{"id":636,"date":"2011-10-26T13:41:07","date_gmt":"2011-10-26T19:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/peacenotwalls\/?p=636"},"modified":"2011-10-26T13:41:07","modified_gmt":"2011-10-26T19:41:07","slug":"four-christian-denominations-urge-palestinian-membership-in-the-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/elcasumud\/four-christian-denominations-urge-palestinian-membership-in-the-un\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Christian Denominations Urge Palestinian Membership in the UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four Christian denominations have issued a statement\u00a0in support of\u00a0the Palestinian bid for membership in the\u00a0UN.\u00a0 Officials from the Presbyterian Church,\u00a0the United Church of Christ, The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society\u00a0signed the statement, which\u00a0also urges negotiations as a necessary step to resolution of the conflict.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From the statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We understand the view expressed by United States and Israeli representatives that international recognition by the UN is no substitute for two-party, two-state negotiations.\u00a0But the reverse is also true, given the prolonged and undeniable failure of the negotiations between parties of vastly different power. Membership for Palestine does not preclude either the need for or the possibility of negotiations. Outstanding issues including an end to the occupation, final borders, the status of Jerusalem, settlements, and the right of return would remain to be resolved through negotiation.
