Among the stories of devastation are stories of hope.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Frank and June Williams and their three daughters, Angie, Dawn and Pria; and two sons, Trevor and Mike, are Haitian residents.\u00a0 Frank is one of the directors of World Vision in Haiti.\u00a0 The apartment in which his family lived in Port-au-Prince collapsed, leaving June, Dawn and Pria trapped inside. Frank, who was outside, used a flashlight to frantically search for his family within the rubble.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_49190146.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1547\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; border: black 5px solid;\" title=\"shutterstock_49190146\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_49190146-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_49190146-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_49190146.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>June recounts the earthquake this way in an e-mail to a friend, \u201cThere was a loud, deep rumble and the earth shook and shifted.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t move my feet, I could only throw the girls down under me and under the archway.\u00a0 Five stories of concrete and tile came down on us.\u00a0 I looked at my hands that were covering the girl\u2019s heads. My hands couldn\u2019t protect them from anything. Yet, we were not crushed.\u00a0 Five foot ceiling slabs came down.\u00a0 Our heads were embedded with concrete. It was an absolute miracle.\u00a0 I\u2019ve determined that there must have been a great big, strong angel standing over us, and smaller pieces of rubble were being sifted through his wings and landed on us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>June, Dawn, and Pria survived.\u00a0 When the quake stopped they quickly ran from the apartment building through an opening in the outer wall.\u00a0 A second tremor brought down the rest of the building as they were running for a mountainside. If Jesus claims this identity, they will likely stone him for blasphemy.\u00a0 They desire to accuse and discredit him and also incriminate his disciples.\u00a0 They have seen his miraculous actions but still refuse to believe who he is.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus says his disciples are different.\u00a0 In contrast to the Pharisees, who are trying to avoid the evidence in front of their eyes, Jesus\u2019 followers enjoy a special and blessed relationship to God. He gives them a sense of belonging and identity.\u00a0 They are his and he knows them intimately.\u00a0 Not only does he know them, but he gives them protection and eternal life.\u00a0 In me, says Jesus, my disciples know the love and care of the Father.<\/p>\n<p>This gift is for us too.\u00a0 Tragedy will come and shake our lives. We will lose people we love.\u00a0 We will be tempted to despair.\u00a0 Some days the challenges will seem overwhelming. Jesus tells us that no one will snatch us out of his hand.\u00a0 He gives us his protection and defense.\u00a0 His actions are even louder than his words.\u00a0 June Williams placed her body over her daughters during the Haitian earthquake.\u00a0 With her parental love, she protected her daughters.\u00a0 So too did Jesus offer his body as a sign of his love for us.\u00a0 Jesus assures us that he will hold us in his hands.\u00a0 Following Jesus doesn\u2019t mean difficulty won\u2019t befall us, but it does mean God will hold us when it does.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>How does Jesus\u2019 protection give you hope?<\/li>\n<li>What are some ways that Jesus\u2019 actions spoke louder than his words?<\/li>\n<li>Jesus keeps his followers from being snatched up.\u00a0 What in our world can snatch up people?\u00a0 How can Jesus protect us from those things?\u00a0 What can we do to follow him?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do a fundraiser for Haitian relief.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Look on the ELCA website for stories of Haitian relief effort. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Faith-In-Action.aspx\">www.elca.org\/Our-Faith-In-Action.aspx<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Draw a bulls-eye for the students:\u00a0 five concentric circles, each bigger than the previous one.\u00a0 Ask them to label the center circle with someone whom they protect, (for example, children they care for or the homeless). Ask them to label the next circle with their name.\u00a0 Ask them to think of someone who protects them to label in the third circle, (for example, parents or teachers).\u00a0 In the final circle ask them to write in \u201cJesus.\u201d\u00a0 Have them process what it means to be a protector and to be protected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p><em>Blessed Savior, thank you for knowing and choosing us.\u00a0\u00a0 It feels so good to be chosen, Lord.\u00a0 Thank you for your protection.\u00a0 Please help us to protect those people whom you have entrusted to our care that, through our actions, they may see you.\u00a0 Open our eyes to see the ways we question your claim on our lives and help us to remember that you have chosen as your beloved children and disciples. \u00a0In your name we pray, Amen.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Angie Larson, Clive, Iowa Warm-up Question What does it feel like to be protected?
