For years I thought firefighters drove around looking for run-down houses to burn and was scared they would burn down our house.\u201d <\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we are mislead:\u00a0 <em>\u201cWhen I was little, my Dad told me that the tune played by the ice cream van was the ice cream man letting everyone know that he&#8217;d run out of ice cream.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What have you believed which turned out to be untrue?<\/p>\n<h3>Life Out of\u00a0Doubt<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_461944991.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_488356362.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1497 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px;\" title=\"shutterstock_48835636\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_488356362-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a>A young w<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_48835636.jpg\"><\/a>oman lay dead; nearby, an abandoned truck was stuck in the mud. \u00a0The investigation was quick. \u00a0Within hours, police had suspects and by evening Greg Taylor and Johnny Beck were in jail, charged with murder. \u00a0Both were crack addicts who admitted they were only looking for their next high. \u00a0Johnny Beck was released before trial for reasons which are unclear. Greg Taylor was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. \u00a0That was sixteen years ago. \u00a0A month ago Greg Taylor was released from prison upon the recommendation of a special innocence panel which found \u201cclear and convincing evidence\u201d that Gregory F. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gospel Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>Thomas stands in a long line of doubters stretching back to the beginning of the faith. \u00a0Abraham was skeptical that God could deliver on the promise of a son while Sarah, his wife, laughed in God\u2019s face. \u00a0Moses doubted he could accomplish what God called him to do. \u00a0Gideon demanded proof. \u00a0Elijah ran away. \u00a0Jeremiah and\u00a0Job\u2014even Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane before his arrest and crucifixion\u2014struggled with doubt. \u00a0One theologian notes that the only people in scripture who are certain of God\u2019s will stone the prophets and crucify Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_46194499.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1490 alignright\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"shutterstock_46194499\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_46194499-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_46194499-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_46194499-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/03\/shutterstock_46194499.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Doubt is not an enemy, but a friend. \u00a0Doubt keeps us from being a sucker for every get-rich, get-beautiful, get-saved scheme that comes along. \u00a0The danger is that, surrounded by pop-up ads and bogus invitations to wealth and intimacy, we will become cynical and cease to believe anything.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, it is doubt that pushes us forward in life and faith. \u00a0Doubt is a way of life for high school and college students:\u00a0\u00a0Doubting your major, doubting your current romance, doubting there will <strong>ever be<\/strong> a romance, doubting your career plans, doubting your faith.<\/p>\n<p>Doubt is useful when it pushes us beyond the superficial to the substantive, when it pushes us to ask hard questions and look at life, and ourselves, with clear and open eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Doubt is at the heart of education. \u00a0It drives the\u00a0scientific method.\u00a0 How does this work&#8230;what would happen if&#8230;can I prove&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>In our personal life doubt keeps us awake at night and commands our attention. It is unpleasant but useful, drawing us to attend to those things most important in our lives.\u00a0 Doubt pushes us to change and grow.\u00a0 It forces us to ask hard questions about faith, family, and vocation, the things which define who we are.<\/p>\n<p>Doubt is not the end but the beginning.\u00a0 Most of us, when plagued by doubt, try harder to figure it out, to think it through, to discern the truth\u2014and we should. \u00a0Whom we choose as a life partner, the career we choose, the faith we embrace will shape and change the rest of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Easter isn\u2019t about happy endings, Jesus springing up three days later so we can have Easter eggs, a new outfit and time off from school or work. \u00a0Easter is about a God who stands with us, suffers with us, even dies with us.<\/p>\n<p>The poet Gerhard Frost once wrote: \u201cDoubt gnaws at faith but faith gnaws back, and faith has better teeth.\u201d \u00a0God\u2019s promise is that Jesus can and will break through the locked and shut doors of our lives, the prison of doubt we live in. \u00a0Jesus comes through the wall, breaks in, and speaks \u201cPeace be with you.\u201d \u00a0God\u2019s peace isn\u2019t a promise that there will be no doubt, pain, struggle, indecision, or any of the other things which are part of being human, part of being in relationships. God\u2019s peace is a promise to walk with us, to strengthen us, to sustain us, to forgive us, to challenge us.<\/p>\n<p>The time for hunting Easter eggs is over, but if we are hunting for God working in our lives, we need only look where we doubt. \u00a0There we will find God\u2019s Spirit moving us to growth and faith.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Recall a time when you thought you would never be happy again. \u00a0Was God at work in you and others?<\/li>\n<li>How do we discern when doubt is useful and when it is useless?<\/li>\n<li>If doubt is a good thing, can we be certain about anything?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask several persons you love and trust if there was ever a time when they wanted to run away and leave their life behind because they were embarrassed, ashamed or in deep pain. \u00a0Ask what enabled them to survive that time and, looking back, how they see that God was at work in their lives during that time.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Reflect on a time when you were so unhappy you wanted to quit, give up, move, and get away from doubt and pain. \u00a0What enabled you to survive? \u00a0Is there a learning there for your faith?\u00a0 for your future?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>God of grace and mercy, we want to believe and trust your promises. \u00a0Give us courage and perseverance to confront the doubt and pain and brokenness in our lives. \u00a0Give us, also, the wisdom to know when to let go of broken dreams and move on. \u00a0Move our hearts to forgive others and ourselves, so we may live with Easter joy. \u00a0Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Bob Chell, Lutheran Campus Ministry at South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota Warm-up Question As children, we sometimes misconstrue reality because we misinterpret what we see: \u00a0\u201cDad took me to watch firefighters train on an abandoned house.
