\"\"<\/a>Jane Harries, a Quaker from the United Kingdom,\u00a0has recently returned from a three–month stint\u00a0in the West Bank, working with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). <\/a>She was\u00a0based in Yanoun, a small Palestinian village near Nablus, living with its people and observing how they relate to Israelis from nearby settlement communities and the IDF.\u00a0\u00a0Listen to her 10-minute podcast <\/a>with journalist\u00a0Roy Jenkins of the BBC about her work there as part of this\u00a0ecumenical programme.<\/p>\n

This program\u00a0came under attack recently by some in the UK who described the program as biased against Israel.\u00a0 Despite the controversy, the Church of England voted to support the program and others working for peace and justice in the Holy Land.\u00a0 The short motion commits the Church\u00a0to support: the work of EAPPI (including making \u201cuse of the experience of returning participants\u201d), aid agencies working with Palestinians, \u201cIsraelis and Palestinians in all organisations working for justice and peace in the area\u201d (citing Parents Circle \u2013 Family Forum specifically), and \u201corganisations that work to ensure\u201d the \u201ccontinuing presence [of Christian Palestinians] in the Holy Land\u201d.<\/p>\n

The ELCA has sponsored\u00a0many Ecumenical Accompaniers since the program began in 2002, when the heads of churches in Jerusalem asked the World Council of Churches and churches all over the world to support their Christian sisters and brothers in Palestine and\u00a0act in the face of increasing violence and the extended occupation in Israel\/Palestine.\u00a0<\/p>\n
