{"id":1154,"date":"2010-02-02T07:09:39","date_gmt":"2010-02-02T12:09:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=1154"},"modified":"2010-02-01T16:27:55","modified_gmt":"2010-02-01T21:27:55","slug":"february-3-9-2010-the-biggest-building-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/february-3-9-2010-the-biggest-building-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"February 3-9, 2010&#8211;The Biggest&#8230;Building&#8230;Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Jay Gamelin, Jacob&#8217;s Porch\/ Lutheran Mission to The Ohio State University,Columbus, OH<\/p>\n<h3>Warm Up Question<\/h3>\n<p>What is the biggest human-made space you have ever been in?\u00a0 Describe the space to someone in the room who has never been there.\u00a0 What descriptors do you use?\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>The Biggest&#8230;Building&#8230;Ever&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest building ever built has opened in the small country of Dubai.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burjkhalifa.ae\/\">Burj Dubai <\/a>rises 168 stories or 2,684 feet above the desert floor reaching more than a kilometer into the sky.\u00a0 This is now the tallest man-made structure in all the world, eclipsing a tower found in North Dakota that, although not a building, has claimed the title of tallest structure created by humans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/01\/shutterstock_435428922.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1173\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"shutterstock_43542892\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/01\/shutterstock_435428922-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a>The tower features the seven-star Armani Hotel designed by the Italian designer, Giorgio Armani. The 430,000-square-foot hotel has 160 guest rooms and suites across ten stories. The Hotel features eight restaurants, a spa, swimming pool, library, fitness center and business center, as well as 30,000 square feet of conference and banquet space on &#8220;mirror-smooth marble floors,&#8221; according to the Armani corporate Web site.\u00a0 Burj Dubai is part of a massive complex that includes five hotels, a huge shopping mall, more than 150 restaurants and 1,200 shops. It gets our attention, captures our imagination.\u00a0 \u201cSecond place is just the first loser,\u201d we say.\u00a0 We strive for first or not at all.\u00a0 We climb the tallest or ignore the feat.\u00a0 We build the biggest if we can.\u00a0 We plan the largest that we can afford.\u00a0 We want attention.\u00a0 We want to show what we\u2019ve got.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig\u201d is a word throughout these texts.\u00a0 Isaiah describes God\u2019s presence in the temple this way: God is so big that in this huge temple the Israelites have built, God can only fit in a stitch at the end of God\u2019s cloak&#8211;and still it fills the whole temple.\u00a0 The disciples cast a net into the sea and bring in such a huge catch that it\u00a0strains the net to the breaking point.\u00a0 Paul says he worked harder than all the other apostles&#8230; but he\u2019s not bragging, it was God\u2019s grace that allowed this.\u00a0 Big, bigger, biggest.\u00a0 Something is clamoring for our attention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Stephen's_Cathedral,_Vienna\">Saint Stephen\u2019s Cathedral in Vienna <\/a>with a friend,staring about this fifth largest Cathedral in the world. I asked my friend what he thought God thought of this big building.\u00a0 What did God think of all this grandeur?\u00a0 My friend, who is much smarter than I, said he thought God probably saw this as a two-year-old\u2019s crayon drawing posted on the fridge.\u00a0 How nice.\u00a0 How cute.\u00a0 Look what they did for me!\u00a0 How sweet.\u00a0 I made Everest, but your building is really big.\u00a0 I painted the sky with the crab nebula, but your artwork sure is pretty.\u00a0 I adore your expertly carved baptismal font, though I hold the waters of the whole world in the small of my hand.\u00a0 How can we perceive big when God is above all things?\u00a0 How do we perceive God when we are so enamored by our own creations?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The season of Epiphany means literally \u201cto be revealed.\u201d\u00a0 Today\u2019s lessons remind us that God is so above and beyond our concept of eminence that all we make is only\u00a0a pale shadow of what truly is big. God is so far \u201cabove\u201d us and \u201cbeyond\u201d us that we can\u00a0only deem ourselves as a specks of dust on a speck of dust on a speck of dust.\u00a0 After all our building, budgets, and ideas, we are still so small.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And how much more of a wonder for that!
