{"id":10913,"date":"2026-05-06T10:00:50","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T15:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=10913"},"modified":"2026-05-06T07:14:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T12:14:17","slug":"may-10-2026-ordinary-household-acts-of-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/may-10-2026-ordinary-household-acts-of-love\/","title":{"rendered":"May 10, 2026 &#8211; Ordinary, Household Acts of Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><b>Prepare:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Gospel of John has a very different character than the other three Gospels (Mark, Matthew, and Luke, which are called \u201cthe Synoptic Gospels\u201d). Whereas the Synoptic Gospels tell many similar stories about the life and ministry of Jesus, John emphasizes the mystic spirituality of Jesus\u2019 life and mission. Together all four Gospels combine into a wonderful overlapping kaleidoscopic vision of Christ. The author of John especially wants their audience to understand that Jesus <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> God, and (for better or worse) they go about it with very circuitous, and sometimes confusing, language. Remember that this text is from an ancient spiritual document; it\u2019s okay that it\u2019s confusing to us sometimes!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In today\u2019s text, Jesus is speaking to his disciples in the upper room on the night before his crucifixion. This is part of what\u2019s called his \u201cfarewell discourses\u201d. Think of it as Jesus saying goodbye to his friends, and they\u2019re saying, \u201cno, don\u2019t go!\u201d He\u2019s comforting, preparing, and instructing them for what happens next. In this passage, Jesus promises that the Spirit of God will be with them. He reassures them with ways to know that even after he\u2019s gone, they are still part of what God is doing in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Opening Exercise:<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Think about people that you love, people who you are in regular, close relationships with. It might be family, roommates, friends, etc. List three of them specifically.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What things do you do for them that you wouldn\u2019t normally do for a stranger?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you have to do those things, or do you choose to?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What changes about your relationship when you do these things (or don\u2019t do them)?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Text Read Aloud:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2014%3A15-21&amp;version=NRSVUE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">John 14:15-21<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><b>Ordinary, Household Acts of Love<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I don\u2019t think anyone really likes being told what to do, do you? (seriously, do you?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even worse is when someone tries to leverage you by saying things like \u201cif you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> loved me, you\u2019d [fill in the blank]\u201d It\u2019s bad enough they\u2019re telling you to do something you maybe didn\u2019t want to do, without them adding an extra layer of manipulation to it. I hope that this is a scenario you\u2019ve only seen play out in movies and you\u2019re not actually having to navigate your own Mean Girls\/Regina George situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Without context, this text from John 14 might sound like Jesus is being manipulative. But when Jesus says \u201cif you love me\u2026\u201d, he means it in a very different way. God\u2019s love isn\u2019t needy or insecure, it\u2019s the opposite! The love of God is secure and giving; it builds us up, supports us, encourages us, and is absolutely steadfast. God\u2019s love is the foundation of all creation; it is our source, our origin, our road, and our destination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Knowing that, it\u2019s better to read the start of this passage basically as the inverse of how Regina George says it: Jesus is saying \u201cif YOU want to be sure that you love me, you\u2019ll know it because you\u2019ll be keeping my commandments.\u201d How do we know we love people around us? We feel it, and we help out \u2013 around the house, we take care of our responsibilities, we pick them up from the airport, we help them move, we share meals, we make them food, we look after them when they\u2019re sick, etc. That\u2019s the stuff of loving relationships that we can look to and be confident that we\u2019re doing our part.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #ffffff\"><b>Ordinary, Household Acts of Love<\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jesus is comforting his disciples here who are terrified because they know that he\u2019s about to be taken away from them. They\u2019ve been with him for years, and they\u2019re scared about life without him. Jesus is saying: \u201cit\u2019s going to be ok, and you\u2019ll know that it\u2019s ok because when you follow my commandments, you\u2019ll experience the love and presence of God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you remember the story about the lawyer who asked Jesus what the greatest commandment is? Jesus said: \u201c\u2018Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">38 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the first and greatest commandment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">39 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And the second is like it: \u2018Love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019\u201d (Matt. 22:34-40) That story doesn\u2019t appear in John\u2019s Gospel, but Jesus says something similar just before today\u2019s passage; in chapter 13, he says \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">34 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">35 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When we love someone, it\u2019s so much easier to let our lives be interrupted by them. It\u2019s like we don\u2019t even need to be told what to do; acts of love just flow out of us. Jesus calls us to extend that to not just our friends, but to all our neighbors, and even our enemies. That\u2019s how we\u2019ll experience the presence of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Reflective Questions:<\/b><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The presence of God can be hard to \u201cget\u201d if you\u2019re not sure what to pay attention to. It\u2019s like recognising an ingredient in a recipe: once it\u2019s pointed out to you, you\u2019ll taste it. You\u2019ll probably start to notice it everywhere, actually. Jesus says that when we obey his commandments (i.e. love), we\u2019ll experience the presence of God. Do you have a story about that?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You might have heard about some US legislators wanting to put the 10 Commandments up in schools. Without getting into the weeds of whether that\u2019s a good idea or not, how do you think the conversation around this idea might be different if it were these \u201cgreatest commandments\u201d instead?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEverybody wants a revolution, but nobody wants to do the dishes.\u201d This quote is varyingly attributed to Dorothy Day and\/or Tish Harrison Warren. What does it mean to you?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><b>Closing Activity:<\/b><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The greatest commandment from Matthew 22 has three parts: Love God, Love your neighbor, Love yourself. In John 14:15-21, Jesus says that when we do this, we\u2019ll experience the presence of God.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make a dot point list of three things you can do to obey each part of this commandment. Think about things you can do today, and things that have a longer-term scope.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What stands out to you on these lists?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What parts are easy? Which parts are difficult?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Which one will you start with immediately?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Listen to or sing a hymn together, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lyqLzAnfqa4?si=GmPoIA0yj3eC0rqX\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey Will Know We are Christians By Our Love\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><b>Final Prayer:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(take a deep breath and exhale)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Holy One, we trust that you tell us the truth. Loving people can be really hard; loving ourselves can be even harder sometimes. You know this; and we trust that you will help us. We want to know you better and follow you more closely. We trust that when you say you\u2019ll fill us with your Spirit, you\u2019ll do it. So, help us love one another, help us love ourselves, and help us love you; help us recognize you in the midst of it all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank you for loving us, and thank you for making your home with us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Christ\u2019s name, Amen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Bio:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rev.
