{"id":708,"date":"2011-07-08T11:28:03","date_gmt":"2011-07-08T17:28:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/disasterresponse\/?p=708"},"modified":"2011-08-12T12:55:47","modified_gmt":"2011-08-12T18:55:47","slug":"field-report-from-minot-north-dakota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/disasterresponse\/field-report-from-minot-north-dakota\/","title":{"rendered":"Field Report from Minot, North Dakota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sisters and brothers in Christ,<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been working in Minot, North Dakota this week.\u00a0 Historic flooding brought the Souris River here over its banks, defeating levee attempts and devastating Minot and other communities like Burlington.\u00a0 Over 5,000 homes and hundreds of businesses are flooded in these communities.\u00a0 This flood has been very slow to recede, with water still over the first floors of many structures, and as such, hundreds of homes and businesses will probably need to be condemned and torn down.\u00a0 A boil order remains in effect for the Minot water system for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_711\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2011\/07\/christ_minot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-711\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-711\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2011\/07\/christ_minot-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/disasterresponse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2011\/07\/christ_minot-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/disasterresponse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2011\/07\/christ_minot.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pastor David Maxfield (Christ Lutheran, Minot, N.D.) shows the high water mark on the outside of the church. Officials have not yet given them clearance to enter the building for further inspection.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This flood has acutely impacted the Lutheran community.\u00a0 Lutherans are the majority religious group in this part of the country.\u00a0 Four ELCA churches have sustained flood damage.\u00a0 First Lutheran in Minot and Peace Lutheran in Burlington have extensive damage in their basements, with yet unassessed damage from humidity on the main floors.\u00a0 Augustana Lutheran and Christ Lutheran in Minot had significant amounts of water in the sanctuary of the buildings.\u00a0 We were not yet able to enter these churches to assess the extent of the damage, but it will certainly be heart breaking.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve spent a lot of time this week with Bishop Mark Narum of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wndsynod.org\" target=\"_blank\">Western North Dakota Synod<\/a>.\u00a0 Bishop Narum has been in Minot nearly every day of this crisis, ministering to the affected communities and supporting the clergy here.\u00a0 Bishop Narum estimates that the combined damage to ELCA churches in this area will be well over $1 million.\u00a0 With hundreds of members&#8217; homes flooded, along with the churches, rebuilding will be a long and difficult journey.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Narum gathered many of the pastors and other leaders at Bethany Lutheran Church on Wednesday morning for fellowship and mutual support.\u00a0 At least 10 ELCA pastors\u2019 homes are flooded, along with the rest of their community.\u00a0 We spoke as a group about the long-term plans to coordinate volunteers and restore homes, churches and lives.\u00a0 No one here doubts that this will all come to pass, but for now, there is deep pain.<\/p>\n<p>We need to rest for this moment in the experience of all that has been lost.\u00a0 I met Gary Johnson, the council president of Augustana Lutheran.\u00a0 Mr. Johnson shared with me that his grandfather was a founding member of Augustana.\u00a0 Gary\u2019s three children and a grandchild were all baptized at Augustana.\u00a0 Generations of worship and prayer hallow a place like Augustana, and it is deeply painful knowing that it sits, for now, cut off and surrounded in a watery place.<\/p>\n<p>I fellowshipped with Pastor John Streccius and Pastor Nathan Mugaas, both of Zion Lutheran Church in Minot.\u00a0 It was a reunion of sorts, as years ago, during my first call after seminary, I used to attend sermon text study at a church in Hoople, North Dakota where Pastor Streccius was serving at the time.\u00a0 Both Pastors Streccius and Mugaas have flooded homes at this time, and they and their families are staying at members\u2019 homes.\u00a0 John and Nathan are sustaining pastoral ministry among the people of Zion Lutheran Church, with about a hundred members with flooded homes, even as they also deal with their own losses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_712\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2011\/07\/augustana_minot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-712\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-712\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2011\/07\/augustana_minot-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/disasterresponse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2011\/07\/augustana_minot-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/disasterresponse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2011\/07\/augustana_minot.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Augustana Lutheran Church (Minot, N.D.), as seen from a nearby property, completely surrounded by flood waters.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the midst of so much ambiguity and loss, signs of hope and progress are emerging.\u00a0 Local planning of volunteer efforts here is underway with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lssnd.org\" target=\"_blank\">Lutheran Social Services<\/a> and other local organizations.\u00a0 Training for homeowners is being offered this week on how to safely enter and clean up a flood-affected property.\u00a0 Yesterday, Mayor Zimbelman informed us that he wants\u00a0 Lutheran Disaster Response to oversee the volunteer efforts for clean-up in Minot, and he announced the same publicly in a press conference later in the day.\u00a0 It\u2019s a daunting task, but many organizations together will cooperate to serve here.<\/p>\n<p>I was very appreciative this week for Sherie Heine and her mother, Pat.\u00a0 Sherie is vice president of the Western North Dakota synod council.\u00a0 The Heines hosted me at their home in Minot, since every motel room in town is currently occupied by evacuees from the flood zone.\u00a0 Sherie is leading an important initiative for the synod to raise funds to assist the flooded churches.<\/p>\n<p>Please pray with me for the people and pastors of Minot and Burlington impacted by these terrible losses, and for the many others in North Dakota and elsewhere affected by floods this spring and summer.\u00a0 They will need the whole church to help them recover.\u00a0 They will need sustained prayer.\u00a0 They will need volunteers, when the time is right, to help clean up and rebuild.\u00a0 And they will need <a href=\"https:\/\/community.elca.org\/netcommunity\/page.aspx?pid=635\" target=\"_blank\">financial support<\/a> to help restore the damaged congregations, as they plan and hope for a new future of ministry here in the Souris River Valley.<\/p>\n<p>In service,<\/p>\n<p>Rev.
