, fed him, visited him, took care of him, gave him something to drink, and welcomed him.\u00a0 The \u201csheep\u201d are surprised and ask when they did this; surely they would have remembered serving the king.\u00a0 The king responds that when they do it to anyone they do it to him. For the people who are the sheep, serving seems to be woven into the very fabric of who they are.\u00a0 They serve others because they can and because they understand the importance and humanity in the service.\u00a0 The giving is a reflection of their character.<\/p>\n<p>At Reggie\u2019s Sleepout the participants slept outside to better serve and understand homeless youth in their community.\u00a0 They spent time, energy, and resources to provide clothing, food, visitation, welcoming, and safety for the teens.\u00a0 They responded not only to learn, but to experience what it was like to be homeless; to walk in their shoes, if only for one evening.\u00a0 There are many reasons why people from Des Moines participated in Reggie\u2019s Sleepout, but for many of them it was a reflection of who they are and how they desire to help make the world a better place for others.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0How does your group or congregation live out their faith without even knowing it?<\/li>\n<li>What are some things that you do to help others?<\/li>\n<li>Who are some people who are under-served in your community?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Brainstorm ideas for your group to clothe, feed, visit, care for, or welcome someone in your community.\u00a0 Implement that idea.<\/li>\n<li>Host your own &#8220;Homeless Night Out.&#8221; Start by visiting a homeless shelter in your area, discover what their needs are and learn about the people they serve.\u00a0 If you get the chance, visit with the homeless that use that shelter, get to know their stories.\u00a0 Next develop your plan for your &#8220;Homeless Night Out.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Listen to Ben Harper\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LR8n-avQ5dg\">\u201cPicture of Jesus\u201d<\/a> while looking at pictures of people in your community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Dear Lord Jesus, Thank you for blessing us with this time together.\u00a0 Open our hearts to your scriptures and our eyes to your people in need around us.
