{"id":2143,"date":"2010-11-23T07:33:39","date_gmt":"2010-11-23T12:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=2143"},"modified":"2010-12-02T13:49:35","modified_gmt":"2010-12-02T18:49:35","slug":"november-28-2010-waiting-for-the-second-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/november-28-2010-waiting-for-the-second-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"November 24-30, 2010&#8211;Waiting for the Second Coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Bill King, Blacksburg, VA<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>Share a time when you anticipated a special day or event and were disappointed?<\/p>\n<h3>Waiting for the Second Coming<\/h3>\n<p>They believe he will some day return and are waiting patiently.\u00a0 They are the tribesman of Tanna, one of 83 islands that make up <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanuatu\">Vanuatu<\/a>, formerly the Anglo-<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/11\/Phillip1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2148\" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/11\/Phillip1-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/11\/Phillip1-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/11\/Phillip1.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a>French territory of the New Hebrides.\u00a0 The person they are awaiting is Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II.\u00a0 For reasons that are not entirely clear, the people of this South Pacific island believe Philip is a descendant of their spirit ancestors and for the past half century they have worshipped him as a god.\u00a0 The adulation began in the 1960s and is believed to be a synthesis of traditional religion, the idea of a returning messiah figure introduced by Christian missionaries, and respect for the royal family dating from colonial days.<\/p>\n<p>Philip\u2019s birthday, June 10, is celebrated on the island every year, but there was special anticipation in 2010 because many believed this was the year he had promised to return.\u00a0 The tribesman prepared a traditional bamboo hut, with dirt floor and thatched roof for him.\u00a0 Siko Nathuan, the village chief, said, &#8220;I&#8217;ve been preparing this place for when he comes to live among us.\u00a0 I know that in England he has a palace and servants. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>Did Jesus expect a \u201csecond coming\u201d to occur before the first generation of Christians had died?\u00a0 That is a question which provokes lively discussion among biblical scholars.\u00a0 What is not debatable is that popular culture tends to get the priorities of this week\u2019s text exactly reversed.\u00a0 Matthew\u2019s Jesus calls us to focus on faithfulness in the here and now, but too often we get distracted by pointless pondering about what the last days will be like.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus could not make it any clearer, \u201cOf that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.\u201d\u00a0 But that does not keep bad literature such as the <em>Left Behind<\/em> novels from promoting lurid, morbid obsession with the final days.\u00a0 The problem with focusing on the last days is that we become pessimistic spectators to the world\u2019s pain rather than engaged disciples of Jesus who are concerned with easing that suffering.<\/p>\n<p>We periodically read about a small group of fanatics who believe they have discerned the date the world will end.\u00a0 They gather on a mountain top and wait for the cosmic fireworks to begin.\u00a0 Such folks are simply the most bizarre example of an attitude which can take root in any Christian community, an attitude which says, \u201cThis world is so bad, let\u2019s just hunker down in our holy bunker\u2014safely apart from the sinful corruption of society\u2014and wait for God to make everything right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such thinking is 180 degrees from what Jesus desires from his disciples.\u00a0 In God\u2019s good time all <em>will<\/em> be made right, but in the mean time our calling is not speculation about the future, but faithful ministry in the spirit of Jesus.\u00a0 If we are serious about following Christ, our concern is not just who will be \u201cleft behind\u201d on a distant judgment day, but who gets \u201cleft behind\u201d every day as the despairing fail to hear of God\u2019s love in Christ, the poor go to bed hungry, students are bullied because they are somehow different, and good educational opportunities go only to those lucky enough to live in affluent suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>There is no need for us to worry about the specifics of the last days.\u00a0 If we live faithfully in each present moment the future will take care of itself.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you think novels such as the <em>Left Behind<\/em> series are so popular; what longings or fears do they tap into?<\/li>\n<li>If you knew the \u201csecond coming\u201d was tomorrow, how would it change how you spend today?<\/li>\n<li>Jesus says we must be ready at all times, what would being ready look like in your daily life?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the people most likely to be left behind in our world\u2014out of sight, out of mind?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<p>Look at the list of those who are most likely to be \u201cleft behind\u201d which you generated in response to the last discussion question.\u00a0\u00a0 Plan an action which you can do within one week which will show Christ\u2019s concern\u2014then do it.<\/p>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Lord of History, all time is in your hands; the future belongs to you.\u00a0 Preserve us from fears which lead us to despair, apathy which saps our resolve, and speculations which have no purpose.\u00a0 Instead, focus our eyes on the example of our Lord Jesus Christ that we, like him,\u00a0\u00a0 may bear witness to your abiding love in all we say and do.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Bill King, Blacksburg, VA Warm-up Question Share a time when you anticipated a special day or event and were disappointed?
