{"id":1845,"date":"2010-07-27T07:57:13","date_gmt":"2010-07-27T12:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=1845"},"modified":"2010-07-26T13:20:41","modified_gmt":"2010-07-26T18:20:41","slug":"july-28-august-3-2010-when-im-60-ill-get-around-to-that","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/july-28-august-3-2010-when-im-60-ill-get-around-to-that\/","title":{"rendered":"July 28-August 3, 2010&#8211;When I&#8217;m 60 I&#8217;ll Get Around to That"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Jay Gamelin, Pastor of Jacob&#8217;s Porch, Lutheran campus mission to The Ohio State University.<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0What would you do with ten million dollars?\u00a0 Go ahead, fantasize away!\u00a0 Try and be honest.<\/p>\n<h3>When I&#8217;m 60, I&#8217;ll Get Around to That<\/h3>\n<p>Something happened to Bill and Melinda Gates.\u00a0 After the Gates amassed many billions of dollars founding Microsoft and creating Windows software, the two asked themselves what all this wealth was for.\u00a0 Building more houses, buying more companies, and creating more wealth seemed hollow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/07\/shutterstock_57382090.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1853\" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/07\/shutterstock_57382090-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/07\/shutterstock_57382090-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/07\/shutterstock_57382090.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It was then they met Bono, the lead singer for the band U2.\u00a0 Often outspoken on behalf of the poor, Bono challenged the Gates to understand the challenge of &#8220;stupid poverty&#8221;, that is, the people who die for want of a $2 pill because they live on $1 a day.\u00a0 This was enough to draw Gates away from Microsoft years before he intended to shift his focus from making money to giving it away. He and Melinda looked around and recognized the shortcoming of the way in which the world values wealth and its distribution. &#8220;Those lives were being treated as if they weren&#8217;t valuable,&#8221; Gates told FORTUNE in 2002. &#8220;Well, when you have the resources that could make a very big impact, you can&#8217;t just say to yourself, &#8216;O.K., when I&#8217;m 60, I&#8217;ll get around to that. Stand by.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So rather than continuing to amass more wealth, the Gates family began to give it away.\u00a0 With a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/Pages\/home.aspx\">foundation that is now worth over 30 billion <\/a>(yes, with a \u201cB\u201d) dollars and growing from a generous contribution from Warren Buffet, the wealthiest man in the world matches all gifts given by the foundation to the tune of another 30 billion dollars.\u00a0 The fund focuses on ending poverty in the poorest countries and fighting HIV-AIDS and avoidable diseases in the world\u2019s poorest economies.<\/p>\n<p>The Gates saw wealth, not as an end, but as a\u00a0means to an end, a way they can contribute to ending poverty in this lifetime.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever faced need and not been able to get what you needed?\u00a0 If you have, how did this feel?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>If you have not, imagine what it would feel like to see extravagant wealth somewhere else while you were hungry?\u00a0 What would you do to support your family?\u00a0 What if you were not able to do this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, August 1, 2010 (Tenth Sunday after Pentecost)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=147157117\">Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14, 2:18-23<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=147157181\">Colossians 3:1-11<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=147157221\">Luke 12:13-21<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. It is not about creating a guilt trip for those who have.\u00a0 Nor is it a commendation to be poor.\u00a0 Poverty is not in itself a value we should embrace.\u00a0 This is a lesson about questions, the ones we ask ourselves when we have.<\/p>\n<p>The Gates figured out that they had much.\u00a0 They had amassed a staggering fortune, in fact larger than some national economies.\u00a0 They had built extravagant homes, formed companies, bought more, and done more.\u00a0 Yet, despite it all, they still had much.\u00a0 At this point they had to ask themselves a question: Do we continue to try to grow a fortune or decide that the value is not in possessing wealth but giving it away?\u00a0 They, of course, answered the call and are now considered two of the biggest philanthropists in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it is easy to hold up the Gates family, they have so much to give.\u00a0 They could give away 90% of their income and still be considered extremely wealthy.\u00a0 With such wealth, perhaps giving it away is rather painless.\u00a0 But more than the amount, it was the decision that we focus upon.\u00a0 They faced a difficult question and answered it the best way they could.<\/p>\n<p>In the text, the rich man has amassed a fortune.\u00a0 Seeing his fortune grow, he was forced to ask what to do next.\u00a0 His decision was to build another barn, store more food.\u00a0 We can see the story and say, \u201cWell, I would never do this!\u00a0 If I were rich I would give it away!\u201d Would you give it away?\u00a0 Are you rich?\u00a0 These are questions to ask yourself: How many outfits do you need in your closet to clothe yourself nicely for a week?\u00a0 How many pairs of shoes do you possess?\u00a0 How many cars do you need to own?\u00a0 How big a house do you really \u201cneed\u201d?\u00a0 How much do you need to eat?\u00a0 Do you really need that second TV?\u00a0 Is cable necessary?\u00a0 How many drinking glasses do you have in your home and how many mouths?<\/p>\n<p>But you might say, \u201cBut this means I need to account for every dollar I spend!\u201d\u00a0 Yes, you do.\u00a0 We need to be confronted with our own wealth and understand that we are the rich man.\u00a0 The average American spends enough in a year on food to feed a village in other parts of the world.\u00a0 This should stop us short in our tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Again, this is not about guilt for being rich.\u00a0 It is about important questions: What do we have?\u00a0 What are we doing with it?\u00a0 What are we doing to help?\u00a0 What more can we do?\u00a0 These are the questions rich Christians such as we who read this study, downloaded from the internet on our expensive computers, can and should ask themselves everyday\u2014for \u00a0tomorrow our lives are required of us and do not belong to us.\u00a0 Let us use our riches to lift up others.\u00a0 In this we become rich in God and not to ourselves.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you think you owe anything to anyone else if you are rich?\u00a0 Why or why not?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>What advantages do you think someone like Bill Gates may have had as opposed to a person in a third world country?\u00a0 What advantages did he have in schooling and\u00a0in the infrastructure of this country?<\/li>\n<li>What obstacles might a person in a third world country face? How much more difficult is it to give them a hand-up to achieve?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s ask the question again: What would you do with ten million dollars?\u00a0 What would be OK to keep?\u00a0 What would be OK to give away?\u00a0 How much is enough to live on?\u00a0 How much is enough to give away?<\/p>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWHAT\u2019S IN YOUR WALLET?\u201d:\u00a0 To avoid embarrassment, let read ahead and describe the activity.\u00a0 Find a volunteer to either empty her purse, a back pack, or take everything out of his pockets.\u00a0 Take a look at what is in there.\u00a0 Look at\u00a0what is\u00a0in the wallet or purse as if you were an anthropologist or perhaps an archeologist.\u00a0 If you did not know\u00a0this person, what could you tell about him or her?<\/p>\n<p>Now look at these things as an economist.\u00a0 Which of these things are necessary for life?\u00a0 Which are \u201cextra\u201d things?\u00a0 Which would this person not miss?\u00a0 Which would they miss?<\/p>\n<p>PROCESS:\u00a0 We all have things in our lives and there are some things we need and some we do not.\u00a0 Our hope is that what we have can be used not only for ourselves but to support others, all for the glory of God.\u00a0 The commercial says, \u201cWhat\u2019s in your wallet?\u201d\u00a0 I think it is a good question\u2014what does what I have say about me?
