{"id":2292,"date":"2011-02-01T07:52:30","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T12:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=2292"},"modified":"2011-01-23T21:55:18","modified_gmt":"2011-01-24T02:55:18","slug":"february-2-8-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/february-2-8-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"February 2-8-2011&#8211;The Souper Bowl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Kelly Derrick, St Philip Lutheran Church, Roanoke, VA<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>Are you going to watch the Super Bowl?<\/p>\n<h3>The Souper Bowl<\/h3>\n<p>On Sunday, February 6<sup>th<\/sup>, millions of Americans will watch the Super Bowl, the NFL\u2019s final showdown between the <em>Steelers<\/em> and the\u00a0<em>Packers<\/em>. \u00a0 Also on this same Sunday, thousands of young people in America will participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/02\/shutterstock_61747570web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2328\" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/02\/shutterstock_61747570web-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/02\/shutterstock_61747570web-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2011\/02\/shutterstock_61747570web.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/souperbowl.org\/\">Souper Bowl of Caring<\/a> began in 1990 in Columbia, SC, as a ministry of 22 congregations seeking to answer this simple question: \u201cWhy not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for the needy?\u201d\u00a0 The movement is now the nation\u2019s largest celebration of giving and serving.\u00a0 Young people are the primary leaders of this food drive\/service blitz movement.\u00a0 Groups are encouraged to collect both donations of cans of food (really any non-perishable food will do!) as well as monetary donations.\u00a0 Most often, the money is collected in soup pots (makes sense, huh?).\u00a0 All of the food and all of the money collected is kept within the local community.\u00a0 Each group decides to whom the food and money will go.\u00a0 Each group also reports the totals of their collection to the Souper Bowl of Caring so that a national total of food and money is tallied.<\/p>\n<p>Along with collecting food and funds for hunger agencies in their own area, groups are encouraged to participate in a Service Blitz.\u00a0 The reasons for doing a Service Blitz are, in part, because it \u201chelps youth connect the contents of their soup pots to the individuals directly benefiting from the dollar and can donations and gives youth exposure to poverty, hunger, homelessness, and injustice in their own community.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring?\u00a0 If so, what did you do? What was it like?\u00a0 How did it make you feel?<\/li>\n<li>What is your congregation doing to respond to hunger in your community? Around the world?<\/li>\n<li>The Souper Bowl of Caring believes that young people have the ability to serve and should be given opportunities to lead their communities in helping others.\u00a0 How has God gifted you to lead?\u00a0 Does your congregation empower you to serve and to lead?<\/li>\n<li>The Souper Bowl of Caring also believes that hunger and poverty have a negative impact on individuals and the communities in which they live.\u00a0 Do you think that hunger and poverty actually <em>do<\/em> have a negative impact on your community? Be light? Huh? Over the years, many people (including some scholars) have been confused by these words from Jesus.\u00a0 How are we to be salt and light?\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00a0 Maybe it has something to do with the good works Jesus mentions?<\/p>\n<p>This passage from Matthew is part of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).\u00a0 To really oversimplify, the Sermon on the Mount is Jesus\u2019 instructions for those who follow him \u2013 what to believe and, much more important, what to <strong><em>do<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Following Jesus requires a response from us!\u00a0 Jesus has certain expectations for how his followers will act.\u00a0 Faith is not just about belief; faith is about <strong><em>action<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 So, what is it that we are supposed to <strong><em>do<\/em><\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Jesus says that we should do good works and that our righteousness should exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees.\u00a0 So what does Jesus mean by <em>righteousness<\/em>?\u00a0 God\u2019s righteousness is about covenant: God keeping the promises God has made to the people, most important God\u2019s promise to save the people.\u00a0 God\u2019s righteousness is about God\u2019s action on behalf of God\u2019s people \u2013 saving, freeing, helping, assisting, raising up.\u00a0 Most often God\u2019s actions were on behalf of the poor and needy.\u00a0 As God\u2019s people, our righteousness should be like God\u2019s righteousness.\u00a0 When Jesus says we should act in righteousness, he means that we should act as God acts.\u00a0 Like God, we should be concerned about \u2013 and <strong><em>act <\/em><\/strong>on behalf of \u2013 those who are poor and needy.\u00a0 Righteousness is doing justice for the poor, the helpless, the oppressed, the widow, the orphan, and the resident alien \u2013 all of those who are the least, last, lost, littlest, and lifeless within the community.<\/p>\n<p>So, how do we <strong><em>act<\/em><\/strong> in a righteous way?\u00a0 I think the words for today from Isaiah give us some hints.\u00a0 The prophet says that God wants us to worship in this way: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the homeless poor into your house, to cover the naked and not to hide yourself from your own kin.\u00a0 Look at all those verbs; that\u2019s lots of <strong><em>action<\/em><\/strong>!\u00a0 Then, Isaiah says, your light shall break forth like the dawn!\u00a0 Sounds a lot like being light to me!<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What do <strong><em>you<\/em><\/strong> think Jesus means by being salt and being light?<\/li>\n<li>At the end of the Lutheran baptism service, the pastor often says this from Matthew 5:16: \u201clet your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.\u201d\u00a0 What does baptism have to do with doing good works?<\/li>\n<li>What do <strong><em>you<\/em><\/strong> think Jesus wants us to do?<\/li>\n<li>What does the Souper Bowl of Caring have to do with doing righteousness? With letting your light shine before others so they can see your good works and glorify God?<\/li>\n<li>The Souper Bowl of Caring believes that there is joy in serving?\u00a0 Do you feel joy when you serve?\u00a0 Should this be our motivation for helping people who live in poverty and hunger?\u00a0 Are there others reasons that we should help people who are in need (hint: does God have anything to do with it!?!)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider watching the <a href=\"http:\/\/souperbowl.org\/\/resources\/view\/?file_id=136\">Hunger Education video<\/a> that is part of the Souper Bowl of Caring or taking the <a href=\"http:\/\/souperbowl.org\/\/multimedia\/resources\/hunger_quiz__39.pdf\">Hunger Quiz<\/a>.
