{"id":380,"date":"2011-06-29T15:45:23","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T21:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/peacenotwalls\/?p=380"},"modified":"2011-06-29T16:08:02","modified_gmt":"2011-06-29T22:08:02","slug":"us-senate-passes-resolution-vowing-to-cut-aid-if-palestinians-pursue-statehood-via-the-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/elcasumud\/us-senate-passes-resolution-vowing-to-cut-aid-if-palestinians-pursue-statehood-via-the-un\/","title":{"rendered":"US Senate passes resolution vowing to cut aid if Palestinians pursue statehood via the UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"US Senate threatens to cut aid to Palestinians\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/news\/diplomacy-defense\/u-s-senate-passes-resolution-threatening-to-suspend-aid-to-palestinians-1.370341\">The US Senate has passed resolution 185, <\/a>a move that would cut funding to the Palestinian Authority if it pursues its current announced intention to seek statehood through the United Nations.\u00a0 The Senate also called on President Obama to veto any such movement if it came to the security council and called for a review of the Hamas-Fatah unity agreement.\u00a0\u00a0 The resolution, which was co-sponsored by 87 senators, also calls for the Palestinian unity government to \u201cpublicly and formally forswear terrorism, accept Israel&#8217;s right to exist, and reaffirm previous agreements made with the Government of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Palestinian efforts to gain recognition of a state outside direct negotiations demonstrates absence of a good faith commitment to peace negotiations, and will have implications for continued United States aid, the resolution said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Senator Henry Reid, after the vote, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cthe United States of America will not give money to terrorists bent on the destruction of the State of Israel.
