Palestinian Lutheran soccer star Honey Thaljieh, changing attitudes in Palestine about women's sports and exploring "sports diplomacy."<\/p><\/div>\n

“It\u2019s not only about playing football. It\u2019s about living in Bethlehem, the city of peace, and delivering the message that we are humans and that we have rights.\u00a0 Through football, we can change the world because football is a language that everyone understands.”<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0“We have no where else to go and nowhere\u00a0to put our energies.\u00a0 We are just playing with our souls and spiritual abilities. It\u2019s because we are strong, we are Palestinian, we face a lot of difficulties. We want to be something.”<\/em><\/p>\n

So says Honey\u00a0Thaljieh, a graduate of the ELCJHL Lutheran schools “who\u00a0has emerged to revolutionize Palestinian attitudes about women\u2019s sports and has taken up what one might call sports diplomacy, making it all the way to the White House with Hillary Clinton,”\u00a0 explains ELCA missionaries\u00a0Pastor Fred and Gloria Strickert in their blog, Walk in Jerusalem.\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n
