{"id":1506,"date":"2010-04-12T13:12:28","date_gmt":"2010-04-12T18:12:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=1506"},"modified":"2010-04-02T13:13:26","modified_gmt":"2010-04-02T18:13:26","slug":"april-14-20-2010-rooted-in-baptism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/april-14-20-2010-rooted-in-baptism\/","title":{"rendered":"April 14-20, 2010&#8211;Rooted in Baptism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Jose Valenzuela, Alleluia Lutheran Church, Phoenix, AZ<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What are some of the challenges you face in being both a follower and leader?<\/p>\n<h3>Rooted In Baptism<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_494641093.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1526\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"shutterstock_49464109\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_494641093-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a>Some fear that our neighbor to the south, Mexico, is spiraling into a civil war rooted in the drug trade.\u00a0 Since 2006, Mexican president Felipe Calderon has declared war on the drug war in the country, which has, in turn, fueled a bloody war among the different Mexican drug cartels.\u00a0 As one cartel is dismantled, several others battle each other for control in the power vacuum.\u00a0 In September 2009 experts estimated that over 13,000 people had been murdered in Mexico due to drug related activity alone.\u00a0 According to US crime rates, there were approximately 16,000 murders in US in 2008 of all varieties.\u00a0 Last week cartels openly attacked Mexican army posts along the border.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_49464109.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_31026286.jpg\"><\/a>As the violence taking place in Mexico spills over into the United States there has been an increase in kidnappings, weapons trafficking, and murders related to the drug war in Mexico.\u00a0 Making the drug war even more problematic is the fact that most of the drugs produced in Mexico are shipped to the United States to feed our nation\u2019s drug habit.\u00a0 In addition, there seems to be a limitless number of desperate Mexicans seeking a quick way out of poverty.\u00a0 The tempting lure of money in the drug trade seems to bring in more and more members to the powerful cartels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Mexico continues its war on drugs, many are becoming fearful and pessimistic that this war can actually be won.\u00a0 A growing number of people in Mexico and the US are considering calling the Mexican war on drugs a failure and going back to the drawing board.\u00a0 Some experts have even suggested that if a new strategy is not crafted soon, Mexico runs the risk of becoming a failed state.<\/p>\n<p>Source:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/mexico\/drug_trafficking\/index.html\">http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/mexico\/drug_trafficking\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What should the United States\u2019 role be in the war on drugs in Mexico?<\/li>\n<li>What responsibility, if any, does the United States\u2019 have in the drug war in Mexico? You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>I grew up in Arizona.\u00a0 After I graduated from high school I spent the better part of 15 years moving around the country going to colleges, getting married, starting my career, and starting a family.\u00a0 In 2002 I was living in Brooklyn, NY, serving a parish as a Youth Minister, when I started to hear the calling to come home.\u00a0 During the summer of 2002 my family and I moved back to Arizona to be closer to family.\u00a0 Mostly I wanted to be closer to my grandparents as their health declined.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks after I moved back to Arizona, my grandmother suffered a massive stroke. Three weeks after that she suffered a second \u201cbig one\u201d and she died.\u00a0 A<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_310262863.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1529\" style=\"margin: 5px; border: 0px;\" title=\"shutterstock_31026286\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_310262863-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a> few days after her funeral, I had fallen asleep in my recliner while watching TV late at night.\u00a0 I woke to the sound of footsteps near my bedroom and looked to see my grandmother standing in the doorway to my bedroom.\u00a0 She walked out of the room and simply said to me, \u201cMijo, go to bed and rest. It\u2019ll be fine.\u00a0 Just rest.\u201d\u00a0 I got up, went to bed and wept.<\/p>\n<p>My grandparents were born and raised in Mexico.\u00a0 My grandmother came to Arizona as a child, but she always considered herself to be Mexican.\u00a0 When she became an American citizen, she fully embraced the America life, but she never forgot where she came from.\u00a0 Her life was devoted to her family. At the time of her death, our family understood what we stood for because of her.<\/p>\n<p>As Jesus drew his ministry here on earth to a close, his final interactions with his disciples were intended to communicate what he expects from his followers.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_310262861.jpg\"><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/04\/shutterstock_310262861.jpg\"><\/a> Quite simply, his followers are expected to lead by Christ\u2019s example. I find it interesting that Jesus meets the disciples where their lives together started, at their roots.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of us find it difficult to come to terms with our roots.\u00a0 I know that as a second generation Mexican-American, part of my identity resides in Mexico, even though I\u2019ve never resided there. And a part of my identity resides in this country, even though I have been regarded by many in my daily life and in my Church as <em>not being American enough<\/em>.\u00a0 So I often struggle with the question: Whom shall I follow?<\/p>\n<p>The way I reconcile it all comes down to baptism.\u00a0 Through my baptism I am a child of God. In the sacrament of baptism I receive many acts of grace from God.\u00a0 At the same time God has very high expectations of God\u2019s family.\u00a0 Spending time in community, in prayer, in scripture, working for justice and peace for all of humanity\u2014these are the things that God expects.\u00a0 So how will I do this?\u00a0 How will I get all this done?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I will follow you, Lord\u2026<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Describe a time in your life where you felt very lost and were looking for something or someone to grab on to.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>How does understanding or maybe not understanding your roots influence your relationship with God?<\/li>\n<li>What does it mean to \u201cfollow Jesus\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestion<\/h3>\n<p>Make a family tree that goes back to your great grandparents.<\/p>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Holy and mighty God, you have filled us to the brim with life and goodness.\u00a0 You have given us the gift of community and the gift of feelings.\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 In the midst of our searching and finding, may we find glimmers of you.\u00a0 Watch over us, lead us, direct us, help us when were lost and keep us humble when we feel found.\u00a0 And help us to be mindful of the many in this world and community who are still searching.\u00a0 May your good news be proclaimed with love, dignity and respect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Jose Valenzuela, Alleluia Lutheran Church, Phoenix, AZ Warm-up Question What are some of the challenges you face in being both a follower and leader?
