At the end of 2019, there were <\/span>79.5 million displaced people around the world. That\u2019s 1% of the world\u2019s <\/span>population.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

26 million of them are refugees, people who leave their countries of residence due to conflict or persecution. <\/span>45.7 <\/span>million of them are internally displaced people, who, for the same reasons, move to other areas in the country. Refugees are protected under international laws. There\u2019s also <\/span>272 million migrants worldwide.<\/span> M<\/span>igrants <\/span>choose to <\/span>cross borders for many reasons \u2013 <\/span>searching for work or education, escaping hardships as a result of natural disasters, <\/span>reuniting with family \u2013 <\/span>and a<\/span>re protected under domestic laws, but not international law. <\/span>Lutheran Disaster Response <\/span>is dedicated to support<\/span>ing<\/span> displaced people<\/span> \u2013 and so can you! Here are a few ways to support refugees<\/span> and migrants<\/span> in your daily life:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. Worship with refugee and migrant communities\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There are ELCA congregations around the country with ministries that support refugees <\/span>and migrants <\/span>from around the world. <\/span>The ELCA is a <\/span>sanctuary denomination<\/span><\/a>, meaning <\/span>that our faith calls us to walk alongside <\/span>refugees and immigrants. <\/span>Through the <\/span>AMMPARO<\/span><\/a> strategy and s<\/span>upport of <\/span>Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> the ELCA shows its dedication <\/span>to welcoming <\/span>immigrants and refugees, regardless of country of origin.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Help children gain perspective on refugees\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

By talking about refugees with children, <\/span>you are showing why <\/span>it is <\/span>important to be compassionate and treat others with dignity<\/span>.<\/span> Learning ab<\/span>out refugees<\/span> and immigrants<\/span> from a young age can<\/span> prepare children for when they interact with them throughout their lives. <\/span>Try <\/span>using <\/span>this<\/span> educational<\/span> toolkit<\/span><\/a> from the United Nations <\/span>Refugee Agency<\/span> or find<\/span> age-appropriate<\/span> books<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Support migrant and refugee-owned businesses\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Find refugee-owned businesses<\/span> in your area and support them.<\/span> If there aren\u2019t any in your town, try online<\/span>!<\/span> If you own a business yourself, try to source from refugee or migrant artisans. <\/span>This is especially important during <\/span>the <\/span>COVID-19<\/span> pandemic<\/span>, when <\/span>small businesses of any variety are struggling<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

4. Understand why this issue matters\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As people of God, we are called to love our neighbor and care for those in need. <\/span>The <\/span>ELCA social message<\/span><\/a> on immigration says \u201c<\/span>The presence of newcomers in our church and society heightens our awareness of these realities and of the experience of new immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in the United States. This awareness makes us more appreciative of the gifts our new neighbors bring and of the barriers as well as the opportunities they encounter.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Donate\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Lutheran Disaster Response supports refugees and host communities around the world. <\/span>Donations to the <\/span>South Sudan<\/span><\/a> fund, the <\/span>Middle East and Europe Refugee Crisis<\/span><\/a> fund, and AMMPARO<\/a> will be used in full to support our work <\/span>with refugees and migrants to bring them hope and renewal in a tumultuous time. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
