Caring for the Caretakers<\/h3>\n

For decades, the Middle East has been a region of tumult.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ivil war<\/span>s<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>political instability, and<\/span>\u00a0an<\/span>\u00a0increased<\/span>\u00a0number of refugees and displaced peoples<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have impacted millions<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In countries like Egypt, Iraq,\u00a0<\/span>Lebanon, and Syria,\u00a0the majority of\u00a0the population has been affected by\u00a0some kind of strife.\u00a0<\/span>The collective trauma of the region was a sign to the Middle East Council of Churches<\/span>\u00a0(MECC)<\/span>, an ecumenical partner of the ELCA,<\/span>\u00a0that there was a need for help.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaders in the MECC\u00a0<\/span>saw how\u00a0<\/span>the turmoil in the<\/span>\u00a0Middle East negatively affected the<\/span>\u00a0emotional<\/span>\u00a0wellbeing\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0people\u00a0<\/span>across the region<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In 2018<\/span>, t<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Theological and Ecumenical Department of the MECC\u00a0<\/span>began a Trauma Healing and Spiritual Counseling program to address the mental health issues<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in communities throughout\u00a0<\/span>multiple countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A few months after the program began, Lutheran Disaster Response began supporting its development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, healing as a community begins\u00a0<\/span>with individuals<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>As o<\/span>ne of the participants\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>tated<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>We need to be healed at a personal level. Without the [program] I would have\u00a0<\/span>run<\/span>\u00a0away from the problem.\u201d<\/span>\u202f<\/span>To address personal\u00a0<\/span>emotional\u00a0<\/span>and spiritual\u00a0<\/span>health, the progra<\/span>m had three main<\/span>\u00a0objectives<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>provide<\/span>\u00a0psychological, moral, and spiritual healing to\u00a0<\/span>participants<\/span>, provide training\u00a0<\/span>to identify strategies and coping\u00a0<\/span>mechanisms<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to respond to trauma, and build a network among ministers and laypeople from different contexts<\/span>\u00a0to share<\/span>\u00a0their<\/span>\u00a0experiences<\/span>\u00a0with each other<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Because clergy are often in the position of counseling and supporting those who have experienced\u00a0<\/span>trauma yet<\/span>\u00a0have no one to turn to in dealing with their own mental health,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>developing techniques to manage their personal\u00a0<\/span>trauma was an important first step in\u00a0<\/span>helping entire faith communities heal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Addressing Trauma<\/h3>\n

Since<\/span>\u00a02018,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>ongoing\u00a0<\/span>Trauma Healing and Spiritual Counseling program<\/span>\u00a0has\u00a0<\/span>held multiple workshops throughout the Middle East,\u00a0<\/span>originally targeting ordained ministers and later expanding to include laypeople<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>As\u00a0<\/span>faith\u00a0<\/span>leaders,\u00a0<\/span>they were able to\u00a0<\/span>develop their mindsets<\/span>\u00a0to better serve their communities.<\/span>\u00a0When asked about the workshop,\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>faith leader\u00a0<\/span>said it was\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>new experience<\/span>, as<\/span>\u00a0if I was in a spiritual exercise. I felt that it\u00a0<\/span>wa<\/span>s important to build myself for the sake of my internal peace. I learned how to transfer the information to the others and how to\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>ake decisions without hesitation.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Workshop<\/span>s last five to six days and ha<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>group\u00a0<\/span>sessions\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>include<\/span>\u00a0an Introduction to Stress Symptoms and Traumas,<\/span>\u00a0Emotional Maturity, Emotional Support<\/span>, Spiritual Accompaniment, Art and Music Therapy, and Physical Activity.\u00a0<\/span>Later iterations included one-on-one<\/span>\u00a0sessions to work through personal anxieties.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T\"\"<\/a>he\u00a0<\/span>array of\u00a0<\/span>sessions took\u00a0<\/span>varied<\/span>\u00a0approaches to\u00a0<\/span>address different aspects of trauma, how to work through them and how to build resilience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI started to better hear what is going on inside me, to think of\u00a0<\/span>others,<\/span>\u00a0especially my children. I started to feel my ability to confront. I learned to absorb anger,\u201d said one participant. \u201cThe sessions \u2013 the personal and group session<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 helped to empty myself and to listen well.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During post-workshop evaluations, many participants voiced similar reactions. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive as\u00a0<\/span>faith leaders<\/span>\u00a0expressed a new understanding of the trauma they\u00a0<\/span>experienced<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>how to navigate it<\/span>: \u201c<\/span>I learned not to exert too much on oneself and to elevate my self-esteem. I learned to take the initiative towards others, but with continuous self-care,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>expressed<\/span> another participant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only does this\u00a0<\/span>counseling\u00a0<\/span>program support faith leaders that have<\/span>\u00a0experienced trauma, but it also gives\u00a0<\/span>them<\/span>\u00a0the skills they need to<\/span>\u00a0go back\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>assist<\/span>\u00a0their communities<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Participants were invited to follow-up Training of Trainers workshops<\/span>\u00a0to help them engage<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with those who might come to them for\u00a0<\/span>guidance<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>According to Father Gaby<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Hachem<\/span>, director of the\u00a0<\/span>Theological and Ecumenical Department,\u00a0<\/span>many groups are still in contact with one another and have participated in follow-up virtual programs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adapting to New Challenges<\/h3>\n

