{"id":2487,"date":"2011-03-29T07:26:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-29T12:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=2487"},"modified":"2011-03-18T08:13:29","modified_gmt":"2011-03-18T13:13:29","slug":"march-30-april-5-2011-hope-and-modern-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/march-30-april-5-2011-hope-and-modern-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"March 30-April 5, 2011&#8211;Hope and Modern Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Contributed by Jay Gamelin, pastor to Jacob\u2019s Porch, a Lutheran Campus mission to The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What is the sickest you have ever been?\u00a0 What did it take to get better?\u00a0 If you are still feeling the effects of illness or injury, what are the steps you are taking to improve your health?<\/p>\n<h3>Hope and Modern Medicine<\/h3>\n<p>There is a correlation between an optimistic patient and the likelihood of improved health say researchers at Duke  University.\u00a0 Gathering data from several<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/03\/shutterstock_63935509edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2510\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/03\/shutterstock_63935509edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a> thousand patients undergoing cardiac diagnostic testing, they found that patients with a positive outlook for the coming 15 years were half as likely to die from heart disease as the most pessimistic patients.\u00a0 Even after removing data from the most affected and depressed patients, a positive outlook still remained as a large factor in the continued health of the patients\u2014for many as much as the medication they took to treat heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>This research suggests that creating hopeful expectations for patients, even what may seem like unrealistic hope, can have a profound impact on the health of patients.\u00a0 The study highlights the growing understanding of how a person\u2019s health is not simply an equation to solve with medicine and surgery but also something impacted by mysterious forces that stem from emotional and spiritual well-being.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it takes more than medicine to provide the best care.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you believe the study?\u00a0 Do you think a positive attitude and hopeful outlook improve health?\u00a0 Why or why not?\u00a0 What evidence do you have of this in your own or in another\u2019s life?<\/li>\n<li>How do you think a positive outlook affects your everyday life?<\/li>\n<li>What would change for you tomorrow if a miraculous event happened in your life?\u00a0 How might you see the world differently if you had a tremendous amount of hope?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, April 3, 2011 (Fourth Sunday in Lent)<\/h3>\n<p><p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=167392423\">1 Samuel 16:1-13<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=167392456\">Ephesians 5:8-14<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=167392491\">John 9:1-41<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>The impossible is just that- not possible.\u00a0 We are taught that there are immutable laws in the universe that define and govern the way we interact.\u00a0 Following in the steps of Newton, Einstein, and Curie, \u00a0scientists are still working hard to discover the rules of the universe so that we can better understand how we interact with the world.<\/p>\n<p>So what do we do when we encounter something that goes against these laws?\u00a0 In today\u2019s text we see four ways to reflect on outrageous hope.\u00a0 The man born blind is confronted first by the disciples. \u00a0They assume that the man\u2019s condition is a result of sin.\u00a0 Next, after the man is healed, the neighbors assume that the healed man must not be the man born blind but someone else.\u00a0 Third, when he is brought to the priests they assume that there is foul play involved and wish to focus on condemning the method by which the man is given vision.\u00a0 All three of these find some fault, some way to explain the problem so that it makes sense in their understanding of the universe.\u00a0 For them the man being blind then given vision is a problem not a solution.<\/p>\n<p>Last is the man himself.\u00a0 When asked he answers with sublime simplicity: &#8220;I do not know whether (Jesus) is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.&#8221;(9:25)\u00a0\u00a0 The man does not try to answer why he can see, he simply states the obvious, he can see.<\/p>\n<p>When we encounter the unbelievable hope we have in Jesus it is so easy to try and explain it, to make sense of it, to try and reason why Jesus is or perhaps is not who we say Jesus is.\u00a0 But one thing is true.\u00a0 A man was blind.\u00a0 Many, many women and men witnessed this.\u00a0 Jesus healed this man and he could see.\u00a0 Many, many women and men witnessed this and even died defending what they saw.\u00a0 Even his parents!\u00a0 This is what we know: it really and truly happened.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps when we try to explain everything we just make it complicated.\u00a0 Perhaps living in hope and faith is not knowing and explaining but simply stating \u201cI do not know how.\u00a0 One thing I do know: He was dead and now he is risen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>May we have hope.<\/p>\n<h4>Quotables<\/h4>\n<p><em>Faith is, at one and the same time, absolutely necessary and altogether impossible<\/em>&#8211;Stanislaw Lem<\/p>\n<p><em>Sometimes I\u2019ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast&#8211;<\/em> Lewis Carroll<\/p>\n<p><em>Things are only impossible until they are not<\/em>&#8211;Jean-Luc Picard<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What makes it difficult to believe impossible things?<\/li>\n<li>What is the difference between believing and knowing?<\/li>\n<li>What is the difference between us and the disciples?\u00a0 How do we come to trust what others have seen?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<p>Faith Box:\u00a0 Have a box in the room.\u00a0 Put something that may seem improbable in the box.\u00a0 Perhaps have a picture of Mount Rushmore and stick it in.\u00a0 Or write 10 tons of rocks on a sheet of paper.\u00a0 Tell the youth that Mount Rushmore or 10 tons of rocks is in the box.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do they believe you or not?\u00a0 If they do, why?\u00a0 If not, why not?<\/li>\n<li>What is one thing you believe but have no proof?\u00a0 (Life in outer space perhaps?\u00a0 Or the Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch, whatever)\u00a0 What causes you to believe this?<\/li>\n<li>What we believe is often determined by the trust we put in the person making an impossible claim.\u00a0 Who told you about this impossible thing?\u00a0 Do the students trust this teacher?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>The thing in the box: do the students believe what you put in there?\u00a0 Do they trust your witness?<\/li>\n<li>What does this say about whether or not we trust the disciples?\u00a0 What do we trust about the teachings we have learned?\u00a0 What makes it hard to trust?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(DON\u2019T SHOW THEM WHAT WAS IN THERE.\u00a0 MAKE THEM LEAVE WITHOUT GETTING THE PROOF THEY DESIRE)<\/p>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Jesus, you really died.\u00a0 You really rose.\u00a0 Help us to trust those who have told us this impossible thing.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Contributed by Jay Gamelin, pastor to Jacob\u2019s Porch, a Lutheran Campus mission to The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH.
