Paul Henrickson, Chaplain and Dean of the Chapel, Roanoke College, Salem, VA<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>Go around the group and respond to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the world more populated by sheep or wolves?<\/li>\n<li>Would you rather be a sheep or a wolf?<\/li>\n<li>Name a sheep; name a wolf.<\/li>\n<li>Are Christians among the sheep or the wolves?<\/li>\n<li>Does Christianity have any enemies?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Sheep and Wolves<\/h3>\n<p>I write this on June 21, 2010.\u00a0 I am reminded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/learning\/general\/onthisday\/big\/0621.html#article\">New York Times<\/a>, that on this day in 1964, three civil rights workers disappeared in Philadelphia, Miss. Their bodies were found buried in an earthen dam six weeks later. Eight members of the Ku Klux Klan went to prison on federal conspiracy charges; none served more than six years.\u00a0 In our day, working for justice continues to have its dangerous side, however, one is more likely to be threatened with the weapon of apathy rather than with a club or a gun.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus warns his disciples: \u00a0\u201cSee, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In our present day, there is a full scale attack on Christianity, led by some who hold to the assumption that God does not matter and that religion is for those who have become thoughtlessly captive to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meme\">memes<\/a>&#8221; .\u00a0\u00a0Richard Dawkins,\u00a0 who coined this word for a cultural idea, symbol, or practice goes on to say: \u201cI doubt that religion can survive deep understanding. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/06\/shutterstock_1249271.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1776\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/06\/shutterstock_1249271-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/06\/shutterstock_1249271-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/06\/shutterstock_1249271.jpg 334w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>There are a few essays that I read over every three months or so to keep me from grazing too far from the Word.\u00a0 When my preaching has become rather predictable (or dry), I read Stanley Hauerwas\u2019 article: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thomerica.com\/essays\/hauerwas_preaching-as-though-we-had-enemies.pdf\">Preaching As Though We Had Enemies<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 In this essay he writes, \u201cMost of us do not go to church because we are seeking a safe haven from our enemies; we go to church to be assured we have no enemies.\u201d<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the text for this week, Jesus assures us that speaking the Gospel will be a dangerous calling.\u00a0 \u201cSee, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.\u201d\u00a0 Does that cause any anxiety in your heart?\u00a0 Perhaps our faith has become too tame, too domesticated to generate a real threat to those who would be our enemies.\u00a0 Perhaps the weapon of apathy does not warrant a defensive response.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine what Sunday morning worship be like if we arrived as those who had been wounded in the spiritual battle.\u00a0 There would be prayers of comfort, songs of confident praise, a message of courage and hope, mutual conversation and consolation among the faithful, and a meal of bread and wine \u2013 rations for the week ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Our own Lutheran Church (ELCA), is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Who-We-Are\/Our-Three-Expressions\/Churchwide-Organization\/Communication-Services\/News\/Resources\/Stats.aspx\">losing more than 200 members EACH DAY<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a crisis of faith and evangelism; the wolves seem to be winning the numbers game.<\/p>\n<p>So, fellow sheep, what are we called to do?\u00a0 Prayer followed by action; songs followed by commitment, preaching that inspires and challenges; conversation that supports and encourages \u2013 these will be the marks of the flock who wander out among the wolves.\u00a0 By the power of Jesus Christ, we will not fail.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>How might a local parish refocus its ministry as \u201csheep among the wolves?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Where do \u201cthe sheep\u201d get fed and protected?<\/li>\n<li>What is the scariest \u201cwolf\u201d in your world?<\/li>\n<li>What \u201cwolf\u201d most threatens the ministry of the church?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Role play an encounter with a \u201cspiritual, but not religious\u201d friend<\/li>\n<li>Make a contract with the group to invite one person to worship next Sunday<\/li>\n<li>Watch the first 10 minutes of the evening news and imagine how people of faith might react to the stories<\/li>\n<li>Watch the following video on YouTube: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mrQqDqOx3KY&amp;feature=related\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mrQqDqOx3KY&amp;feature=related<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>In the name of Jesus Christ we pray\u2026Lord of Life, give us the courage to speak your word in a world of unbelief.\u00a0 When we would rather \u201cplay it safe,\u201d startle us to faith; when we get bored and apathetic, astonish us with grace; when we fear that we are too weak to confront the wolves, give us courage.\u00a0Help us to be fed by your word this day.\u00a0 \u00a0Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by R.
