{"id":1235,"date":"2010-02-16T08:27:14","date_gmt":"2010-02-16T13:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=1235"},"modified":"2010-02-22T11:55:17","modified_gmt":"2010-02-22T16:55:17","slug":"february-17-23-2010-fighting-temptation-with-purpose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/february-17-23-2010-fighting-temptation-with-purpose\/","title":{"rendered":"February 17-23, 2010, Fighting Temptation With Purpose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Angie Larson, Clive, IA<\/p>\n<h3>Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What do you think is your life&#8217;s purpose?<\/p>\n<h3>Fighting Temptation with Purpose<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/02\/shutterstock_7092103.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1265\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"shutterstock_709210\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/02\/shutterstock_7092103-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Shin Fujiyama, now 25, was born in a fishing village in Japan.\u00a0 Born with a hole in his heart, he had childhood health problems.\u00a0 The doctors told him that he didn\u2019t have long to live. \u201cSomehow I was cured,\u201d says Shin, \u201cand I became a normal kid and I had a second chance.\u201d\u00a0 Shin went on to study pre-medicine at the University of Mary Washington.<\/p>\n<p>During his sophomore year at school, life took a dramatic change.\u00a0 Along with his sister Cosmo, Shin signed up for a Christian mission trip to Honduras.\u00a0 On this trip he found his life\u2019s purpose.\u00a0 The group did their mission work in the hurricane ransacked town of El Progreso.\u00a0 Hundreds of children lived there without adequate housing, health care, or access to education. While the group was constructing a school, a ten year old girl named Carmen gave a letter to Shin.\u00a0 It shared her dream that \u201cone day every family in my village will have a safer home.\u201d\u00a0 This touched Shin greatly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Upon his return to college he and his sister began a philanthropic organization named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentshelpinghonduras.org\/\">Students Helping Honduras (SHH<\/a>).\u00a0 Shin began his fundraising campaign with two people, selling pens and pencils.\u00a0 Anxious and frustrated about the poor response, he considered giving up, but his passion burned deep. \u00a0Next, the group moved to selling Christmas cards to provide uniforms and tuition for the community of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Progreso\">El Progreso<\/a>.\u00a0 Since its inception in 2004, Shin has raised over $750,000 and SSH has grown to 25 campuses.\u00a0 The group focuses on continuing to rebuild the village where Carmen lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After graduating in 2007, Shin and Cosmo have postponed medical school and deferred well-paying jobs.\u00a0 The mission of SSH is to build a movement of young leaders to empower orphaned and vulnerable children in Honduras.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1. Accompanying the Spirit, the voice of God proclaims Jesus\u2019 identification, \u201cThis is my Son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this study\u2019s gospel text, Jesus has just spent forty days in the wilderness.\u00a0 The scripture says that, \u201cHe was famished.\u201d\u00a0 He is weakened by hunger and open to temptation.\u00a0 The devil sees this as an opportune time and comes to Jesus.\u00a0 He first tempts Jesus with bread.\u00a0 However, Jesus has seen his purpose forty days before and can stay strong through the temptation.\u00a0 Next the devil tempts Jesus with power; he shows him all that he can give Jesus authority over.\u00a0 Again, Jesus stays strong. \u00a0Finally, the devil even tempts Jesus using scripture. \u00a0Jesus, strong in his purpose, is able to resist that temptation as well.<\/p>\n<p>While your purposes are not the same as Jesus\u2019, there is still a reason why you are here. When you have an understanding of your purpose it helps you fight the temptation to do something that would cause you to lose focus.\u00a0 Your personal demons come out when you cease to be yourself.\u00a0 Your identification, a child of God, is given to you in your baptism. When you have a clear understanding of your identification and purpose, you are better able to overcome the temptation which comes your way.\u00a0 Temptation might be doubt or frustration.\u00a0 It might be power, popularity, and material goods.\u00a0 It might be messages from the world trying to get you to be or act in a way with which you are not comfortable.\u00a0 May you fight temptation, knowing that you are a child of God and that God will carry you through.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Questions:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>How does knowing your purpose keep you from temptation?<\/li>\n<li>What do you think are some ways that you can seek your purpose in life?<\/li>\n<li>What are some possible obstacles and roadblocks that could get in the way of accomplishing your purpose?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Challenge youth to seek out their purpose.\u00a0 Ask them to make a list of things that give them great joy.\u00a0 Have them pray about what God is calling them to do.<\/li>\n<li>Come up with a purpose of your group\u2019s time together.\u00a0 What is the goal?\u00a0 How can you accomplish that purpose?<\/li>\n<li>Discuss the following story and what it might mean.<em> In the story of Alice in Wonderland the Cheshire cat meets Alice crying at a crossroad.\u00a0 The cat in his mysterious way asks Alice why she is crying.\u00a0 Alice replies that she is lost.\u00a0 The cat asks her, \u201cWhich way do you want to go\u201d? \u201cI don\u2019t much care where,\u201d replies Alice.\u00a0 \u201cWell then, it doesn\u2019t matter which path you take,\u201d replies the cat.<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p>Blessed Savior, thank you for helping us see how you direct us in our lives.\u00a0 Help us to avoid roadblocks, temptations, and obstacles that may prevent or deter us from following you.\u00a0 We know that you will provide us with strength to recognize those dangers and push the demons away, for we belong to you.
