{"id":249,"date":"2011-05-20T13:35:52","date_gmt":"2011-05-20T19:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/peacenotwalls\/?p=249"},"modified":"2011-05-20T20:28:31","modified_gmt":"2011-05-21T02:28:31","slug":"president-obamas-speech-on-the-middle-east","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/elcasumud\/president-obamas-speech-on-the-middle-east\/","title":{"rendered":"President Obama&#8217;s Speech on the Middle East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama gave a long-awaited <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2011\/05\/19\/text-of-obamas-speech-on-the-middle-east\/\">speech on the Middle East on Thursday<\/a>, May 19, that brought immedate criticism\u00a0from pro-Israeli groups and GOP presidential hopefuls.\u00a0\u00a0Nothing he said was really\u00a0new except perhaps that Palestine should have an international border with Jordan, which is in conflict with Israel&#8217;s plan to have a militarized buffer zone between Jordan and Israel.\u00a0 The rest of the speech was, by some standards, very pro-Israeli, emphasizing our shared values and\u00a0long-term commitment to Israel and its security.\u00a0 Prime Minister Netanyahu, however,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pmo.gov.il\/PMOEng\/Communication\/Spokesman\/2011\/05\/spoketguva190511.htm\">responded <\/a>with a number of things he wanted to push\u00a0President Obama on, calling the 1967 borders &#8220;indefensible.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Rev. Mark Hanson, presiding bishop of the ELCA, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Who-We-Are\/Our-Three-Expressions\/Churchwide-Organization\/Communication-Services\/News\/Releases.aspx?a=5115\">in a statement responding to the\u00a0president&#8217;s speech,<\/a> said it resonated with ELCA statements and values.\u00a0 In the statement, Bishop Hanson also advocated for\u00a0a shared Jerusalem as the capital of both states with\u00a0equal access to all Christians, Muslims and Jews, and\u00a0affirmed: &#8220;the right to self-determination so that the God-given dignity of all people is respected and recognized.
