{"id":1953,"date":"2010-09-14T07:46:03","date_gmt":"2010-09-14T12:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=1953"},"modified":"2010-09-10T10:51:33","modified_gmt":"2010-09-10T15:51:33","slug":"september-15-21-2010-doing-good-by-doing-well","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/september-15-21-2010-doing-good-by-doing-well\/","title":{"rendered":"September 15-21, 2010&#8211;Doing Good by Doing Well?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Eric Ullestad, West Des Moines, IA<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>When have you been given more responsibility than you thought you could handle?\u00a0 How did it turn out?<\/p>\n<h3>Doing Good by Doing Well?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/09\/shutterstock_60141154.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1962\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/09\/shutterstock_60141154-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>What\u2019s it like to head up the world\u2019s biggest company?\u00a0 Mike Duke knows.\u00a0 He was named CEO of Wal-Mart in 2009.\u00a0 This was a daunting task for Duke.\u00a0 He inherited a major improvement plan, Project Impact, from his predecessor, which gave a face-lift to nearly every Wal-Mart store around the world.\u00a0 This multi-billion dollar project came on the heels of the nation\u2019s biggest economic crisis in decades.\u00a0 Duke soon discovered that, though shoppers liked the fresh look of the stores, they were visiting less frequently and spending less each time they came.<\/p>\n<p>Wal-Mart has also endured its share of public-relations setbacks in the past few years.\u00a0 \u201cBig Box Stores\u201d like Wal-Mart are often cited as reasons why smaller retailers are closing up shop.\u00a0 Wal-Mart also came under fire for shady employment practices that required close to full-time labor from employees, but offered no benefits beyond an hourly wage.\u00a0 Some people have called for a boycott of Wal-Mart stores because some of their products are manufactured in countries that don\u2019t provide safe working conditions for farmers and textile workers.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these, and other, obstacles, Wal-Mart continues to set the pace for global commerce, topping $408 billion in sales for 2010.\u00a0 Being entrusted with the responsibility of running a company of 8,500 stores and 2.1 million employees is a task that Duke welcomes.\u00a0 He is already looking to the future in the hopes of building a \u201cnext-generation Wal-Mart.\u201d\u00a0 This won\u2019t be easy, as economists consider the possibility of a \u201cdouble-dip\u201d recession in the months ahead.\u00a0 Duke believes that enhancing the company\u2019s participation in social programs, ensuring living wages for employees, and adding stores in growing markets like China and India will be benchmarks of Wal-Mart\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Would you want to be CEO of Wal-Mart?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>What challenges (financial, ethical, legal) would you encounter as the head of a major corporation?<\/li>\n<li>How would you demonstrate your leadership abilities if you were given this kind of responsibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, September 19, 2010 (Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=150881486\">Amos 8:4-7<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=150881527\">1 Timothy 2:1-7<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=150881779\">Luke 16:1-13<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>The Parable of the Shrewd (Dishonest) Manager, found in Luke 16:1-13, is one of the most perplexing tales in all of Scripture.\u00a0 It has confounded scholars for centuries.\u00a0 So, if you\u2019re not quite sure what Jesus is trying to say, you\u2019re in good company.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus begins by telling his disciples, within an earshot of the Pharisees, about a manager who wasn\u2019t taking good care of his master\u2019s property.\u00a0 The master is about to fire the manager, but before he is relieved of his duties, the manager has to turn over the accounting books to the master.\u00a0 Quickly, the manager goes to the people who are indebted to the master and reduces their debt.\u00a0 By doing this, he has built a relationship with the lowly servants in the community; a relationship that he may need to rely upon once he is unemployed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The odd thing about this story is that Jesus concludes by praising the tactics of the <strong>dishonest<\/strong> manager.\u00a0 He even encourages the disciples to \u201cmake friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth.\u201d\u00a0 Fortunately for us, he goes on to talk about faithfulness and responsibility.\u00a0 Jesus calls his followers to be \u201cfaithful with what belongs to another,\u201d indicating that if a person is responsible with caring for someone else\u2019s possessions, they will prove themselves trustworthy to handle their own riches.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, the easiest verse in this passage to comprehend is also the most difficult verse to implement.\u00a0 \u201cYou cannot serve God and wealth.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s an interesting choice of word.\u00a0 Notice he doesn\u2019t say \u201cmoney\u201d or \u201cpossessions.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus says that <em>wealth<\/em> is the \u201cmaster\u201d that is in direct opposition to God. In other words, focusing on acquiring a lot of stuff isn\u2019t the way that God works.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the debtors in the parable.\u00a0 A hundred containers of wheat and a hundred containers of oil were crippling debts to the poor people, but likely didn\u2019t mean much to the wealthy master.\u00a0 This is not unlike the world we live in today.\u00a0 We currently have the highest concentration of wealth in recorded history.\u00a0 The wealthiest 20% of the people in the world have 83% of the wealth, while the poorest 60% have only 6% of the wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this story can teach us that God rejects the systems that make it possible for wealth to be accumulated at the expense of the poor.\u00a0 God doesn\u2019t appear to be anti-stuff, God just wants to make sure everyone has enough to live.\u00a0 Serving God, therefore, might mean doing what we can to bring about economic justice and equality to all of God\u2019s people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you think Jesus praised the shrewd \/ dishonest manager?<\/li>\n<li>How would you interpret this parable?<\/li>\n<li>What can this parable teach us about faithfulness and responsibility?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>What do you think about what Jesus says in verse 13?<\/li>\n<li>How do you find yourself serving the god of wealth?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Activity Suggestion<\/h3>\n<p>Use your phones, computers, iPods, etc. to do some research on companies that are giving back to their workers, helping to reduce debt, or helping to lessen the gap between wealth and poverty.\u00a0 (Examples include Fair Trade products, American Apparel clothing, Tom\u2019s Shoes, and Justice Clothing.)\u00a0 Discuss ways to support companies, especially locally owned businesses that reinvest their wealth in responsible ways.\u00a0 Consider sharing your findings with people in your congregation.\u00a0 Be creative!<\/p>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>God of abundance, thank you for the many blessings in our lives.\u00a0 Help us to turn away from the false comfort of wealth and serve you by caring for those in need. \u00a0Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Eric Ullestad, West Des Moines, IA Warm-up Question When have you been given more responsibility than you thought you could handle?\u00a0 How did it turn out?