With each new workshop, the program evolved. Participants expanded beyond rostered ministers to nuns and laypeople. The first workshops were in Iraq and later ones were in Syria and Egypt. Then, COVID<\/span>-19 hit, and travel and in-person gatherings were out of the question.\u00a0<\/span>While new workshops were postponed,\u00a0<\/span>the team continued online follow-up with past participants.\u00a0<\/span>The previously planned sessions will continue once travel is viable again<\/span>, says\u00a0<\/span>Hachem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the midst of\u00a0the pandemic,\u00a0<\/span>tragedy struck again in Lebanon<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>On August 4<\/span>th<\/span>, a set of explosions in the port of Beirut damaged the city for miles and killed\u00a0<\/span>190\u00a0<\/span>people.\u00a0<\/span>It shook the city to the core. \u201cThe Trauma Healing and Spiritual Counseling<\/span>\u00a0team could not but think of all these people and what could be done to help them,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Hachem<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said a<\/span>fter<\/span>\u00a0the explosion. \u201cMany MECC contacts who know about the program are calling for the demand to help in this aspect.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A new program is being developed by the team, targeting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>youth\u00a0<\/span>in Beirut.\u00a0<\/span>The goals of these\u00a0<\/span>workshops<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0to help\u00a0<\/span>participants understand\u00a0<\/span>the disaster and accepting the resulting trauma<\/span>\u00a0and the impacts of losing loved ones and property<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0A group of psychotherapists, pastors, and nuns<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have already been recruited to\u00a0<\/span>guide and support participants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Additionally,\u00a0<\/span>the youth\u00a0<\/span>will receive training on how to accompany\u00a0<\/span>their peers<\/span>\u00a0on their healing journeys.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As turbulence continues in the Middle East, the<\/span>\u00a0transformative<\/span> value\u00a0<\/span>of th<\/span>e Trauma Healing and Spiritual Counseling<\/span>\u00a0program is clear.\u00a0<\/span>As one participant stated, \u201cBefore the workshop, I was nervous<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0I used to shout without listening. The workshop gave me a balance within myself. The emptiness\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span> the worries inside me were removed. After the workshop I discovered that I\u00a0<\/span>could<\/span>\u00a0help<\/span>\u00a0[others]<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As participants face their trauma<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>start to understand\u00a0<\/span>their emotions<\/span>, they can begin a journey of re<\/span>silience<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The experience allowed participants to reframe\u00a0<\/span>how they thought about daily problems and approach them from a different angle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I gained the audacity, courage and self-trust to speak about what we went through with our friends and people<\/span>,\u201d expressed a participant<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Our participation was meant by God.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>With continuous self-care,\u00a0<\/span>faith leaders will be in a healthier mindset to<\/span>\u00a0continue<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their pastoral roles in\u00a0<\/span>help<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0their communities heal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>By<\/span>\u00a0taking mental health seriously and<\/span>\u00a0building a network of\u00a0<\/span>support throughout the Middle East, the MECC\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>bringing God\u2019s hope and renewal to communities throughout the region.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
