{"id":2236,"date":"2011-01-04T07:07:46","date_gmt":"2011-01-04T12:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=2236"},"modified":"2010-12-31T12:08:49","modified_gmt":"2010-12-31T17:08:49","slug":"january-5-11-2011-we-will-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/january-5-11-2011-we-will-live\/","title":{"rendered":"January 5-11, 2011&#8211;We Will Live!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Jay Gamelin, pastor at Jacob\u2019s Porch, a Lutheran campus mission to The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What are some rituals you do every day when you first get up; is there anything special you may do?\u00a0 Is there something you do every night before going to sleep?\u00a0 Where do these rituals come from?<\/p>\n<h3>We Shall Live!<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_2242\" style=\"width: 279px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/haiti-earthquake.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2242\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2242 \" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/haiti-earthquake.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Carol Guzy\/Washington Post<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When the two women were trapped under the rubble, all was darkness.\u00a0 The earthquake had flattened their university classroom in Haiti and the five floors above them were now on top of them.\u00a0 Only the light of one cell phone showed the situation.\u00a0 One woman had her leg trapped; the other had just a small pocket of space amid the rubble in which to move.\u00a0 The two women had shared a class and knew each other\u2019s name.\u00a0 They became more than friends.\u00a0 They were companions through a terrible ordeal.<\/p>\n<p>For six days they took turns yelling for help.\u00a0 When they heard voices they knew it was day.\u00a0 When the voices were gone they assumed it must be night.\u00a0 They had nothing to drink and just a few crumbs from a cookie to eat.\u00a0 But the two prayed, sang hymns, talked about boys, and rested when they could.<\/p>\n<p>After six days, one woman said to the other, \u201cWe are not going to live.\u201d\u00a0 The other encouraged her to hang on and have hope.\u00a0 She began talking about their life ahead.\u00a0 She spoke of the conversations they would have in a year, remembering this time together.\u00a0 Suddenly, the world changed.\u00a0 Light poured in and they were pulled out.\u00a0 Malnourished, feeble&#8211;but alive, they separated on the way to health stations, hoping to see one another again.<\/p>\n<p>One year later, the women talk and reminisce about the horrific time in that small hole in the rubble.\u00a0 One woman is missing her leg; the other says she has nightmares.\u00a0 But they laugh when they meet. This Jesus, who has done nothing but live righteously, comes to be baptized, to be \u201cforgiven\u201d of sins.\u00a0 Clearly John sees this is not the way it should be and tries to stop the event.\u00a0 But Jesus knows something about this holy moment.\u00a0 Jesus knows that he is pointing the world to a whole new reality.\u00a0 Jesus is becoming a model for what the rest of us are to do and be.<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus was baptized, he did this to \u201cfulfill all righteousness.\u201d\u00a0 Typically this means to be righteous under the law.\u00a0 Jesus is following a \u201crule of faith\u201d as a way of showing the rest of us what we are to do.\u00a0 As Jesus comes up from the water, a voice declares that he is righteous and beloved, a source of pleasure for the speaker.\u00a0 Jesus is made righteous.\u00a0 The law is no longer the rule but is fulfilled in baptism.<\/p>\n<p>Often we think this is a voice for Jesus alone, but it expresses as much what God thinks of us as what God thinks of Jesus.\u00a0 When we are baptized, God is well pleased.\u00a0 This is done to forgive sins, to be sure, but it makes us family.\u00a0 We are made righteous.\u00a0 We are brought from death to life, just as Jesus was brought from death to life.\u00a0 Baptism binds us to God as Jesus was bound to God.\u00a0 It shows us that Jesus\u2019 path of suffering and hope is our path also.\u00a0 Jesus becomes our companion in this journey, as do all who are baptized into God\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>The two women in Haiti were baptized by shared suffering into a relationship they had not expected, but it was being bound to one another that brought hope and life.\u00a0 They lived together through the dark and found one another in the light.\u00a0 Our baptism is about having a companion in our own darkness and knowing that light is coming.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the darkest place you have ever been?\u00a0 What was it like in the darkness?<\/li>\n<li>Were you afraid of the dark as a child?\u00a0 What did you do when you were afraid?\u00a0 How did this help?<\/li>\n<li>Think of a dark time in your life.\u00a0 Who was there to be beside you?\u00a0 Who was a person that helped bring light to you when you felt the darkness?<\/li>\n<li>How was this person Jesus for you?\u00a0 What did this person\u2019s actions tell you about how Jesus is at work in, through, and for you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestion<\/h3>\n<h5>\u201cThough I walk in darkness&#8230;\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>Materials:\u00a0 Bandanas, cloth, or other way to make blindfolds for half the group.<\/p>\n<p>Break the group into pairs.\u00a0 Have each person in the pair take a turn being blindfolded and led by their partner. Explain to the group to take this exercise very seriously.\u00a0 You are to be trusted.\u00a0 Give the group a destination, perhaps to the sanctuary or other place that they must negotiate their way.\u00a0 Then the other person is led back to where you began.\u00a0 You can provide obstacles, or direct them to a tricky route to make the event more or less difficult as desired.<\/p>\n<p>Process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did you trust your partner?\u00a0 Why or why not?\u00a0 Were you surprised by anything they did or didn\u2019t do?<\/li>\n<li>What was helpful about having a partner?\u00a0 How would this activity be different if you did not have a partner?<\/li>\n<li>Name some folks in your church who you think are a role model of faith. \u00a0What is it about their walk that you admire?\u00a0 How are they helping you in your walk?\u00a0 What ways do they help \u201cenlighten\u201d (i.e. teach, show, help, provide an example) you when you feel like you are in the \u201cdark?\u201d (confused, not understanding, or being plain ole\u2019 selfish)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>God, we are your beloved and with us you are pleased.\u00a0 Thank you for all you give us to help us in our journey, especially the people who join us in baptism to be your children.\u00a0 Thank you for our role model, Jesus, who shows us the way.\u00a0 Thank you for the role models in our friends and church members who lighten the path.\u00a0 Hear us lift these role models up to you, aloud and in our hearts&#8230;.
