{"id":1841,"date":"2013-04-23T10:51:45","date_gmt":"2013-04-23T16:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/peacenotwalls\/?p=1841"},"modified":"2013-04-23T17:54:40","modified_gmt":"2013-04-23T23:54:40","slug":"elca-leaders-urge-obama-to-pursue-diplomatic-solutions-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/elcasumud\/elca-leaders-urge-obama-to-pursue-diplomatic-solutions-in-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"Join ELCA leaders and urge Obama to pursue diplomatic solutions in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a letter to President Obama on April 12, ELCA leaders urged Obama to \u201ctake steps to find new avenues toward peace and resolve the war through diplomatic means\u201d in Syria. \u00a0In their letter, the ELCA presiding bishop and four synod bishops offered their appreciation for Obama\u2019s chosen \u201cpath of restraint,\u201d particularly as the bishops have heard louder calls in recent weeks \u201cfor the United States to provide lethal military assistance to the Syrian opposition,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe volatility of the conflict in Syria continues to lead to violence, suffering, death and people fleeing for safety,\u201d said the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the ELCA, in an interview.\u00a0\u201cAcknowledging the conflict&#8217;s complexity should not cause us to silence our voices or refrain from acts of compassion,\u201d said Hanson. \u201cThe letter to President Obama calls for restraint in actions by the United States that could escalate the violence and for renewed efforts to find a resolution that will become a foundation for a lasting peace and a Syrian society that experiences justice and reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hanson said that through the ELCA\u2019s partnership with The Lutheran World Federation, this church \u201cis aiding Syrian refugees who have fled to Jordan.\u201d\u00a0The ELCA continues to participate in humanitarian assistance in partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, along with other Lutheran companion churches and partner organizations.
