{"id":10205,"date":"2024-01-02T09:18:55","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T14:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=10205"},"modified":"2024-01-02T10:19:47","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T15:19:47","slug":"january-7-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/january-7-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"January 7, 2024&#8211;Tear It Open!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Alex Zuber, Harrisonburg, VA<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>Warm-up Question<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>What is the most urgent or pressing thing in your life right now?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(It could be a good thing or a challenge)<\/p>\n<h4><b>Tear It Open!<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>For all the build-up, Christmas just flies by too fast!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some of us (me included) may have been singing along with Mariah Carey\u2019s &#8220;All I Want for Christmas is You&#8221; since November 1, but Christmas is still over too soon.<\/p>\n<p>I know I could slow down and savor the moment more, but I\u2019m always far too delighted by the frenzied rush of Christmas morning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn\u2019t seem to matter what age I am, when I get a package wrapped in bright, shiny, joyful paper, I just want to tear it open as fast as I can!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Whether you\u2019re in a family that has everyone open their presents all at once, or one where. you patiently wait to open one present at a time, while everyone watches, there\u2019s a magical thrill to tearing open the wrapping paper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10219 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128-467x350.jpg 467w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/iStock-1043022128.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As joyful as this practice is each year, I always feel a bit of sadness as I carry huge garbage bags loaded with Christmas wrapping paper out to the street for the trash collection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not just because Christmas is over, but because this joyful tradition is inherently wasteful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/brightly.eco\/blog\/holiday-waste-generation-and-prevention\">site Brightly<\/a> says, &#8220;The U.S. is estimated to produce 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper every year, and half of that\u2014approximately 2.3 million pounds\u2014winds up in landfills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just the paper in those trash bags! \u201cRibbons and bows are a problem, too: If every family reused two feet of ribbon, it would save enough to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lbre.stanford.edu\/pssistanford-recycling\/frequently-asked-questions\/frequently-asked-questions-holiday-waste-prevention?ref=affiliatesection%23:~:text=If%2520every%2520family%2520reused%2520just,bow%2520around%2520the%2520entire%2520planet.\">tie a bow around the planet<\/a>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It pulls at my heart to balance \u00a0this joyful tradition of tearing open presents with the deep call I feel to better steward creation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps we can have both.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We can all take simple steps to find eco-friendly paper, reuse some paper and bags, wrap more creatively with repurposed paper, and look into reusable cloth alternatives.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>What is your practice of present opening on Christmas morning? You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Particularly as we read the Gospel of Mark, I can\u2019t help but think of the urgency of tearing open gifts on Christmas, because Mark is a gospel that gets down to business quickly!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Christmas? Nope.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Magi and a star? No. Jesus as a child in the temple? Nah.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mark doesn\u2019t have time for such things!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our gospel writer launches into the gospel with urgency, saying simply \u201cThe beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ,&#8221; and then doesn\u2019t let up for 16 chapters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(Even the Easter story includes \u00a0no original post-resurrection appearances by Jesus!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It just ends.)<\/p>\n<p>In Mark, Jesus is on the move, and Jesus is in action.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s teaching, healing, casting out demons, and proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is near!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Before this happens, John the Baptizer appears, offering a baptism of repentance \u00a0and proclaiming the coming of one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Jesus comes to John and receives this baptism for himself in solidarity with the people, and <i>just as<\/i> he emerges from the water, the heavens are \u201ctorn apart and the Spirit descends like a dove upon him.\u201d Did you hear that?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The heavens are \u201ctorn apart\u201d, not merely \u201copened\u201d as they are in Matthew and Luke.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a dramatic and urgent scene!<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is always getting into the action, and Mark is particular about showing that God\u2014just like a kid of any age on Christmas morning\u2014is tearing open the heavens like wrapping paper to declare the belovedness of Jesus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And you too, are beloved!<\/p>\n<p>As John offered a baptism of repentance, we receive the forgiveness of sins through our baptisms. \u00a0We are washed in the Holy Spirit through the love of Jesus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God proclaims over the waters of our baptism that we are beloved as well.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God is indeed pleased to call us God\u2019s children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And this baptized life calls us to walk with both a spirit of repentance, \u00a0which transforms our hearts, and \u00a0a spirit of \u00a0joy and hope for all creation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Just as we can rethink the joyful practice of Christmas paper to better care for our world, so our baptism calls us to live into our belovedness by tearing apart the ways of sin which divide us from one another, and obscure the presence of God.<\/p>\n<p>God is urgently, joyfully tearing open the heavens to be among us, to proclaim belovedness over creation through the joy and hope we share in loving one another.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dear one, YOU are God\u2019s beloved, and with YOU God is well pleased!<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Baptismal candidates declare \u201cI renounce them!\u201d to the powers of evil. What evil(s) do you renounce? (Mark 1:9-11)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus\u2019 baptism was the beginning of his ministry; how was your baptism the beginning of yours? (Mark 1:10-11)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a to-do list this week, and then sort it by what is most urgent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then read the five points of the Baptismal Covenant, below.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Discuss with a friend how these things can be done through each of the urgent tasks you\u2019ve identified.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If it\u2019s hard to imagine these things reflecting your baptismal covenant, how can you reprioritize, or reimagine these activities as an extension of your baptismal calling?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(<i>Covenant: to live among God<\/i>\u2019<i>s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord<\/i>\u2019<i>s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth<\/i>)<\/li>\n<li>Baptism is our adoption into God\u2019s family as God\u2019s child, and God is \u201cvery pleased<i>\u201d<\/i>\u00a0(Mark 1:11) that this is so.\u00a0 As a way of testing how your life would be affected if you always had a reminder of that gracious truth, take an index card and write the words of verse 11, starting with your own first name, \u201c_____, You are my beloved child;\u00a0 with you I am well pleased.\u201d\u00a0 Fold this index card and carry it around with you all week, in a pocket or purse where you will come across it often.\u00a0 Then pay attention to how hearing this word from God \u2013 a reminder of your adoption \u2013 changes the way you think about yourself and the world around you. Stir up in us the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen.
