Ecumenical organizations warn Israel\u2019s planned action\u00a0would\u00a0further damage hopes for justice and\u00a0lasting\u00a0peace<\/h2>\n

(LWI) –\u00a0Leading ecumenical organizations are\u00a0urging\u00a0the international community to oppose Israel\u2019s planned annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank.<\/p>\n

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF),\u00a0together with\u00a0the World Council of Churches (WCC), the\u00a0World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) and the Action by\u00a0Churches Together (ACT)\u00a0Alliance\u00a0issued a statement\u00a0on 29 June\u00a0calling for an end to the occupation and\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0resumption of dialogue to build lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.<\/p>\n

The Israeli government has said it plans to effectively annex parts of the West Bank by extending\u00a0its\u00a0sovereignty\u00a0to areas that contain Jewish settlements, as well as parts of the Jordan valley.\u00a0The settlements are considered illegal under international law and\u00a0an obstacle to a proposed \u2018two state solution\u2019 in the region.<\/p>\n

The ecumenical organizations say the planned annexation \u201cis in direct violation of international law\u201d and would\u00a0further\u00a0threaten\u00a0hopes for justice and peace in the region.They warn it\u00a0would\u00a0\u201cundermine even more the rights of Palestinians, reducing their mobility, their access to land and livelihoods, to adequate infrastructure and basic services,\u201d as well as\u00a0increasing\u00a0forced displacement and\u00a0putting at risk access by\u00a0humanitarian organizations.<\/p>\n

The organizations pledge to continue working for peace in the Holy Land, insisting that \u201cpeace can never be unilaterally imposed or achieved by violent means.\u201d<\/p>\n
