The scene feels celebratory, but it\u2019s actually layered with tension. Jesus enters the city not on a war horse nor in a display of political power, but on a donkey. In doing so, he fulfills the prophecy from Zechariah 9:9. This signals a different kind of kingship: one rooted in humility and solidarity with ordinary people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Jesus enters, the crowds respond with enthusiasm. They spread cloaks on the road, wave branches, and shout \u201cHosanna,\u201d which means \u201csave us.\u201d This is both praise and protest, a cry for deliverance. Many in the crowds likely expected Jesus to overthrow Roman rule and restore political power to Israel. Their understanding of \u201csalvation\u201d was shaped by their lived oppression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet, the kind of salvation Jesus brings does not align with their expectations. His path doesn\u2019t lead to a throne of dominance, but to the cross; and the same crowds that shout \u201cHosanna\u201d will, within days, fall silent or turn away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This passage invites us to consider how we recognize, or fail to recognize, God at work. It challenges assumptions about power, leadership, and what it means to be saved. It also raises an important question for today: What kind of change are we hoping for, and are we open to it if it looks different than we imagined?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Opening Exercise\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t4qXXNnjGHQ\">Watch this video about a community organization in Minneapolis called Singing Resistance.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As you watch, pay attention to what you hear in their voices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are they carrying?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are they hoping for?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the video, ask:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What emotions did you notice?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What do you think they are longing for or crying out for?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where do you hear something like \u201cHosanna\u201d in this?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Transition to the text<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: In Matthew 21, the crowd is also crying out, but the word they use is \u2018Hosanna,\u2019 literally: save us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Text Read Aloud\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?passage=Matthew+21:1-11\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Matthew 21:1\u201311\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><b>Hosanna: When Salvation Looks Different<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It looks like a parade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s movement, noise, energy. People are lining the road, waving branches, shouting. Cloaks are thrown down like a makeshift red carpet. The crowd is caught up in the moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHosanna!\u201d they cry.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSave us!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is what hope looks like when it spills out into the street.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But look closer.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jesus isn\u2019t riding in like the kind of king they know. There\u2019s no armor, no horse, no show of force. He comes on a donkey, easy to miss if you weren\u2019t paying attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And still, they cheer.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They cheer because they believe this, this will change everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The crowd has expectations. They are living under occupation. They are tired, burdened, longing for freedom. And here comes Jesus: healer, teacher, miracle-worker. Surely, this is the one who will fix it. Surely, this is the one who will take power, restore order, and make things right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But unbeknownst to them, Jesus is not entering Jerusalem to take power. He is entering to give himself away.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s the tension of this story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The same voices shouting \u201cHosanna!\u201d are filled with hope. But, it\u2019s a hope shaped by their understanding of how the world works. Power defeats power. Strength overcomes strength. Kings conquer. But Jesus redefines all of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He comes in humility and vulnerability. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He comes in peace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And the kind of salvation Jesus brings won\u2019t look like what they imagined. That\u2019s what makes this story so close to us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We also carry expectations. We pray for change, for healing, for justice, for things to be made right. And often, we imagine what that should look like. We imagine how God should act, how quickly things should shift, how clearly victory should appear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #ffffff\"><b>Hosanna: When Salvation Looks Different<\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But what if God is already moving, and it just doesn\u2019t look like what we expected?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What if salvation doesn\u2019t come through domination?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What if salvation doesn\u2019t come through force?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What if salvation doesn\u2019t come through winning?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead, it breaks in through love that refuses to let go, through relentless presence, or through a commitment to wading through trenches together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The crowd saw Jesus.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But they didn\u2019t fully SEE Jesus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And maybe that\u2019s where we begin too.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning to see again.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning to let go of the version of God we\u2019ve constructed.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning to recognize that sometimes the most powerful thing God does\u2026 is easy to overlook.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hosanna still means \u201csave us.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The question is: are we ready for the kind of saving that actually comes?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Reflection Questions\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What stands out to you about how Jesus enters Jerusalem in this story? What are the people doing, and how are they responding?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why do you think the crowd expected something different from Jesus? What does this tell us about how people understand power or leadership?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What does Jesus\u2019 choice to ride a donkey (instead of a horse) say about the kind of king he is?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where in your life might you be expecting God to act in a certain way? What would it look like to be open to something different?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><b>Closing Activity\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hand out a small piece of paper to each person and invite them to write one word or short phrase they would shout \u201cHosanna\u201d about. What do they need saving from or for right now?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When they\u2019re ready, invite them to fold their paper, holding their words with care and privacy, and place it on an altar or in another shared sacred space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From there, you have a couple of options depending on the trust and comfort level of your group. You may choose to read some of the prayers aloud, being mindful to protect what feels tender or personal. After each one, the group can respond together: \u201cGod, hear our cry.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or, if it feels more appropriate, you can offer a few collective petitions shaped by what surfaced in your conversation, again inviting the group to respond: \u201cGod, hear our cry.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Final Prayer<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jesus,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you come to us in ways we don\u2019t always expect.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You meet us in humility and presence.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Help us to see you clearly.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Help us to let go of what we think salvation should look like.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And open us to the kind of love that changes everything.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hosanna.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Save us.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Bio of Author\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emily Harkins is the Lead Pastor and Founding Developer of The Dwelling in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a community rooted in belonging, dignity, and shared life alongside neighbors experiencing homelessness.
