{"id":2221,"date":"2010-12-28T07:41:25","date_gmt":"2010-12-28T12:41:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=2221"},"modified":"2011-01-12T14:39:33","modified_gmt":"2011-01-12T19:39:33","slug":"december-29-january-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/december-29-january-4\/","title":{"rendered":"December 29-January 4&#8211;Happy New Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Paul Henrickson,\u00a0 Chaplain, Roanoke College;\u00a0 Salem, VA<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>Was 2010 a happy year for you?\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 What do you think makes for happiness?<\/p>\n<h3>Happy New Year<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/fireworks_1781829b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2232\" style=\"margin: 3px 5px;border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/fireworks_1781829b-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/fireworks_1781829b-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/fireworks_1781829b.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Happy New Year! \u00a0(With great emphasis on <strong>HAPPY<\/strong>!)\u00a0 It\u2019s time to make those New Year\u2019s resolutions \u2013 you know those promises you make to yourself and then wiggle out of them by Valentine\u2019s Day.\u00a0 Let\u2019s see, what will make me \u201chappy\u201d in 2011?\u00a0 In 2011 I am going to lose 20 pounds; I am going to quit smoking; I am going to take more time for my family; I am going to read one good book each month \u2026 We make New Year\u2019s Resolutions because we imagine that we can live happier in the future than we did in the past. \u00a0If I ask my students what they want in their life, they always say \u201cI want to be happy.\u201d\u00a0 After all, we have it written in the Declaration of Independence that we have the right to the \u201c\u2026 pursuit of happiness.\u201d\u00a0 So let\u2019s all resolve to be happy in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Gilbert is a Psychology professor at Harvard \u2013 he studies \u201chappiness.\u201d In 2003 he wrote an article for the New York Times entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/09\/07\/magazine\/the-futile-pursuit-of-happiness.html?src=pm\">The Futile Pursuit of Happiness<\/a>.\u201d In this article he argues that we can\u2019t \u201cpursue\u201d happiness because we really don\u2019t know what will make us happy.\u00a0 He emphasizes that there is a gap between what we predict will make us happy and what we ultimately experience.\u00a0 Gilbert calls this gap the \u201cimpact bias.\u201d He says that we consistently over estimate what will make us happy; i.e. planning for a vacation anticipates more happiness than actually going on the vacation.\u00a0 Gilbert writes that impact bias \u201c\u2026characterizes how we experience the dimming excitement over not just a BMW but also over any object or event that we presume will make us happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026 \u201cHappy New Year!\u201d (with Happy being an elusive goal.)<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What are your resolutions for 2011?<\/li>\n<li>If \u201chappiness\u201d is your goal, what kind of grade do you give your life so far?<\/li>\n<li>Why do you think we experience &#8220;impact bias,&#8221;\u00a0 the gap between what we think will make us happy and what we actually experience?\u00a0 What might we do to lessen the gap?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, January 2, 2011 (Second Sunday of Christmas)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=160034909\">Jeremiah 31:7-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=160034949\">Ephesians 1:3-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=160034993\">John 1:[1-9] 10-18<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>If I ever have the opportunity to teach conformation class again, I will require the students to memorize John 1:1-18; this is the pure Gospel.\u00a0 It is, in a sense, our own \u201cDeclaration of Independence\u201d from the bondage of sin and it is the foundation for the life of a Christian.\u00a0 Listen to these phrases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In      the beginning was the Word<\/li>\n<li>the      Word became flesh<\/li>\n<li>the      light shines in the darkness<\/li>\n<li>power      to become the children of God<\/li>\n<li>we      have all received grace upon grace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the Gospel of the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>This is not about being happy; it is about joy. It is about having the abundant life that comes, not because of our clever planning, but as a gift from God.\u00a0 We are required to do nothing but accept the gift and make it the foundation of our lives of faith.<\/p>\n<p>Resolve to live your life in the gift of grace.<\/p>\n<p>Resolve to repeat these 18 verses once a day.<\/p>\n<p>Resolve to surrender, not to pleasure, but to joy.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the difference between happiness and joy?\u00a0 Is it possible to be joyful without being happy?<\/li>\n<li>John 1:1-18 is one of the great passages of scripture.\u00a0 If you could only share one other text from the Bible with another person, what would it be?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>John&#8217;s prologue emphasizes that God&#8217;s love is not merely an abstraction,  but has become touchable in a person.\u00a0 Share a time when the love of  God became more than a theological term because you experienced  it in a person.<\/li>\n<li>Draw a picture to illustrate, &#8216;the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Read John 1:1-18 each day for a week and keep a journal of your thoughts in response to the words.\u00a0 Share your insights the next time your group meets?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Lord of all Joy, by your grace let me surrender to the joy you have given me.\u00a0 Let me live this day in the light of the Word, made flesh, and evident to me.
