The factors that propelled the March, including ending racial segregation, fighting for economic justice and securing voting rights, remain as urgent and relevant as ever.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"pquote\">\n<blockquote><p>Racism\u2014a mix of power, privilege, and prejudice\u2014is sin, a violation of God\u2019s intention for humanity. The resulting racial, ethnic, or cultural barriers deny the truth that all people are God\u2019s creatures and, therefore, persons of dignity. Racism fractures and fragments both church and society. <small>\u2013 from ELCA social statement <em>Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity, and Culture<\/em>, p. 4<\/small><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2023\/08\/230825-marchonwashington-jdphoto.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7152\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2023\/08\/230825-marchonwashington-jdphoto-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The struggles of the past continue to surface in challenges of the present. The legacy of segregation persists, reminding us that the fight for equality is far from over. The enduring <a href=\"https:\/\/download.elca.org\/ELCA%20Resource%20Repository\/JSSHOAhousing.pdf\">outcome of redlining<\/a>, a systemic practice that denies access to loans, insurance and other financial benefits to residents of mostly BIPOC communities, continues to fragment our society along racial lines.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, although the passing of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 represented progress, we find ourselves confronted with a disconcerting reality: a surge of legislative efforts aimed at curtailing voting rights that disproportionately affect BIPOC communities continuing to uphold racial divisions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lwv.org\/blog\/common-voting-restrictions-are-more-harmful-you-might-think\">According to the League of Women Voters<\/a>, \u201cIn 2023, at least 322 bills restricting voting access were introduced in state legislatures nationwide.\u201d This alarming trend underscores the need to draw a direct line from the struggles of the past to the challenges of the present, emphasizing the crucial importance of understanding history and rallying against injustice to ensure a more equitable future for all.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"pquote\">\n<blockquote><p>Vision breaks through brokenness. We are one in Christ. As the body of Christ, we are free to live out our connectedness with each other. Promises are kept when vision is communicated in word and deed, and members are captured by it. <small>\u2013 from <em>Freed in Christ<\/em>, p. 5<\/small><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mow2023.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7153\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2023\/08\/230825-marchonwashington2023-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>In our church, we continue to work towards living out the commitments we made in 1993 when we passed our social statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/download.elca.org\/ELCA%20Resource%20Repository\/race_ethnicity_culture_statement.pdf\"><em>Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity, and Culture<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe Church that confesses Christ in public demonstrates its commitment through involvement in public life\u2014globally and locally, nationally and in neighborhoods,\u201d it reads (p. 6). It continues: \u201cThis church will support legislation, ordinances, and resolutions that guarantee to all persons equally: civil rights, including full protection of the law and redress under the law of discriminatory practices; and to all citizens, the right to vote\u201d (p. 7)<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, we have supported and will continue to advocate for the passage of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021 and other similar legislation.
