{"id":1115,"date":"2012-03-07T12:22:34","date_gmt":"2012-03-07T18:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/peacenotwalls\/?p=1115"},"modified":"2012-03-07T12:22:34","modified_gmt":"2012-03-07T18:22:34","slug":"thirty-top-muslim-christian-and-jewish-faith-leaders-say-israeli-palestinian-peace-more-urgent-than-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/elcasumud\/thirty-top-muslim-christian-and-jewish-faith-leaders-say-israeli-palestinian-peace-more-urgent-than-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"Thirty top Muslim, Christian and Jewish faith leaders say Israeli-Palestinian peace more urgent than ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty top Muslim, Christian and Jewish faith leaders who form the National Interreligious Leadership Initiative for Peace in the Middle East (NILI) affirmed Thursday, March 1, that the two-state-solution is more important than ever to achieve in the current conflicted context of\u00a0the Middle East.\u00a0 Appreciating that \u201cthe months ahead, leading up to U.S.national elections, present a special challenge,\u201d they urged \u201ccandidates not to use any rhetoric that could make prospects for peace more problematic.\u00a0\u00a0 As Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious leaders, we strongly caution candidates to <em>do no harm <\/em>to chances for a two-state Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, NILI\u00a0calls on the Administration, the Congress and candidates for office to support the following steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Address warnings to\u00a0both sides to\u00a0prevent violence, and\u00a0undertake diplomatic efforts, in coordination with the Quartet, to help maintain a\u00a0durable, effective ceasefire; all attacks on civilians must immediately end;<\/li>\n<li>Continue to support Palestinian state-building and economic development capacity, including immediately lifting the Congressional hold on humanitarian aid;<\/li>\n<li>Support Palestinian efforts to form a government capable of representing the West Bank and Gaza on the essential conditions that it agree to halt violence, respect all existing agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and negotiate a two-state peace agreement with Israel;<\/li>\n<li>UrgeIsraelto halt all settlement expansion, including inEast Jerusalem; and<\/li>\n<li>Urge a resumption of negotiations for a two-state peace agreement, based on U.N.
