{"id":2169,"date":"2010-12-07T07:26:23","date_gmt":"2010-12-07T12:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=2169"},"modified":"2010-12-06T16:21:19","modified_gmt":"2010-12-06T21:21:19","slug":"december-8-14-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/december-8-14-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"December 8-14, 2010&#8211;Are You Prepared for This?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Angie Larson, Clive, IA<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What do you do to prepare for Christmas?<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Are You Prepared for This?<\/h3>\n<p>This October, like every year, stores begin their visual preparations for the Christmas shopping season.\u00a0 On October 30 the Macy\u2019s department store in Philadelphia, PA had a special treat for shoppers.\u00a0 In the middle of their shopping day, a choir of over 650 opera and choral singers began singing Handel\u2019s <em>Messiah<\/em>, complete with organ.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/13147934_opera-random-act-of-culture2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2186\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/13147934_opera-random-act-of-culture2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>This event was birthed by The Knight Foundation, founded by Jack and Jim Knight, which provides funds for a program it calls Random Acts of Culture.\u00a0\u00a0 The foundation plans to fund 1000 random acts of culture over the next three years.\u00a0 The vision includes getting\u00a0cultural events, such as music, dance, and opera, out of concert halls, theaters, and museums into\u00a0public places like Macy\u2019s, making them accessible\u00a0to all. The video of the \u201cMessiah\u201d has already had over 5 million hits on YouTube.\u00a0\u00a0 The Knight&#8217;s vision includes what they call the &#8220;transformative power of the arts to help people to experience life in its fullest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dennis Scholl, the Foundation\u2019s vice president says,\u00a0\u201cHearing Handel or seeing the tango in an unexpected place provides a deeply felt reminder of how the classics can enrich our lives. As you\u2019ll see in our videos, the performances make people smile, dance, and grab their cameras \u2013 even cry with joy. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>In the Gospel we find John the Baptist in jail.\u00a0 He has heard of Jesus and proclaimed his\u00a0coming, but now he doubts.\u00a0John has been preparing for and expecting the arrival of the Messiah, however, Jesus still takes him by surprise.\u00a0 The doubting John sends some of his followers to go ask Jesus if he is the one that they had been waiting for.\u00a0 Jesus responds by asking John&#8217;s messengers to bear witness to what they are seeing and hearing in Jesus&#8217; ministry.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus\u00a0 praises John and proclaims him as the messenger sent before him to fulfill the scriptures. To even\u00a0John the Baptist Jesus came unexpectedly.\u00a0 Through\u00a0John&#8217;s doubt Jesus\u00a0reminds us that He is Lord and\u00a0came to proclaim\u00a0good news to the poor.<\/p>\n<p>We have Christmas time expectations as we prepare. We expect that we\u2019ll receive catalogs in the mail, that Christmas music will be playing in the mall, and that we\u2019ll wrap and open some presents.\u00a0 We prepare for the day; we buy the food, bake the cookies, and decorate our homes. However,\u00a0we don\u2019t expect the most miraculous thing that happens.\u00a0 Jesus comes to us, bringing good news.\u00a0 He heals us and gives us hope.\u00a0 Like the shoppers at Macy\u2019s, expecting an ordinary day then experiencing a moment of incredible beautly, we find something waiting for us as Jesus transforms the ordinary into the the extraordinary.\u00a0\u00a0He brings good news to our hearts again and again, even if, like John,\u00a0we already know Him.\u00a0 The way has been prepared, but the path is unexpected.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>John the Baptist wondered about Jesus being the Messiah even though Jesus calls him great (v.11).\u00a0 What does that that mean for us as we wonder?<\/li>\n<li>Jesus was known to be the Messiah through his actions.\u00a0 How can we be known as Christians through our actions?<\/li>\n<li>What are some ways that Jesus has been known to you unexpectedly?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<p>Create your own Random Act of Christians. Have your group brainstorm some ways members could bring the unexpected nature of Jesus to others outside of the church walls.\u00a0 Here are some suggestions:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pass out dollar bills at the mall to people with no strings attached.\u00a0 See how they react and talk about grace.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Feed the hungry, offer to pay for someone else\u2019s meal at a fast food restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sing Christmas carols to senior citizens or just to people you know\u00a0are in need.<\/p>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Dear Lord Jesus, as we prepare for this Christmas season, remind us of those places in which you give us the unexpected.\u00a0 You came so we could have life and live it abundantly; please change our perceptions that need to be changed and\u00a0renew us daily through our baptismal promises.\u00a0 Help us to be continually surprised by who you are. Thank you for being present in our hearts.
