\u201c<\/span>When the day of Pentecost had\u00a0<\/span>come<\/span>\u00a0they were all together in one\u00a0<\/span>place<\/span>\u00a0.<\/span>\u00a0. \u00a0.<\/span>\u00a0Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 Acts 2<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

May 25th<\/span>\u00a0marked the 5-year\u00a0<\/span>Angelversary<\/span>\u00a0of the murder of George Floyd. That Sunday evening, as part of the\u00a0<\/span>Rise and Remember Festival<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and at the invitation of the\u00a0<\/span>ELCA Racial Justice Ministries<\/span><\/a>, I joined a number of you for a fabulous concert featuring\u00a0<\/span>Sounds of Blackness<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and a moving vigil. We gathered\u00a0beforehand on the steps of\u00a0<\/span>Calvary Lutheran Church<\/span><\/a>, just a block south of George Floyd Square. ELCA Racial Justice Director Jennifer DeLeon grounded us for the evening, reminding us that people come to this event holding both memories and hopes, lament and a call to action. If you haven\u2019t been to George Floyd Square lately (or ever), consider making a\u00a0<\/span>pilgrimage and ask for a community guide<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to share this sacred space with you or your group.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The sun was low when the concert ended. Theologian and community leader\u00a0<\/span>Jeanelle Austin<\/span><\/a>\u00a0stepped onto the stage to prepare us for the vigil. Volunteers quietly distributed candles. Now, let\u2019s be clear: These were not the smaller candles we often hold during a Christmas Eve candlelight service, candles that flicker through a few verses of Silent Night and are soon extinguished. Instead, these were large tapers, ready for the long duration of the vigil and all it would include.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Austin described the plan:\u00a0<\/span>With c<\/span>andles lit,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Brass Solidarity<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0would lead us\u00a0<\/span>north\u00a0<\/span>past the spot where George Floyd was\u00a0<\/span>murdered<\/span>, past exhibits and memorials filled with the names and stories of\u00a0<\/span>BIPOC individuals\u00a0<\/span>from around the country\u00a0<\/span>who\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>been\u00a0<\/span>victims of systemic racism and violence<\/span>. We<\/span>\u00a0would<\/span>\u00a0turn w<\/span>est\u00a0<\/span>and go\u00a0<\/span>a block to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Say Their Names Cemetery<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0w<\/span>here<\/span>\u00a0over a hundred\u00a0<\/span>symbolic\u00a0<\/span>headstones\u00a0<\/span>bear<\/span>\u00a0the names<\/span>\u00a0of Emmett Till, George Floyd, Philando Castile,<\/span>\u00a0Jamar Clark<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and dozens more<\/span>. A<\/span>nticipating the moment, A<\/span>ustin\u00a0<\/span>explained that we should<\/span>\u00a0move down into the cemetery and find a headst<\/span>one where we\u00a0<\/span><\/span>w<\/span><\/span><\/span>ould \u201chold space\u201d as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>youth and young adult musicians\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0Kamoinge Strings<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0played\u00a0<\/span>several<\/span>\u00a0pieces,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>then\u00a0<\/span>we\u00a0<\/span>would\u00a0<\/span>close with a\u00a0<\/span>prayer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Holding space.\u00a0<\/span>As the sun set and night cam<\/span>e<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0hundreds of us\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ettled in<\/span>\u00a0around the<\/span>\u00a0headstones<\/span>. S<\/span>ome<\/span>\u00a0peo<\/span>ple\u00a0<\/span>st<\/span>ood, some sat<\/span>\u00a0in the cool grass<\/span>. C<\/span>andle flames flicker<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0and wax<\/span>\u00a0dri<\/span>pp<\/span>ed<\/span>. M<\/span>usic\u00a0<\/span>swell<\/span>ed<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It was beautiful an<\/span>d incredibly<\/span>\u00a0sad all at once.\u00a0<\/span>I held space by the stone of a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>17-year-old<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0named\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Jordan Davi<\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0who was killed in Jacksonville, Florida<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0in 2012.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Holding space means creating\u00a0a safe \u2014 yet also brave\u00a0\u2014 environment in which people, with all our emotions,\u00a0can be present and remember. I keep thinking of exercise classes and how they remind me to engage my muscles as I move this way or that. Holding space means figuratively engaging our muscles. It takes time. It makes us tired. It can be uncomfortable.\u00a0If we do it\u00a0well, we\u2019ll grow stronger, we\u2019ll gain endurance. I find that holding space is often profoundly moving. It\u2019s holy work.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In times like these, the temptation is strong to move through these anniversaries\u00a0\u2013 this pain, this trauma\u00a0\u2013 passively, without really engaging. Holding space invites us into the vulnerable recognition that the world is not yet as it should be, and we are called to be present, engaged, honest to the grief and all the moment holds, and ready to be part of the change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This Sunday we\u2019ll celebrate Pentecost and the Holy Spirit\u2019s movement. We believe that love is stronger than hate, that life is stronger than death, and that together, by the Holy Spirit\u2019s power, we can be part of God\u2019s new creation. That was my prayer as we held space with the sun setting and the candles flickering. That is my prayer today.
