{"id":1128,"date":"2010-01-26T07:37:11","date_gmt":"2010-01-26T12:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=1128"},"modified":"2010-01-21T11:42:35","modified_gmt":"2010-01-21T16:42:35","slug":"january-27-february-2-being-benny-blowhard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/january-27-february-2-being-benny-blowhard\/","title":{"rendered":"January 27-February 2&#8211;Being Benny Blowhard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Contributed by Bill King, Blacksburg, VA<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Warm-up Question<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Think about the person with whom you most enjoy spending time.\u00a0 What makes that person\u2019s company so pleasant?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Being Benny Blowhard<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Are you a \u201cChatty Cathy\u201d or a \u201cBenny Blowhard\u201d?\u00a0 Everyone knows somebody who is long-winded and we usually regard such people as boring and self-absorbed.\u00a0 But according to Marty Nemko, <em>Kiplinger.com<\/em> columnist, you could be that person and not know it.\u00a0 He offers a few questions you can ask yourself to determine whether others are secretly looking for an open window to jump out of when they see you coming:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Do my pronouncements routinely exceed one minute?<\/li>\n<li>Do I wander off on tangents?<\/li>\n<li>Do my listeners often show signs of lack of interest?<\/li>\n<li>Have my friends ever called me oblivious, egocentric, or selfish?<\/li>\n<li>Do I blather on about details which interest me but are of little interest to my listener?<\/li>\n<li>Do others avoid making eye contact when they pass me for fear of getting into a long conversation?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1135\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"mouth\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/01\/mouth.jpg\" alt=\"mouth\" width=\"135\" height=\"90\" \/>Nemko says you pay a high price when people perceive you as a big mouth.\u00a0 You will be held in low esteem and are likely to have fewer friends.\u00a0 But all is not lost; there are things you can do to remedy the situation:\u00a0 Be concise.\u00a0 Be alert to your listener\u2019s non-verbal clues.\u00a0 Periodically pause and ask a question (\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d).\u00a0 Nemko suggests that you adopt the \u201ctraffic light rule.\u201d\u00a0 For the first thirty seconds assume the light is green and the listener is probably not bored.\u00a0 In the next thirty seconds the light turns yellow and the risk of boring increases.\u00a0 After sixty seconds, think red and realize that running the light with that favorite story is dangerous.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cRemember,\u201d says Nemko, \u201cIf you care about other people, you&#8217;ll make them part of the conversation\u2026 Think of it this way: Big talkers learn little. Reflection<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He could have stopped while he was ahead.\u00a0 The home town boy had come home to great acclaim.\u00a0 \u201cYes sir,\u201d they were saying, \u201cthat Jesus has turned out to be quite a preacher\u2014knows his Bible backwards and forward.\u201d\u00a0 The text he\u2019d picked from Isaiah was always a crowd pleaser.\u00a0 Those words about release to the captives, sight to the blind, and liberty for the oppressed\u2014that sounded great to people who lived every day with their noses rubbed in their insignificance to the empire which ruled them.\u00a0 Despite all appearances they <em>were <\/em>important.\u00a0 God had not forgotten them; someday there would be a reckoning.\u00a0 The world would see how special they were.\u00a0 Just hearing the prophet\u2019s words read gave the whole congregation a warm feeling.\u00a0 All Jesus had to do to end the day very well-liked was to stop talking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1146\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"upset\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/01\/upset-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"upset\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>But being popular was never a high priority for Jesus.\u00a0 So he reminds the congregation of an inconvenient truth:\u00a0 God seems to care about everyone, Jew and Gentile.\u00a0 There were plenty of hungry Jewish widows when God sent Elijah to Sidon.\u00a0 Even more offensive to those who assumed God\u2019s love was only for Israel, Jesus points out that God directed Elisha to heal a foreign conqueror when there were plenty of pious lepers among the Chosen People.\u00a0 In an instant Jesus went from hometown hero to outsider on the lam.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Theologian Elton Trueblood observed that \u201cthe world is equally shocked at hearing Christianity criticized and seeing it practiced.\u201d\u00a0 We hear about God\u2019s love and get a warm feeling.\u00a0 It\u2019s good to know that nothing we can do will separate us from God.\u00a0 We gather with the community in Christ, sing happy songs, and take comfort from the support which surrounds us.\u00a0 Nothing wrong with that.\u00a0 But then Jesus has the audacity to suggest that he might love the folks who are not like us.\u00a0 He might care about those who practice other religions, live in countries at war with our own, have a different colored skin, or have a lifestyle we find offensive.\u00a0 Even more appalling, he seems to want us to love them too.\u00a0 Then we are not so sure we like this God after all.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unconditional, expansive love is fine in the abstract\u2014but, Jesus, I was really thinking it meant that you love folks fundamentally like me and mine.\u00a0 You mean it includes precisely those I find most offensive?\u00a0 Lord, if you think I am going to do that, there is the cliff I\u2019d like you take a step off of\u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sometimes we get in trouble for talking too much.\u00a0 The question is whether people find us offensive because we are not saying anything worth hearing or because what we are saying is so filled with God\u2019s Word that it is hard to hear and remain unchanged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Who are the outsiders beyond your community which you resist including in God\u2019s care?<\/li>\n<li>Can you remember a time when expressing God\u2019s love for all people caused you to be excluded or rejected?<\/li>\n<li>Many persons say the church is losing members because it is like a boring speaker who talks too much and never listens?\u00a0 Do you think that is true?\u00a0 How could the church listen to those beyond its fellowship?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Activity Suggestions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Have your group role play the scene at the synagogue described in Luke 4.\u00a0 In order to capture the full drama you will need to expand the gospel reading to include verses 16-20.\u00a0 Invite the group to imagine how the mood in the synagogue would have changed as Jesus read and then offered an expansive interpretation of the text from Isaiah.\u00a0 You might want to cast the scene to include Jesus\u2019 family, the leader of the synagogue, older folks who had known Jesus as a boy, some of his peers growing up, and members of the Jewish community.\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0Place a chalice and paten in the center of the meeting space.\u00a0 Give participants a number of small slips of paper printed with \u201cThe body and blood of Christ are given for_________.\u201d\u00a0 Ask participants to write in the name of those persons or groups they find hardest to love.\u00a0 Invite them to consider both large categories and the individuals with whom they interact daily.\u00a0 When all have filled out as many slips as they wish, put all the slips on the paten or in the chalice.\u00a0 Talk about why it is hard to love some people and how imagining them at the Lord\u2019s table might change our attitude toward them.\u00a0 End with the prayer below.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Closing Prayer<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Lord, who always listened to the longings of those you met, open our ears, that we may compassionately \u00a0hear the hurts and needs of all whom we encounter this week.\u00a0 May no person, through our words or deeds, feel excluded from your love.\u00a0 In the name of Him who broke down the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile, we
