{"id":2095,"date":"2010-11-09T07:19:51","date_gmt":"2010-11-09T12:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=2095"},"modified":"2010-11-03T10:17:46","modified_gmt":"2010-11-03T15:17:46","slug":"november-10-16-2010-between-a-rock-and-a-hard-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/november-10-16-2010-between-a-rock-and-a-hard-place\/","title":{"rendered":"November 10-16, 2010&#8211;Between a Rock and a Hard Place"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Jocelyn Breeland, Fairfax, VA<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>Have you ever found yourself in a tough situation with\u00a0 no good choices?<\/p>\n<h3>Between a Rock and a Hard Place<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lohud.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=201010200336\">LoHud.com <\/a>recently reported the suicides of Nejla Akkoc, 71, and her 31-year-old daughter Ayshe who were found dead in their White Plains home.\u00a0 Ayshe had cerebral palsy and needed a wheelchair.\u00a0 Nejla, Ayshe\u2019s sole care giver, had recently learned she had terminal cancer.\u00a0 A note the pair left indicated it had become increasingly difficult for Nejla to care for her daughter, so the two decided to leave the world together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/11\/shutterstock_58639987edit1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2121\" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/11\/shutterstock_58639987edit1-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/11\/shutterstock_58639987edit1-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/11\/shutterstock_58639987edit1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a>The challenge of older parents caring for their children with disabilities is not uncommon.\u00a0 Nationwide, 62 percent of people with disabilities live with family members; more than 700,000 of them live with parents or family members over the age of 60. At the same time, state budget cuts have made it more difficult for families to find services for their loved ones with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>In Indiana, families report that state workers have suggested they leave people with severe disabilities at homeless shelters.\u00a0 A spokesman for the Family and Social Services Administration said this is not state policy and the individuals who made this suggestion have been disciplined.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the situation is critical for families in a state where waiting lists for disability services contain more than 20,000 names.\u00a0 Some of those on the list have been waiting more than 10 years, and 2,000 slots were eliminated in the most recent round of state budget cuts.\u00a0 A similar story is playing out in just about every state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s heart-wrenching,as a parent, to watch it.\u00a0 We are people and they are people,\u201d said one parent, speaking of her son and others with disabilities.\u00a0 \u201cThey have lives that are worth something.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Put yourself in Nejla and Ayshe Akkoc\u2019s place.\u00a0 What emotions do you think they felt?<\/li>\n<li>A common observation by those who work to prevent suicide is that &#8220;suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem.&#8221;\u00a0 What might make someone believe suicide is the best of several bad options?\u00a0 Do you think suicide can ever the best choice in times of crisis?<\/li>\n<li>Most of Nejla and Ayshe\u2019s family lived in Turkey.\u00a0 What role might separation from family have played in their feelings about their situation?<\/li>\n<li>What resources can Christian faith and community offer to people in situations like the Akkocs\u2019?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, November 14, 2010 (Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=155638539\">Malachi 4:1-2a<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=155638390\">2 Thessalonians 3:6-13<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=155638419\">Luke 21:5-19<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. In today\u2019s gospel Jesus tells his hearers that not only is the end not coming right away, but there are going to be countless trials before that time.\u00a0 Jesus anticipates many terrors: wars between nations, natural disasters, persecution in the synagogues, and even division within families.<\/p>\n<p>With nearly 2,000 years of hindsight, we can certainly say these predictions have come true, and we have to expect that these trials will continue throughout our lifetimes.\u00a0 But despite the certainty of persecution and even death, Jesus does not want us to despair.\u00a0 \u201cBut not a hair of your head will perish,\u201d he says.\u00a0 \u201cBy standing firm you will gain life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No matter how difficult a situation, or how limited our choices, we know that Jesus is with us.\u00a0 In the face of every hardship and disaster, Jesus\u2019 promise of eternal life remains.\u00a0 He is always with us; in the end, his victory is sure. Knowing this makes our hard choices easier.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Who are the deceivers Jesus refers to in verse 8?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think knowing that difficulties are inevitable makes it easier to accept and cope with problems when they arise?<\/li>\n<li>What challenges do you face which are most difficult for you?\u00a0 How does today&#8217;s gospel lesson speak to those challenges?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestion<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes God&#8217;s answer to a desperate prayer is us.\u00a0 Scan your local newspaper for stories of individuals and families faced with difficult choices and consider two questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How is your congregation already engaged in supporting those who face the difficult choices noted in the stories?<\/li>\n<li>Are there specific ways you, your youth group, or congregation might be help those in these situations?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Offer a prayer, lifting up, by name, the persons mentioned\u00a0 in the stories you identified.\u00a0 Ask for God\u2019s intervention in each situation and for the willingness and wisdom to be part of that intervention.<\/p>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for the many blessings you offer us every day.\u00a0 When times are tough, help us to remember your steadfast promise of eternal life.\u00a0 Give us the wisdom and strength to always choose your will, your way.\u00a0 In the name of your son, Jesus Christ, our rock and our deliverer.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Jocelyn Breeland, Fairfax, VA Warm-up Question Have you ever found yourself in a tough situation with\u00a0 no good choices?
